Cold State Line

Who's the New Guy?

I stared at the blonde man with his arm around Haylee. She had said she wasn't involved with anyone. Had she lied to me? I can't believe I fell for some fan's bullshit again. All she wanted was a steamy night in bed with a rock star so she could tell all her hick friends that she'd fucked one of the biggest names in metal. And like a god damn fool, I feel for it.

"Hi, Clay." I held out a hand for him to shake. "I'm Matt. These are my friends Zach, Jimmy, Brian, and Johnny."

The man tilted his hat at them and pulled Haylee closer to his side. She looked uncomfortable, probably because she hadn't expected to see me again. I can't believe I fell for her whole sob story about being heart broken over a man. Clearly, she wasn't heart broken; she had never broken up in the first place.

"Now don't take this the wrong way, but y'all don't look like you belong round these parts. Who exactly are you, and why do you know my girl?"

Haylee glared at him. "It's none of your damn business, Clay. We ain't together and haven't been for two years. Go get horned by one of them bulls!"

"Yeah! Make sure it gets right round your little bits and pieces, and honey, I do mean little," Anna said with a smirk.

Their southern accents had come out in full force. It was like the very sight of the blonde man sickened them. I guess I had misread Haylee's body language. She didn't seem to care for the guy any more than I did.

"Whoa there little darlings, that ain't a nice thing to say to someone you ain't see in two years," Clay said, "I'm just trying to sweet talk my favorite barrel racers."

"Go sweet talk Brittany. I don't need any more of that damn sweet talk. It's that shit that got me in to this damn mess in the first place." Haylee adjusted her cowboy hat so I could see her eyes. There was a fire in them that I'd never seen a woman posses.

"Listen, darling, you don't tell me what I can and can't do." He took a step toward her and I'd had enough.

I stepped between them, making sure my body was between her and Clay. I wasn't liking the way he was talking to her or the way she had talked to him. "She said to leave her alone, man. So just back off."

He turned to me with a sneer on his face. "You think I'm gonna listen to some tattooed freak with a terrible taste in bands?"

"OI! Talk about our tats all you want, but you don't fucking mess with Metallica. Their tier one level metal gods, you cowboy-talking jackass!" Jimmy stepped toward where I was too. Metallica were his idols; no one fucked around with them.

Clay looked Jimmy up and down. Though Clay was much wider than the lengthy bastard, he did lack height compared to the Rev. The Rev was one tall fucker and his limbs were wild and long. I think Clay quickly realized this.

"We're talking later, darling," he said and headed to the back of the stadium.

"Thank you, guys." Haylee kissed both our cheeks. I could feel myself growing warm. This woman was fucking with my mind. "And thanks for coming to see me again. I really do appreciate it."

I smiled at her, flashing my dimples. She seemed to loved them. "Any time, babe. We can't stay for long, but I wanted to see you one last time. And maybe get your number?" That came out way squeakier and more nervous than I had intended.

Haylee laughed and grabbed my extended iPhone. She quickly typed it in and then called her own number. I smiled at her, grateful she hadn't made fun of me.

"Where are y'all headed to next?"

I looked over at Zacky. He always knew the schedule. I was usually too stoned or coming off a concert high to remember.

Zach looked over at Anna and smiled carefully. He and Gena were on the rocks again. They never were a perfect fit. "We're heading to Denver."

Anna gasped, placing a hand over her mouth. "What are y'all on, the rodeo circuit?"

I laughed at that. "I guess we must be. I take it you guys are heading to Denver next?"

Haylee patted my shoulder and looked at me with those big blue eyes. "Unfortunately, yes. We're just following each other."

"Call me when you're there?"

"We'll see, big boy," she said and then looked at Anna. "We've got to get going, boys."

Nodding, I gently grabbed her hand and placed a small peck against her lips. There was no need to get graphic with the guys and Anna around. Haylee smiled at me as I pulled away. I swear that woman was doing all kinds of things to me. She made me feel like I was whole again, in a way I hadn't felt since we started touring.

"Bye Haylee," I said, waving as Jimmy helped guide me out of the arena. As soon as my brain was functioning again, I would have to thank him and Syn with some sort of good gift. They had not only allowed me to see my girl again, but to get her phone number too. The only problem was our distance and that damn blonde cowboy.
