Who Are You?

God Only Knows

.:.:. @ the get-together

I motioned for Brian to follow me outside for a smoke. I figured now would be a good time to talk instead of a few hours later where we’d be three sheets to the wind. He got up and followed me out to the porch. It was silent for a moment until Brian quietly spoke up.

“She’s never coming back, man.” Brian’s gaze fell hard on the ground.

“You can’t know that, women change their minds all the time. This can’t be the end of you two.” I tried to reassure him but he shook his head.

“It’s funny,” he smirked against his cigarette while fishing around in his pocket, “I scrimped and saved for this little piece of shit that I never even gave to her. I always thought this would keep us together no matter what. I was more worried about being able to afford this than I was about losing her.” His slim fingers toyed around with a solid gold band, a single solitaire diamond glinting in the porch light.

I looked around as he lit my cancer stick, “What happened?”

“She just…didn’t want to come back. We were heading back to the airport when she decided to tell me she wasn’t coming with and that she’d rather stay behind to be with her family. Said it was too hard to come back here and, I don’t know, something about the happiness wouldn’t be genuine.”

I took a long drag and contemplated what to say. What could I say? It wasn’t his fault but I couldn’t tell him that. It wasn’t because of Brian. Hell, it probably wasn’t even Michelle doing it on purpose. I knew first hand your whole world could blow up in your face in an instant with no rhyme or reason.

Brian rubbed his chin in frustration and continued, “Why couldn’t I be enough to make her stay?”

I said the only thing that came to mind. “Maybe she just needs time away.”

Brian seemed to agree. I leaned over the railing as I watched the ashes fall to the ground from up top the second story we were on. Call it a sixth sense, but I could tell he was smirking beside me.

“So, Elise, huh? Quite a lot of curves on that Lombard.” He let out a chuckle as I let the air noisily escape my nose.

“What the fuck?” I chuckled out loud.

“Y’know, that famous street in San Fran that’s all windy and curvy and shit.” His hand swerved in the air as he described it.

I flicked the cigarette butt into a nearby bin and couldn’t help but smile. “Yes, Bri. She’s exactly like a street.” I mocked but I definitely agreed with what he was trying to say.

“She seems pretty cool. How’s everyone taking to her?” Our guitarist asked while throwing his own smoke out.

“Fairly well, actually. It’s like she’s been a part of us all for years. Lee adores her, Lacey is always so motherly, and I think Gena is excited for a partner in crime. As for the guys, they’re guys. Fair warning, though. She’s sweet but has a sarcastic mouth on her.”

“Might have to put that mouth to good use then, eh?” Brian playfully winked and nudged my tensing arm.

Why the hell am I getting defensive?

“I’m kidding. I’ve barely seen you two together but I can tell something is up. Hell, even Helen Keller could tell us she sees something.” Brian joked.

“Brutal, man.” I laughed while reaching for the patio handle. I felt a hand on my shoulder causing me to turn and look at Brian.

“If it’s meant to be but seems too soon, just wait it out. You have every right to be happy again. No one will hold it against you.” Brian offered a smile as we both returned inside.

.:.:.

My body jolted awake as I caught myself drooling all over my arm. I was lucky enough to pass out on Brian and Jimmy’s couch after the party. I didn’t dare open my eyes fully if I hoped to fall back asleep so I laid there wiping my arm on Johnny’s shirt. I had only been asleep for about two hours, or so the dim light on the cable box told me. So far it didn’t seem like a hangover was coming, thank God. I turned over onto my side and tried to go back to sleep. Tried being the key word as I heard a couple voices around the living area. I could tell one was Brian but the other was a bit too soft to make out.

Duh, Matt. That’s your clue.

I was awake now but decided to stay where I was. The two moved closer as I heard the ruffle of plastic bags.

“You’ve been through a lot that most people don’t know about, haven’t you?”
Brian really wore his heart on his sleeve sometimes.

“There’s always someone out there going through worse. It’s no excuse to hate life, give up, or be bitter to the world.”
Her words really hit home with me.

I debated on getting up and joining them but she began to head out. Brian was such a nice guy, and even if he didn’t mean to, females always seemed to flock to him. I was almost afraid of not taking action fast enough with Elise. Still, something inside was holding me back. I heard the door open and close when I decided to grab my phone. I clicked on her name and hovered over the keyboard unsure of what to say. I could crack a joke but that would seem random at this time of night, err morning. I need to apologize for being such an ass to Johnny about her. Then again, I don’t want to do any further damage. Instead, I surfed the web until I decided on a simple text:

Welcome to the family, kid. (;

.:.:. After the beach

The devious duo that was Brian and myself jogged behind the local businesses and took every short cut we knew. I figured Elise wouldn’t even be close to home yet so we had time to hide and wait.

“I gotta quit smoking those fucking things” I panted as I took a black bandanna from my pocket and wiped my forehead.

“She’s for sure going to come this way, right Shads.” A wheezing Brian placed tattooed hands on his knees and doubled over.

It took a few seconds for me to catch my breath before answering while my friend did the same.

“It’s the fastest way on foot. I doubt she’d try to take any short cuts.” I placed the now damp bandanna back into my jeans.

Brian nodded, took one more deep breath before smirking, “You know we’re going to talk about you two, right? And don’t try to play dumb. I literally just saw you two all over each other.”

I was waiting for this conversation. Zacky knew the moment I laid eyes on Elise that I would be instantly drawn to her; he was correct. Even though Zacky and I may have been together since the beginning of Avenged, Brian become a closer friend thanks to our then girlfriends being twins. It felt more comfortable discussing something of this sort with him.

My back plopped against the concrete wall of the alley way we were currently hiding in. “I can’t even form a solid thought on the situation. I like her, yes. She’s a pretty cool chick but I can’t shake the feeling I’d be diving into this too fast. But when I’m with her, it’s like I can’t hold back. I don’t know what to do, man.”

“Just keep getting to know her. It’s not like she’s repulsed by you or anything. It took two to tango on that beach.” Brian grinned causing me to roll my eyes. “Seriously, dude, build a friendship with her. Ask her to the movies or whatnot.”

“My ‘rents are going out of town for Memorial Day weekend. A pool party sounds fun. How about having everyone over?” I suggested.

Brian smacked his hands together once and pointed at me in excitement, “Yes, perfect! It gets you and her together but it won’t be awkward since we’ll all be there. Bonus points! All the girls will be in bikinis.”

I could feel the dimples over take my cheeks at my perverted friend. Yet again, he was right.
“I have been wondering if that woman has any tats.” I chuckled.

“Oh, shit dude, here she comes.” Brian motioned at the reflection in the windows across the street.

We quickly dashed behind a nearby trashcan as Elise was fast approaching. Luckily, she was on the same side of sidewalk as us. Our heads peeked out from behind the metal container as she walked by. I glanced at Brian as he did the same before giving each other a small nod. We guessed she was far enough ahead for us to follow.

“Wait for her to pass the mailbox then we’ll duck behind the corner of that building.” I whispered while pointing at a pawn shop.

Our movements were impressively stealthy up until the last block. Her sixth sense or something was making her paranoid which, honestly, was making this more fun. Brian and I were currently crouched behind a parked car in the street about thirty feet from the crosswalk Elise was waiting at.

I pulled the cloth from my pocket, “Let’s just make a run for it. I’ll grab her then you cover her eyes. Ready?” I remained facing forward while whispering to Bri who replied with a short, “Kay.”

I handed him the bandanna before we sprinted quietly the best we could towards Elise.

She’s gonna kill me for using this nasty thing. Shit, she’s stepping off the curb. I thought.

I couldn’t hesitate or this whole thing would go under. My arms wrapped themselves around her body, pinning her own arms down. I quickly clamped a hand over her mouth as Brian fastened the cloth around her head in a mere second as soon as I removed my hand. I placed my arm around her again as Brian bent down and grabbed her stiff legs. He lifted her onto my shoulders with ease.

“Scream and I’ll drop you faster than a Skrillex beat. Got it?” Brian deepened his voice as he placed his Zippo lighter under her neck.

I tried my best to hold in the audible laughter but my face proved how amused I was. Surprisingly, Elise didn’t move a muscle. I nodded my head upwards, silently telling Brian “watch this.”

“Check her pockets.” I raised my voice to sound as feminine as I could before searching her myself. I must have gotten a little too fresh since Elise decided to kick her leg out to which she barely missed Brian’s head. We chuckled at her attempt as I firmly slapped her over her tight jeans. I felt a slight twitch in my pants after I heard her gasp. Brian pulled her phone from the hip pocket of her jeans as he lowly chuckled at my text on her lock screen.

“Well, sweetie, looks like you won’t be telling this Matt guy anything.” His deep voice was littered with smug darkness.

Brian must have pulled the cloth from her eyes as I landed another swat across her other cheek.

“You guys are fucking dickholes.” Elise said, her voice dripping with relief.

We bantered back and forth as Brian enjoyed the show, mainly because I kept smacking her ass.

“I can do this all night, Elli. Keep it up.” I chuckled at her.

“I’ve no problem ‘keeping it up.’ Though I can’t say I’ve heard the same about you…” She
sounded way too sweet but I couldn’t help but picture her “helping” me keep it up.

I finally put Elise down as we began to properly walk her to her apartment.

I heard Brian mumble something about hookers but all I could think about now was plowing into her. God only knows if that'll happen.

Woo! Go Matt for taking charge! Definitely worth the wait

That's definitely the best way to stop the teasing. I love that Matt was bold enough to cut the bullshit so to speak.
