Who Are You?

M.I.A.

.:.:.

Sunday mornings always seemed brighter to Elise for some reason. She found herself waking up earlier with a higher energy level than any other day of the week. She guessed it was from the happy memories of her mother always having breakfast on the table early in the morning followed by lazily flipping between football and baseball games. Just like that, her good mood was dampening. She missed her parents, her sister, and her old, carefree life. A sigh escaped from her as she threw the covers off. Perhaps some yoga could calm her nerves and bring back her energy.

Halfway through her Dolphin Pose, a knock sounded around the room. Elise smiled and straightened her clothing before opening her door.

“Hey, Chica. Gonna grab a few things at the store for this afternoon. Wanna come along?” The small brunette beamed.

“Sure, let me change and I’ll be right there.” Elise headed for her stack of clothes.

“Nonsense!” Leana grabbed her wrist, “You look fine. Let’s go!”

.:.:.

The two women laughed inside the a nearly empty store, just one of the perks of being up before 9 a.m. on a Sunday. Their cart was quickly filled with pool toys, sunblock and tanner, and snacks. They were soon on their way to check out.

“Hey, they have it!” Leana put on her brakes as she passed the game aisle.

“Rotten Apples?” Elise questioned as she reached for the box on the shelf that Leana was pointing at.

Lee nodded her head, “It’s supposed to be super fun. It’s kind of like Cards Against Humanity but it’s not. We’re gonna play this tonight.” She threw it in the cart before practically running off to the register.

“You excited for today?” Leana asked as she inserted her plastic card into the chip reader.

“Yes and no. It’s just going to be us there, right?” Elise asked with a hint of nervousness.

“For the most part, yes. There might be one or two other people joining later on.” Lee grabbed the receipt, stuffed it into her purse, and headed for the parking lot.

Elise quietly helped load the bags into the trunk of the car, her mind over processing the events to come. The last bag was set inside before the door was slammed down by Leana briefly breaking Elise from her thoughts. The ride home was quiet between the two, Elise didn’t feel like talking over the music. She really didn’t feel like talking under any circumstance even when Lee cursed at another driver or pointed out a silly car decal to her. All she wanted to do was go home and nap.

.:.:.

“She said she would try to come by if her head was feeling better. Poor thing, I know how bad migraines can be.” Leana hung her arms over the pool noodle as she sat crossed legged to float like a genie.

Gena rolled her eyes, “She honestly didn’t seem too excited for this shindig anyway. We could always go drag her out of bed.”

“Gena, don’t be mean.” A sunbathing Lacey scolded the platinum blonde woman wading around in the water.

The men returned to Matt’s house to find the women already settled in. Zacky and Johnny carried the ice chest to the back yard with a snickering Jimmy, Brian, and Matt behind them.

“Whose expense are you laughing at now?” Lacey didn’t even lift her head from the chair when the men came outside.

“Jimmy thought it’d be funny to watch the two shortest guys carry the ice chest,” Brian chuckled, “And he was right.”

“James!” Leana shot towards her boyfriend who ran behind Matt for cover.

“In their defense,” Gena swam to the edge of the pool towards Zacky, “They could have carried everything out here first THEN filled the chest.”

Johnny stretched with hands on his back and an exaggerated painful look on his face, “She has a point.”
The gang began setting up the food prep while Brian lit the grill. They all decided burgers, brats, chips, and a vegetable tray were the easiest and fastest. Leana passed out beers for everyone as Gena joined Lacey in getting a tan.

“Hey, Lee,” Matt turned towards the woman as she handed him a cold can, “Where’s Elise?”

“Oh, she had a migraine earlier. I think she was going to come over after taking a nap and see how she felt.” Leana smiled awkwardly. It was the truth, yes, but Matt felt there was more.

“Lee?” Matt folded his arms and cocked his head to the side.

She shifted her eyes, “Ok, fine.” She mumbled and looked at Matt, “Mind helping me bring some stuff in from the car first?”

The singer nodded and followed Leana out front.

“So, what’s up? Does she really not feel well?” Matt asked once the front door was shut.

“Honestly, she doesn’t but I think she was relieved to have an excuse not to be here.” Lee’s voiced quieted towards the end.

Matt’s face held a bit of hurt mixed with confusion. The petite woman grabbed his wrist and smiled softly when he looked up.

“It’s nothing against you, Hon. To put it simply in guy terms; She’s self-conscious about herself. Especially when I told her a couple other people she’s never met were going to be here. That’s when her anxiety skyrocketed. She wanted to come over. Hell, we even got her to go shopping for a bathing suit.”

Matt’s ears perked up, a single dimple beginning to show.

“You’re such a pig.” Leana chuckled, “Maybe you can convince her to come over. Here’s my key.” She winked before taking it off her key ring.

“I thought you needed help with something?” Matt laughed as he put the metal key into his pocket.

“I do. Bring Elise’s ass back with you!” She giggled before skipping back into Matt’s house.

She’s the female form of Jimmy.

You’ve watched that movie too many times, chick lol Well, from what I can tell you like him and I’m sure he likes you. Any guy would be crazy NOT to like you. I understand if you’re intimidated about being the new person in a group of friends that close but they seem to have accepted you rather quickly. Maybe you should take a chance? Like you said, you don’t plan on staying there forever so what would it hurt to try? If things don’t work out, you can brush it off and look forward to another chapter. (:

The black-haired twin read her sister’s email over and over but couldn’t come up with a reply. Claire was right and Elise was a bit irritated about that fact. Sure, she could initiate a date with Matt but what if he said no? And is this something she even wanted in the long run? She sighed and quickly began typing back;

Shut up. There’s no such things as too much Billy Madison. And yeah, you’re right. I’m not sure if I’m more scared of him saying no or if I’m terrified of things progressing into something. Then again, who am I kidding. I don’t have to courage to initiate anything with anyone. I couldn’t even go to a pool party today I was so nervous of meeting new people. I wasn’t like this when I first met these people! I’m a mess. ):

Elise sighed and buried her face into the pillow.

Why can’t I be normal? She questioned herself.

For starters, you could not lie in bed wearing a bathing suit, emailing your sister, and putting yourself into a depression.

Nobody asked you, brain.

The minutes ticked by before Elise brought herself into a sitting position, one leg hanging off the bed. Her migraine had subdued and she was more than physically able to hang out with everyone. She toyed with the phone in her hand, unsure of what to do. She began to text Leana when the sound of her door flying open caused her to jump.

“What the hell, Matt!” Elise quickly grabbed her pillow and used it like a shield against her body.

Her heart was racing at the man in her doorway.

“Sorry, I was just trying to scare you, I didn’t know you…” Matt motioned towards Elise.

She chuckled when her nerves calmed, “I could have been touching myself to porn in here, Matthew. Gosh.” Elise threw the pillow towards his head before wrapping the blanket around herself.

“Is it bad I was kind of hoping for that?” Matt wiggled his eyebrows and threw the pillow back.

The blanket clad woman stuck her tongue out, “You should have been here an hour ago then.”

Matt scratched his chin and quietly questioned, “Is that why you weren’t at my place with everyone else?”

Elise turned her attention to a stray thread on her blanket and shook her head. Matt walked over and took a seat beside her.

“Hey,” Matt grabbed her hand and gently turned her chin to look at him, “You can talk to me.”

Hoping to ease the tension with something lighthearted, Elise grabbed the backwards hat off Matt’s head and threw it on herself, “It’s a personal problem, Matt. I’m not going to torture you with the details.” Elise tried to smile and turn her head away only to have his grasp tighten.

His eyes looked into hers despite her best efforts to look away. “Fine,” she took a breath and exhaled, “I don’t feel like I look good enough. It’s stupid, I know, but I don’t know your other friends and I feel like it’d be too much for me.”

His chuckle broke the awkwardness of the room as he got up from the bed. “Woman, you’re silly to think that. If we adore you then our other friends will, too. No need to be shy. You’re smokin’ hot.”

Elise’s cheeks began to burn and his staring wasn’t helping.

“Which I have to ask; Why are you wearing a bathing suit in your room?”

“I was trying to convince myself to go. I was actually going to text Lee that I wasn’t coming over when you busted through my door like the damn Kool-Aid Man.” Elise giggled at the forming mind picture.

“Oh, yeah!” Matt laughed at his attempt at an impersonation. “Seriously, we’re going over to my place right now. Everyone is excited for you join.”

“I don’t know…” Elise trailed off.

The muscular singer grabbed her wrist and heaved her up from the bed.

“Ok, I’ve got an idea. Drop the blanket, look me straight in the eye, and tell me what’s wrong with the way you look. And you know I won’t leave until you do. Or, I’ll haul you off to my car and kidnap you if I have to.” He smirked.

She turned her back to Matt and mumbled, “Everything.”

“Not good enough!” Matt touched her shoulder as the green-eyed woman whipped around to face him.
“Fine! My thighs are too thick and my shoulders are too manly! My tits aren’t perky and my ass is a mine-field of stretch marks! I don’t have a washboard stomach! And my confidence is shot thanks to my ex.” Tears began to cloud her vision when Matt engulfed her in a surprise hug.

Elise went to hug back but lost the grip on her covers. His hug tightened to keep her arms in place as he placed a kiss on top her head. Matt felt her breathing calm signaling him to let go. He slid his hands down her arms but kept a grip on her triceps as his eyes traveled over her nervous body.

“I take that hot comment back,” Matt breathed as his eyes continued to fly over her body, “You’re absolutely gorgeous.”

Elise stood less than two feet from Matt but somehow felt incredibly small under his gaze. As much as she wanted to shake her head and disagree, something in her believed him. The tone of his voice was purely genuine as was the look in his eyes. A coy smirk began to form on his face as the blush began to deepen against her lightly freckled skin.

“Believe me, doll. You have nothing to be shy about. So, how about we head over? There’s beer and burgers waiting for us.”

“Ok, you win.” She couldn’t help but smile at his formed dimples.

Matt gave her one last hug to which she returned before he headed outside.

“Wait, Matt?” Elise called out and lightly touched his arm.

The curious man stopped and turned to face her, a responsive noise emitting from his throat.

Being six inches shorter, she looked up at the man and smiled, “I can’t let you leave without this.” Elise stood on her tip-toes with her face just inches away. Now was Matt’s turn to blush. He closed his hazel eyes in anticipation of her next move only to be left confused. Elise had placed his hat back atop his head and quickly kissed his cheek.

“I’ll meet you at the car.” She smiled, her face just as red as his, “Thank you.”

Woo! Go Matt for taking charge! Definitely worth the wait

That's definitely the best way to stop the teasing. I love that Matt was bold enough to cut the bullshit so to speak.
