A7X One Shots

Warmness on the Soul

The sun peeked through the cracks in the blinds, waking me up from a deep sleep. My eyes popped open and met Emma’s face. She was still sleeping softly. A smile crept on my face as I looked at my girlfriend. She was so beautiful w=even while drooling in her sleep.

Slowly, I pushed the blankets back and got out of our bed. Today was going to be a big day. Emma and I had been dating for four years, and I had finally worked up the courage to propose to the hazel-green eyed woman I had fallen in love with.

I turned the shower on and stepped into it, thinking about my girl. Whenever I looked at her, my feelings of doubt were erased. I know I’ll never feel alone with Emma by my side. Lathering soap over my body, I smiled brightly. She was the one, the one for me, and someone I could confide in.

Turning the water off, I grabbed a towel and wrapped it around myself. Over the course of the last four years, we’d seen some ups and downs. I had almost broken up with Emma when I’d lost my sister. But her unconditional love helped me through. She’d been there from the start. Emma’s love has always been true. I couldn’t deny that.

When I got back into the bedroom, Emma was still asleep. Her black hair was tossed over my pillow, drool pooling on her side of the bed. I smiled again and grabbed the ring from my dresser drawer. Bending down, I pressed a kiss to her forehead then went to the kitchen to make her breakfast.

The fridge was plastered with pictures of us, and my smile grew even bigger. We didn’t discriminate on the pictures we put up there. Some pictures were good memories and some pictures were bad memories.

Pulling eggs and mile from the fridge, I looked at all our pictures. One of my favorites was from my sister’s funeral. Emma was in a black dress, her face pressed into my chest. There was snot on my jacket and my own face was red and splotchy from tears. My mom had taken the photo even though it had been a bad day for my family. She said it’d be something that defined our relationship. As always, Mom was right. I’d always remember how Emma stood by me.

I shook my head and cracked some eggs into the frying pan. As the eggs started to cook, I looked at another photo. This one was of Emma in a black cap and gown. She had the biggest smile I’d ever seen on her face and one of her hands had a roll of paper that was thrust in the air. It was her college graduation. It was probably my favorite photo because that was the day we met.

Right after that photo, I’d run into her. Emma had fallen straight on her ass and glared at me. I remember smiling and helping her up. Then, because I was a cocky son of a bitch, I had asked her out. We’d been together ever since.

I flipped the eggs and sprinkled some cheese and spinach into them. Smiling, I plated the omelet and poured a glass of milk for Emma.

The door to the bedroom cracked open and my hazel-eyed beauty entered the kitchen. She shook her head and smiled at the omelet on the counter. She made her way to a stool and basically swallowed the eggs whole.

“Thank you, Eric,” she said around a mouthful of spinach omelet. “Why are you up so early?”

I smirked. “Just had the urge to get up.” I handed her a napkin.

Emma stared at me. She could read me like a book. Pushing her plate away, she narrowed her eyes and examined me carefully. Her head tilted to the side but then she shrugged.

“What are our plans for the day?” She asked, standing up to was her plate.

“Just one thing,” I said.

Before Emma could ask what that was, the doorbell rang. I went to the door and smiled as our parents entered our apartment. Emma squealed and ran to the bedroom to put pants on. Her father smiled at me and patted my back. They were all rooting for me.

My hazel-eyed beauty came back into the room and narrowed her eyes at me again. “Why didn’t you say the parental units were coming?”

“It was a surprise. Just like this is,” I said and got down on one knee.

Emma’s hands went to her mouth and tears filled her eyes.

“Emma Anne Lawson, you are the love of my life. For the last four years, you’ve stood by my side through all the outstanding bullshit in both our lives.

“I gave you my heart. And I’ll continue to give you my heart because nothing in the world can compare to you. Will you marry me, Emma?”

“Yes!” She ran into my arms and kissed me. A smile spread on my face and a warmness entered my soul.
