Gunslingers
Chapter 31-- Nerves
Jimmy kicked the drums, actually kicked them. He was frustrated he couldn't figure out the tune running through his head. Granted, the crazy man had so much going through his mind it was no wonder he couldn't figure out this song. Jimbo was even working on the lyrics, usually Matt's area. Although, Jim did give us some great lines every now and then.
"It'll come to you, Rev, just relax." Johnny tapped his fingers against his base. "It's hard work."
"How does Matt do this?" Rev threw his sticks. He was tired and upset. We all had to go back to the sandbox soon.
"I barely do it, Jim. You guys do the hard part." Matt patted the tall man's shoulder. "Just take a break."
He nodded and headed over to Carol. All our girls were watching us work. They said they wanted to before they were shipped out. As the war picked up, the DOD didn't have as many problems sending women to Iraq. It was already lasting longer than any of us predicted.
Carol greeted him and kissed his cheek. They were disgustingly cute, and I knew Jimmy was ready to propose. He had never loved a woman as much as he'd loved her. He'd already bought a ring.
My girl came up to me and pecked my lips. Even this beautiful woman had to go to Iraq. They needed as many doctors and nurses as they could get. She was anxious but ready.
"Is this how all these sessions go?" Laura asked, resting her head on my shoulder.
"No, we're just not ready to go back. Iraq is fucked." I strummed my guitar. Matt was working on a new song and had told me the direction he wanted it to go. I finally had a melody that might work.
"Yeah, it certainly is," Matt said, "I have a song for it. Play that tune again."
The other guys came back over as I played. Zacky and Johnny joined in and Jimbo played a gentle beat to go along with what we had been vibing. I think we were all curious to see what the SEAL had up his sleeve.
"Staring at the carnage, praying that the sun will never rise. Living another day in disguise these feelings can't be right. Lend me your courage to stand up and fight, on tonight. Stand up and fight."
He hummed and we changed the tempo to an insane beat. Matt smiled and continued. Then he got to the chorus and Zack and I joined him.
"Fight for honor, fight for you life. Pray to God that our side is right. You know we won but still we lose until I make it home to you."
We kept jamming, mesmerized by Sanders' lyrics. They were touching and perfectly captured how I was feeling about this entire war. It was incredible how he could do that.
"That's a hell of a song, Matt." Zacky swung his guitar around. "Sounds a lot like Iraq."
"Cause it is. Jim, if you need help with your song let me know. I'm gonna go take care of Rae."
He left and the other guys followed, taking their women with them. That left me and Laura alone in the courtyard. She smiled gently at me as I packed my Scheter away. Laura took a hold of my hand and lead me to her apartment. Nerves radiated off her.
"Baby, what's going on?" I kissed the knuckles on her hand that I had in mine.
Laura sniffed. "I'm scared. I'm truly afraid to go overseas. The news I've seen, the stories I've heard, even Matt's song all terrify me."
"Oh, baby. You know what they tell us before our first tour?" I pulled my girlfriend into my side and started rubbing her shoulders.
"No. What?"
Taking a deep breath, I selected my words carefully. "They say that nerves are good. If you aren't nervous, you're stupid. You have to go in with those nerves. Nerves lead to adrenaline and when the adrenaline starts pumping, all your training kicks in."
"Thank you, Syn." She smiled and kissed me.
