Gunslingers

I strummed my base in time to Jimmy's drumming. He really could play. Not only did he play well, he could fly too. Sighing, I realized how badly I needed to get some since I was thinking weird thoughts about my wingman.

"I'm not insane. I'm not insane!" Matt screamed. And that man had a set of pipes. Shit, I needed a warm body. I was even thinking weirdly about the SEAL.

The guys gathered their stuff and let the courtyard, me slowly trailing after them. It kind of sucked being the fifth member. They were all amazing people, and I was just Brian's co-pilot. That's all I was to other people. I barely rated as a fly boy.

Frustrated, I kicked at a courtyard bush and put my base in its case. I picked up the case and started to leave, watching my feet. That's when I walked right into someone.

"Sorry," I said to the person and looked at them. She was gorgeous. She had hair down to her shoulders and big, brown eyes. "I'm really sorry ma'am."

She smiled, and it was like staring at the moon. "It's okay. I'm Sarah." She held a hand out to me.

I shook. "Johnny. Again, I'm sorry I ran into you."

"Really, it's okay." She smiled again. I really was enjoying that smile.

"Okay, well, have a good day."

She nodded but stayed in front of me. Did she want me to go around her? Was I supposed to ask her out? I didn't really know what to do.

"Um... you want to go get dinner with me?"

Sarah's beautiful smile flashed again and she nodded. I extended my elbow to her. She happily took it, and we walked to the cafeteria. I'd never seen her on base before, and I definitely would have seen her.

We walked into the cafeteria and picked up plates to gather our food. We kind of awkwardly stood in line, piling food onto our plates and smiling at each other. Once all our food was on our plates, we found a table and sat across from each other.

"So, when did you come to the base?" I asked and picked up my fork.

"Yesterday. I'm stationed here until they finish working on our boat. How about you?"

"Well, I'm a co-pilot. This is my home base."

Sarah popped a grape into her mouth, chewing before continuing our conversation. "Co-pilots? So you're a fly boy?"

Groaning, I nodded. I really hated that term. Fighter pilots were no worse than any other military personal. In fact, we weren't even the most cocky. That would be the Air Force boys.

"Yeah, I am. Where do you rank on the Navy totem pole?"

"I'm a chief petty officer." There went that smile again.

Our conversation continued eventually developing into quick and witty banter. We had similar senses of humor, and I loved it. She was like me but far more intelligent. Sarah was a sweetheart, and I already wanted to spend more time with her.

"This was fun, Johnny. We should do it again." She stood up, picking up her plate.

"Agreed," I said and grabbed both my plate and base. "It's been the best dinner I've had in a long time."

"Here, this is my number. Call me some time." Sarah handed me a piece of paper and sauntered out of the cafeteria.

How did I get so lucky to meet a beautiful, smart woman like her?
