Anger

I know your heart

Mia was confused on what just happened. Zack came in and the second their eyes met, he had completely put her world upside down. She had no idea what was happening to her, but whatever it was… It caught her completely off guard.

Her breath caught in her throat the minute Zack’s eyes found hers. His eyes were mesmerizing. She frowned, were they even real? They were the deepest kind of green she ever saw. They had a pull on her, there didn’t seem to be a stop. For a second the world around her disappeared and Zack was the only thing in her world.

“I’m… You guys… Shit… I’m sorry for interrupting your night”

His apology brought her back to Izzie’s dining room. Mia studied Zack a little more, while he was stuttering his way through a sentence. He had a sculpted face. Not the way Brian had. Brian had sharper features, but Zack was more round. It gave him a friendly look. It also made him beautiful. The shape of the eyes lining the magical green. His nose, the perfect size for his face. His mouth, his lips, so perfectly…. Plump. Could you say that about a man? That his lips were… plump?!

Mia shook her head and broke the stare she and Zack had going on, but she could feel his eyes still on her. She looked around the table. Matt had a hint of a smirk on his face, as if he knew something the others didn’t. Izzie’s look was kinda worried, but not in panic, more amused.

“Zack? Are you okay?”

Next to her Brian put his napkin on the table and finished his glass of wine in one gulp. After that he stood up and let out a chuckle. He shook his head before he turned to Mia. “I really have to thank you for tonight, you made me realize something important. I just didn’t plan on Zack.” His smile didn’t fully reach his eyes and he seemed a little defeated. But the burning stare she was still feeling was making it hard to focus on anything else. It was powerful, even though she didn’t even see it. She knew it was there.

“Bye guys, we’ll talk later”
With that, Brian left. Still shaking his head as he closed the door behind him.

Zack finally found control over his body again and he suddenly turned around. He stumbled over his feet as he repeated Brian’s action from just now and walked outside.

Izzie looked at Matt with question in her eyes. They had a silent conversation for a minute and then the shoe dropped with her. “Oh..” she whispered “Oh!” she let out more excited.
“Yes, Oh!” Matt said as he kissed her on the head “Not quite as you planned”. He got up, picked up the remainders of their dinner, and walked into the kitchen.

Matt leaving seemed to fire up something in Mia too.

“Don’t ever do that to me again!” she looked at her friend in anger. “I told you I wasn’t ready for a new relationship and you just pushed Brian on me!” Izzie could barely contain the smile, knowing her friend wouldn’t be able to appreciate it. Mia couldn’t help she didn’t realize yet, Izzie thought. Izzie watched Mia collect her purse and jacket. “That wasn’t okay Izzie” the door already in hand she reminded her manners “Thank you for dinner though”.

Mia felt relief when she walked outside and saw Zack standing there. It wasn’t that she was desperate to talk to him, but she did want an explanation from him. He did something with her when he came in, and she needed to know what it was. His bent over forward posture, his heaving for air made her worry a little though.

“Are you okay?”
Zack nodded, and continued the staring. Now she knew he was okay, the anger took over again. Who the hell was he to confuse her that much. She wasn’t ready for him. She had to think about what Brian said… She didn’t plan on Zack and that pissed her off.

“What the fuck just happened between us in there?”

For a second she thought he didn’t hear her and knowing that she even raised her voice at him a little, she found that odd. She clearly didn’t anticipated the thing that came next. If she had, she would have saved the odd.

“I don’t know” He pulled his hand through his hair and stared down shyly, moving from one foot to the other. However, when he looked up next, his eyes were full determination. “But I need to know. You want to go somewhere?”

Everything that Zack had thought previously, was visible in Mia’s eyes now. She clearly thought he had lost his marbles and was downright crazy.
“Going somewhere? With you?” Mia felt the laugh coming up from her belly and when it came out, she had no way of stopping it. Her laughter attack lasted seconds, minutes even and left Mia completely breathless “Are you fucking crazy?”

Mia shook her head and opened her car. She stopped drinking a while ago. Wine was never friendly with her in the mornings. She preferred a beer. She started the engine and wanted to drive off, but was stopped by the green eyes appearing in her rearview mirror. Mia opened her window and put her head out “Move! Or I swear to God, Matt and Izzie will have to clean their driveway”

Zack moved from behind the car, but before she could drive away, he was next to her door. His hand quickly reaching in, grabbing the key.
“I know you felt it too. I know you did! We need to find out what this is” he motioned between them, the key in his hand “Don’t tell me you aren’t in the least a bit curious.”

Mia closed her eyes and sighed. Part of her was curious. Part of her wanted to get to the bottom of this and confirm that what she felt was what she thought it was. But the other part was afraid of what she would find. She was pretty sure she wasn’t ready for that.

“Please. One hour. Just a talk. Please”

When she looked up, she saw Izzie standing in the doorway. “I’m sorry” she mouthed, and then she made a quick move with her head. A universal way of saying ‘go ahead’. For a second Mia wondered if Izzie was apologizing for what had been, or for what was coming, but she knew it was the final push she needed.

“Okay”

The smile that she found on Zack’s face lit the whole neighborhood. What… it lit the whole town. He looked like a little boy on Christmas morning, a little boy in a toy store, candyshop. But when he opened the door and pushed her to the passenger seat there was no little boy there. He was completely and fully man.

“What?! Are you fucking kidding me?” She stared at him in astonishment. He had some guts taking over her car. She was close to calling this whole thing off again.
“Shhh, I know where to go” Zack put his finger to her lips to shut her up. The sudden touch send a shock through her whole body. She then knew she wouldn’t put anything in his way. She would let him take her anywhere he wanted.

Zack didn’t know what came over him when he stopped her. He never thought he would have the balls to do it. But once he did, there was no stopping him. He told her he wanted to find out what this was, but the second he put his finger to her lips, he already knew. He would have to believe all the stories, because there was no going around. He fell in love with her when he laid eyes on her, this must be how love at first sight works. It had to.

He knew exactly where he would take her. When he found the spot, he thought he would use it for his dates. It would be an amazing make out spot, after he wooed his date with the breathtaking view. But somehow he never found anyone he wanted to share this spot with. Not Eva, not anyone before her. Now he came here to think. To draw. It became the one place nobody knew to find him. And now it would be their spot. His and Mia’s.

When he turned onto the cliff he heard a gasp beside him. He notice how she sat up a little more straight, wanting to take in more of the view. He shut down the engine and just sat next to her. Both looking at the view made him feel like they already shared such an important connection. Just because this place was so special to him. Now it would be special to her too. Maybe his and her would become their. He sure hoped so.

“Beautiful isn’t it?” He turned to look at Mia. She was staring ahead and just nodded. Her skin looked so soft, flawless. He could barely contain himself not to touch her. God knows he wanted it. Badly.

“Come on. The view is even more beautiful outside and you’ll never believe how quiet it is”

As if it was the most normal thing in the world he grabbed her hand and pulled her behind him, out of the car. Electricity sizzled between them and Mia shot a shocked look at their connected hands.

What the hell was he doing to her?

Zack pulled her with him until they almost reached the edge. A large tree fell over and laid there. A perfect seat to enjoy the view. Zack pulled off his jacket and put it on the tree for her to sit on. The silence was deafening. Not only around them, but between them too.

Mia wasn’t sure if she liked the silence, but the longer it took, the more comfortable she got. Next to her she felt Zack relax too and when she looked sideways, he had the most content smile on his face.

“I don’t know how I feel about this” Mia let out quietly. The silence was comfortable, but heavy, she felt the need to be completely honest with him.

“I do” he replied and turned towards her “I was angry tonight, but the minute I saw you that anger was gone. It was like there was nothing else in this world except for you. I never believed in this…. This…. Love at first sight. I thought it was a good story, a hallmark quote, a reason to write lovesongs, but nothing more than that. But there you were.” He moved his hand to her face, putting the strand of hair that escaped behind her ear.

Mia wanted to move away from him. He was going too fast, touching her, telling her upfront that he loved her… Love? Falling in love? Within the second? That was just ridiculous! But why couldn’t she make herself move away then? Why was she still sitting here, their legs almost touching, his hand on her face, those eyes piercing into hers. Why couldn’t she move away?

“I’m not ready for this”

“You are. I know your heart Mia, it’s the other half of mine”
Mia couldn’t help but chuckle at his words “Now you’re just being cheesy”
“Better get used to it”

Zack smiled at her reply, knowing that was the moment she let go. He turned towards the view on the town again. “I might know your heart, and you know mine, even though you don’t realize it yet, but maybe we can tell each other something nobody knows?”

“Okay. You start” Mia shot him a playful look, not leaving a doubt that she wasn’t going to go first.

Zack knew what he would tell her immediately. It was really big and he was happy that he finally found someone to talk about it.

“I design all the clothes in my clothing line”
Mia looked at him curiously, remembering something Izzie told her once “But you own the clothing line right? What do people expect you do?”
“People think I just own the company, that I do everything, except for the design. They think I have people for that.”
“That’s weird” she replied, not getting why he would do everything but the design. And even more, why people would believe he didn’t do the design.

“No. It’s not. However, you understand, because you know my heart” he winked at her. Mia felt the blush coming over her cheeks. Being close to him was nothing compared to the way he made her feel with those little actions.

“Your turn”
Mia thought long and hard, not really sure what she would tell him. She didn’t have any big secrets like him. Nothing important. Nothing worth mentioning.

“I write all my boss his reports, and he publishes them under his own name” she finally let out.
Zack looked at her shocked. “That’s horrible. Why don’t you tell anyone?” Mia didn’t really know the answer to that, she just did what was asked. She never was one to cause any trouble.
“You just want someone to find out, right? That when they read it they know that your boss could never have never written it and that they realize it was you. Right?”

She stared at Zack and it hit her. He had put to words what she couldn’t “Yes” she let out on a breath.
“See. I know your heart”

This time, when he looked at her, she couldn’t escape his eyes, so she closed hers. This time, when he moved his hand to her cheek, she leaned into it. She enjoyed the feeling of his calloused fingers on her skin. The way he could make her feel already. She wasn’t saying it yet, but she was thinking the man might have a point.

When she opened her eyes again, Zack had come closer. She knew what was going to happen and she couldn’t wait. She longed to feel those lips on hers. When their mouths met, they both knew that was it. Their fate was sealed, nothing that anyone could do about it.

If one of them would have had the right mind to check a clock, they could have set the date and exact time that they decided to love each other forever.
