Cold State Line

Broken and Beaten

Snap pawed at the ground. He had been acting up all day, and he had been off his normal game. I think he could sense my frustration about having to deal with Clay. So with Snap off his game and me frustrated, Tina was annoyed. We did not look ready, and it was doubtful we would make our Nevada goals.

As the day had worn on, Tina had given up and focused on Anna instead. I couldn't blame her, but it was annoying to basically be told you're shit. And that had left me to delve even further into my brain and analyze every single thing about Clay.

I couldn't stand him. And with Matt here too, I was even more distracted than I would be with just Clay. It was like my brain was on all its female hormones thinking about men when I should be concentrating on Snap getting better.
************************************************************************************************************
I tossed and turned, unable to find a comfortable position and a lot of that had to do with the fact that Clay was right across the hall. I had locked my door in the hopes that it would assuage my mind, but I was wrong. It was just one of those days.

As I grew more and more uneasy, I had the sudden urge to pee. Getting out of bed, I headed to the bathroom. Unfortunately, someone was in the bathroom. I stood outside the door, doing the pee-pee dance.

The door opened and Clay walked out. A malicious smirk crossed his face. I hated that smirk with every fiber of my being. "Hey, darling."

"Clay..."

His eyes flashed and all senses left my head. It was like we were dating again. He looked me up and down and pulled me toward him. "Let's have that talk, darling."

My body was jello as he pulled me into his room. I was frozen all over again. This couldn't happen again. Tears already started to form in my eyes. This was not happening again. Clay shut the door and locked it. Fear and horror wracked me.

"We were so good, darling. Why'd we end?" He trailed a finger down my cheek.

I couldn't answer him. Words were beyond me right now. I could see that night all those months ago when he had become the demon to me, but I couldn't believe I was frozen still. My body wouldn't even retreat from his finger.

"Answer me, darling." He lightly gripped my throat. "Why'd we end?"

"You know why, Clay," I said, finally regaining some senses. "You hurt me, and that is unforgivable."

His eyes narrowed and I saw his tightly wound coil snap. He took a step back from me and his fist hit me in the stomach. All the air in my body left, and I collapsed to the floor trying to catch my breath. Clay pulled me up and backhanded me, cutting open the skin above my eye.

Finally my flight or fight responses kicked in and I kicked him. He released me and I sprinted for the door, unlocking it and rushing down the hallway to Matt's room. Matt made me feel safe, and I trusted him.

I pounded on his door, looking behind me to see if Clay was following me. Finally, the door opened to Matt holding a baseball. Anger drained out of his face as he took in my appearance.

"Haylee?"

I came inside and spaced out as Matt moved around me. It was like I was in an alternate reality. Everything felt fuzzy and weird.

"Haylee, who did this?"

"Clay," I said quietly. It was hard to get out, hard to say it again. I felt like I was talking to the police and the judge again. Why was my life like this? Why couldn't I escape Clay?
