Who Are You?

Gunslinger

.:.:.

I am so screwed and not in the fun way!

The text was sent to Leana as soon as Elise got into her truck. She looked up from her phone and gave a small wave back to Matt who headed off to his own car. Not a minute passed before her phone was buzzing with a notification.

Lee: What did you do this time!

I kinda told Matt I would make him breakfast tomorrow before the movies…

Elise closed out of her messages and pulled up her web browser in hopes of searching for easy recipes. Her eyes flicked over the recipe names and star ratings before scrunching her nose at all the suggestions.

Lee: But you suck at cooking… Unless you make him ramen.

Elise sighed. She was surely doomed.

Lee: Kidding! We’ll get this figured out. Lacey is actually over right now, we’re all going to the store when you get home!

The sound of Matt’s engine revving startled Elise. She glanced into her rear view to see a hand poke out of the red Impala’s window. Matt was waving his hand forward in small circles as if saying, “Come on, any day now”. In return, she rolled her window down and stuck her own hand out. The only difference was she had a single middle finger up. The window was rolled back up when the phone in her lap vibrated again.

Matt: Is that an offer, suggestion, or promise? (;”

Elise rolled her eyes as a smirk crept across her face.

It’s a guarantee that I’ll be shoving it up your ass if you don’t move your car from behind my truck. (;

She, of course, was only joking around and hoped it didn’t come off as rude. Elise started laughing when she heard him cut the engine. A bright flash resonated from inside the dimly lit car behind her. The lights scattered around the parking lot lit its surrounding area yet not well enough for Elise to actually see inside his car. Her eyes quickly looked to her phone; a picture message was incoming.

Matt: I’m totally fine with you being a literal pain in my ass. Well? I’m waiting.

Elise read the message and opened the attachment. Matt was leaned back in his seat with one arm stretched behind his head, the dimples from his grin doing their damage. Lord, was this man charming. Elise took and sent a picture of her own.

Alright, we’re ready.

A snort was blown from her nose as she looked at the picture she had sent. Her lift hand was balled up into a tight fist, her knuckles protruding from beneath her pale skin which tried to show she meant business. A part of her was a little bummed she couldn’t see his reaction but settled for what she read on his text back.

Matt: Fuck no. Dear God, no.

.:.:.

Elise was mentally cheering that luck was on her side. There was a free parking spot close to her building which was almost unheard of. It was late which meant someone must have left to make a beer or food run. Speaking of food…

“You’re hooome!” Leana sang from inside the kitchen as soon as Elise walked through their front door.

“So,” Lacey started as she rushed towards the tired redhead with different cookbooks in hand, “Can you cook an omelet?” Elise stared blankly into Lacey’s hopeful eyes, a defeated “uhh” being the only thing she could answer with. “We’ve got a ton of work to do. Lee, Ellie, let’s head out!”

.:.:.

“What stores are even open this time of night?” Elise questioned as the three women walked to Lacey’s car.

“There’s a couple around here but we’ll go to the closest one.” Leana replied as they piled into the car.

In less than ten minutes the girls were parked and pushing a cart inside the store. It was quiet with very few people inside. Elise was thankful for the lax setting since she knew this was going to be an overwhelming night between retaining as much information as she could and Leana’s…enthusiasm.

The two women took Elise up and down every aisle while Lacey explained which foods might be best to cook for a beginner and why. So far, they all agreed on homemade pancakes, bacon, and to really impress Matt, a fancy omelet. Elise took a deep breath as she examined the ingredients in the cart. She could do this as long as she followed Lacey’s instructions.

“Your total is $37.76, please.” the teenager behind the register smiled.

“Thanks.” Elise returned the smile as she grabbed her receipt. She turned towards the cart and began to push it towards the exit before Lee jumped on the front and demanded she be pushed to the car by “the peasants.” Yeah, she was definitely meant to be with Jimmy.

Leana decided to drive in order to give Lacey a chance to text Elise a detailed list of what to make and how to prepare them. She even linked a couple recipes for pancakes so Elise could pick her favorite. These ladies were a godsend and Elise made a mental note to pay them back somehow. Since it was getting to be too late, Lacey decided to leave once they got back allowing Elise and Leana to get some sleep. Tomorrow was going to come too soon for the redhead’s liking so she washed up and went straight to bed.

The minutes slowly ticked by. Minutes turned to hours and Elise was left staring at her phone at 3:00 in the morning thanks to her bright idea of playing Master Chef. All the recipes and tips in front of her had been read and reread over and over again. In theory, everything was simple. Crack this. Stir that. Flip the other thing. Simple.

Elise groaned and rubbed her closed eyes with her thumb and middle finger. A dull pain was beginning to set in behind her right eye.

“Please, not now.” She groaned as she begged for the migraine to stay at bay. The last thing she needed was to have a hard time focusing while trying not to throw up. As much as she didn’t want to give in, she clicked her phone off and snuggled into her comforter.

Communication is difficult, but I swear sometimes technology makes it ten times harder.

Woo! Go Matt for taking charge! Definitely worth the wait

That's definitely the best way to stop the teasing. I love that Matt was bold enough to cut the bullshit so to speak.
