Cold State Line

Jail

The cell I was sitting in was different than what they showed on TV. It wasn't crazy steel and cold. It was just a room with benches and bars and a lot more people than I expected. Who knew so many women committed crimes?

"So, what are you in here for?" A woman with one eye and tons of tattoos asked me. Who would have thought a stereotypical looking type of prison person would actually be in jail.

"I beat the shit out of my abuser for shooting the man I'm in love with." I looked at the police officer through the bars. He knew why I was here. I had told him to arrest me; none of them really wanted to.

The woman just stared at me for a moment. "Damn, girl. Good for you."

I nodded and kept staring at the police officer. I had no doubt in my mind that they were going to let me go free soon. None of the police officers actually wanted me here. They all knew how awful Clay and his father were. They all knew what Clay had done for me. They also all wanted to fucking cheer me on when I had beat up Clay. I just wanted to know what the fuck had happened to Matt.

"Ron!"

His head snapped up and finally he looked at me. I could see the somewhat smile in his eyes. "What, Haylee?"

"What's up with Matt?"

Ron stood up and walked over to the bar area I was standing at. "He's alive, just got out of surgery. They took Clay to the same hospital. I'm pretty sure if your man sees him, they are going to an all-out war."

"Clay had to go to the hospital?" I asked, cringing at the thought that I had hurt him that badly.

"Yeah, you fucked him up pretty badly... apparently. He's got a few broken bones." He smiled at me. "Literally, none of us want you in here."

I nodded. "I know you guys don't, and that's why I need to be here. I physically assaulted a man... if it had been Clay attacking me, you would have arrested him."

"True," he said and headed back to his desk. "You'll be out of here soon. Clay actually doesn't have a right to press charges. I don't think the judge will hold this against you."

I nodded again. Taking a deep breath, I sat back down. All I wanted was to get out of here as soon as possible so I could make sure Matt was okay. But I would be lying if I said that Clay didn't deserve what I did. If I saw him again, I would undoubtedly kill him,
