Confession of a King

forty one

I stood in the living room, looking around with my bottom lip jutted out. I sighed and walked over, next to the couch, grabbing the large cardboard box and tugging it along the wooden floors. I pulled out the decorations that sat in the box, placing them on the coffee table and scanning the walls deciding where I was going to put each thing. Zacky was leaned up against the far side of the wall, next to the television in the corner. He was balanced on a ladder as he installed the security camera in the room. There was a security camera in every single room in the house that had a feed on an encrypted network that only he and Matt had the password to. We were warned that at any moment, Zacky could turn on the camera and possibly see us having sex, so we now had to share with him when we were going to get intimate, which was weird.

“I come with groceries,” Corey’s voice sounded from the front door and my head turned in his direction. “I believe I got everything on your list.”

“Thank you,” I gave him a smile. “You can just leave them on the kitchen counter and I will put them all away. I really appreciate you going out and doing that.”

Corey smiled back and walked past me, carrying the bags over to the kitchen, “No, you carry on with what you are doing. The least I can do is put the food away.” After putting the bags all on the counter he reached into his pocket, pulling out his wallet and Matt’s credit card, “You can give this back to Shadows.”

I took the card from him and thanked him once again, then started off toward our bedroom. We settled on our home about a week ago, as Matt was able to pull some strings and expedite things. We were now fully moved in other than finishing touches such as home decor and the few rooms that still needed surveillance systems installed. The guys were all very good about being incognito helping us move into the home. We were trying to get away from the Avenged manor without word spreading that we moved elsewhere. I made it to the top of the staircase and turned to the right, walking down the hallway and opening up the doors that led toward our room and Alec’s nursery.

The home was incredible, and I was honestly in shock that it was mine. As much as Matt and I fought throughout the home search process, I was glad he settled on this one. Mainly for the fact that Alec’s nursery was connected to our room through french doors. It was really meant to be a sitting area attached to the master bedroom, but we wouldn’t convert it back to that until Alec was old enough to have an actual bedroom down the hall from ours.

“Hey handsome, Corey came back with your credit card,” I walked to the side of the bed and brushed my hand through Matt’s hair. He stirred lightly in his sleep, his face scrunching up. “I’ll be back in a bit, then,” I laughed and placed the card on the bedside table, then turned on my heel to leave.

“No, stay,” Matt spoke in a low whine. “I feel like I haven’t been able to spend any time with just you.”

I frowned and walked back over to the bed, kicking my slippers off and getting in on my side. I nuzzled myself under the covers and over toward Matt, careful not to put too much pressure on his arm. I slipped my right arm over his torso and gave him a squeeze, pressing my lips to his shoulder. “I’m sorry, sugar. Zacky said he would be done with the system today, so we will have our alone time soon enough.”

“I hate that I haven’t been able to help with anything,” Matt muttered, opening his eyes and taking his left hand, pulling my chin up so our eyes met. I gave him a smile and he returned it with a light one, then tried to sit up. He put too much pressure on his right arm and hissed out in pain, “Fucking christ.”

I pulled myself from him and looked at him with sad eyes as he leaned back down and pinched the bridge of his nose. When someone shot the car up two weeks ago, Matt had a bullet graze his bicep ever-so-slightly. It wasn’t a bad injury, but it was painful and he was missing a nice chunk of skin that would take a while to heal. Of course, he was stubborn and didn’t want to go to the emergency room for it because how would you explain that? So he was flying by the seat of his pants and trying to toughen himself up on the pain.

“Can I get you anything, baby?” I asked while reaching over and rubbing his shoulder. “Water? Something to eat? Pain meds? A blow job?”

He let out a laugh, “A blow job would be nice, but pain meds might be the better answer.”

I smiled, looking at his dimpled grin. I leaned over and kissed his lips lightly, “I’ll be right back.”

Zacky finished installing the security cameras throughout the main level of the house within a couple of hours. Matt had managed to pull himself from our bed and seat himself on the couch in the living room, watching television with a beer in his hand for the majority of the afternoon until everyone got here. I had spent hours in the kitchen preparing dinner for everyone. The guys followed Matt into his office for a work meeting that I wasn’t allowed to be included on while Chelsea sat awkwardly with me in the kitchen. Things were still slightly tense between us after our blow out weeks back. She was sympathetic after the incident with me nearly getting killed and Matt getting injured, but she never apologized to me for being a bitch.

“You look like shit, Chelsea. I mean that in the nicest way possible,” I mumbled to her as I pulled the lasagna out of the oven. “A couple hours in the spa may do you some good.”

She frowned and chugged back the wine in her glass, “Things haven’t been good since you’ve been gone. Brian and I barely talk he’s so wrapped up in all of this. When we do talk it’s him telling me to either get on my knees or to bend over.”

I placed the pan on the table and crossed my arms over my chest, looking at her. Even with all of the makeup on her face, I could see the dark circles under her saddened eyes. My lower lip fell, “He hasn’t hurt you. Has he?”

“Not intentionally. He shoved me once because I was trying to talk to him, but that was really the only time he meant to do that,” she looked toward the ground. “I don’t want to talk about it. Once this whole Behemoth situation is taken care of, I want to break things off with him and just do life by myself.”

I nodded, understanding where she was coming from, “I support whatever decision you want to make. I don’t like you being around him if he’s pushing on you or just using you for sex because he’s all pent up with testosterone.”

“You could always move in here until I take care of Behemoth,” Matt’s voice sounded from the entrance to the kitchen, causing both of Chelsea and I to jump out of our skin. I turned to see him smirking, “I didn’t mean to frighten you.”

“A little warning next time, big guy,” I smiled at him. “How much of that did you hear?”

“Enough for me to want to knock Gates teeth out if I had both arms available,” Matt walked over to me and wrapped his good arm around my waist, pulling me into his side. He rested his chin atop my head, looking at Chelsea, “He can be a very selfish person.”

“Who knew you had a soft side?” Chelsea laughed and grabbed the bottle of wine on the counter, pouring herself another glass. “I actually reached out to my parents about maybe going home for a little while to blow off some steam.”

I pulled myself from Matt’s grip and grabbed the bottle of wine, putting it back in the refrigerator, “Are you sure that’s what you want to do? You really want to go all the way back out there?”

“I think so,” she said softly. “I think it would be best. I’d be safe there, and away from all of this. I don’t want to leave you here, Ivy, but I know Matt will take care of you and Alec.”

“Where do your parents live and have you told Brian?” Matt asked, curiously.

She shook her head, “I wanted to run it by you first since you’re technically in charge. I was also wondering if you would be able to get me a lift to the airport tomorrow morning. They live in Chicago.”

Matt nodded, “Absolutely. You can stay here tonight and we will discuss it with Brian after dinner.”

“Thank you,” Chelsea gave him a small smile.

I walked back over to Matt and put my hand on his back, rubbing it lightly. “Dinner is done if you are ready to eat. I already made you a plate so you can sit down at it. I will go let everyone else know. Chelsea, feel free to start as well.”

I pressed a kiss to Matt’s shoulder and exited the kitchen, starting toward his office where the rest of the guys were still congregated. I knocked on the door and poked my head it, letting them know that dinner was ready and they should come out before it got cold. Everyone took a seat at the table and I sat next to Matt, watching him struggle picking up his fork while his right arm was practically out-of-service. I knew he was frustrated with the whole thing, and I kept reminding him that his arm was getting stronger and that he wasn’t able to do x, y and z yesterday but could today. When he first sustained the injury, it hurt so bad that he couldn’t even move it and I had to physically help him eat because he was far from ambidextrous. Obviously, all of that was done behind closed doors and not in front of the guys.

“Shadows, are you sure you shouldn’t see a doctor?” Zacky asked, eyeing Matt as Matt took another bite of his food. “I know it’s been a couple weeks, but you should get that thing checked out to make sure it really was just a grazing and that there is no nerve damage.”

Matt dropped the fork and glared across the table, venom dripping from his words when he spoke, “I’m perfectly fine, Vengeance. Thank you for your concern.”

Brian cleared his throat, “I agree with Vengeance. We had no heads-up about that last attack, what happens if something else unexpected occurs and you’re only half capable?”

“Nothing else unexpected should be happening, first of fucking all. I made that pretty clear to Christ on the phone not to fuck things up again,” Matt sneered. “Second, you had every chance to talk about this without Ivy in the room. Now shut the fuck up before you worry her sick.”

“Too late,” I muttered and pushed my plate away from me. I glanced up at Matt next to me, then reached down and rested my hand on his thigh. I looked over at Zacky, “You’re going to be watching the house at all times, anyway. If something were to look out-of-place, you should be contacting us immediately and all of you should be responding.”

“You got hit on your way back from Kim and Gary’s,” Zacky huffed. “Do you just not plan on seeing your son until this is over?”

“Sadly, that is the plan,” I pulled my hand from Matt’s thigh and ran my hands through my hair and over my face. “I also need you to do me a favor and drive Chelsea to the airport tomorrow morning. She is going to be staying with her parents and getting away from this disaster before it’s too late.”

I saw Brian glance at Chelsea from across the table, the slightest hint of concern on his clenched-jaw face. I knew deep down he really did have feelings for her, but he couldn’t contain this beast in himself right now. He wasn't safe to be around, and I planned on having a discussion with him about that once she was gone. Chelsea excused herself from the table and placed her plate in the sink. I figured she was probably grabbing her bag and heading to one of the spare bedrooms, not wanting to be dealing with this conversation much longer.

Brian watched her exit the room then looked at me, “That’s for the best.”

“You’re telling me,” I glared at him. “You and I are going to have a nice, long conversation when you snap out of the stick-up-the-ass attitude.”

“Watch it,” Brian glared back at me. “You’re starting to pick up the same attitude.”

“As she should,” Matt spoke from beside me. “Ivy’s role right now is just as important as mine. If she asks the two of you to do something, I expect you to do it with no question. I understand that I am not at my prime right now, so I’m training her to be prepared god forbid something happens.”

Zacky actually smiled and looked at me, then Matt, “When do I get to try her out?”

“A few days. I want her to take you first, unplanned, then Gates,” Matt placed his hand on my shoulder and brushed my hair back. “Unloaded guns only. Knives are fine for threats, but if you cause her to shed blood I’ll damage my arm all the way beating the life out of you. Don’t let her surprise you, she’s got a mean right hook and managed to kick me in the face.”

Brian eyed me as I grinned, showing off my teeth. He didn’t seem amused by the fact that Matt had wanted me to have a place in all of this. I was honestly shocked myself when Matt brought it up to me, but I understood why. He was at a disadvantage right now, and the least I could do is have a way to somewhat protect myself if things got out of his control. The thought of ever having to be in that predicament terrified me, and I knew that the chances of that were slim to none. I now knew of at least every weapon that we had in the house, and where it was kept. I hated having to keep a gun in between the mattress and bed frame on my side every night, but it was a little easier to fall asleep knowing the right technique for shooting to kill, though.

Zacky was grinning like a kid on Christmas as he looked from Matt to me, “Welcome to the family, Ivy.”
