Meet You in the Stars

Your face is perfect

“I just wanted to stop by to say goodbye!” The main nurse that had been so helpful to us walked into the room with a huge smile on her face. It was a week after the shooting and Jimmy was being discharged, he was practically bouncing up and down in the wheelchair they insisted he be pushed out of the hospital in.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done for us, Casey,” I said and pulled her into a hug. She’d been like my rock while we were here. She made sure we had everything we needed and even snuck us extra food.

“Remember what your discharge papers say, Jimmy. You have to take it easy for a few weeks, no strenuous activity and that means no drums!” He made a show of grumbling and frowning and I knew I’d have my work cut out for me keeping him away from the drums. I was almost positive he’d rather be in agony the entire time he was playing than to not play at all.

“Let’s get you home babe,” I said and gave Casey a final smile before pushing Jimmy out of the room. Almost every nurse we passed on the way out had a smile for Jimmy and most of them walked over to say goodbye.

“You sure you don’t want me to leave you here? Seems like all of these woman are in love with you,” I teased.

“Of course they’re all in love with me, have you seen me?” He winked at me with a smirk that could rival Syn’s.

We finally made it to the doors and a couple of nurses that had followed us down helped me get him into the car. He was still pretty weak and walking was exhausting for him. The drive to his house didn’t take long and he smiled when we arrived. Matt jumped up from his spot on the front steps when he saw us pull up. He was there to help me get Jimmy into the house.

“It’s good to see you back out in the real world, Jimbo.” Matt embraced him gently and let Jimmy lean against him for support.

“How do you know this is the real world? This could be one of millions of fake dimensions here just to confuse us.”

“Whatever you say, Jimmy, whatever you say.” I tossed Matt the house key and he stepped forward to get the door open.

Jimmy beckoned me closer with a hand gesture and he whispered in my ear, “I know this is the real world because nobody could invent you in their brain. Only nature could make someone like you.”

Matt turned back to help Jimmy up the stairs and I tried not to let him see that I was blushing. I moved to follow them and had barely made it over the threshold when Matt flipped the lights on and suddenly people were screaming “Surprise!” The living room was full of people who had jumped from various hiding places.

I tried to calm my racing heart so people couldn’t see that they had just scared me half to death. The last person who surprised me in this house was Trevor and I didn’t want to think about that anymore. Speaking of Trevor, all of the blood was scrubbed from the carpet leaving no signs of anything ever happening there. I’d have to thank the guys for having that taken care of later.

Brian brought over a chair and Jimmy gratefully smiled and sank down into it. He had a huge smile on his face and it made my heart swell to see him so happy. “Thanks to everyone single one of you that are here. I-” he had to pause to wipe at his eyes which were brimming with tears. “This week has been hard for me and for Avery. The visits and encouragement from all of our friends helped more than you’ll ever know. And now this? You’re all the best friends anyone could ask for.”

There were about twenty pizza boxes stacked on our kitchen table that everyone started digging into. I lost track of how many people came over to talk to Jimmy. They all wanted to know how he was or what being shot felt like. I was worried this would tire him out quickly but if it did he showed no signs of it, instead he kept a smile on his face.

Soon the cake was being cut and the last of the beer was being drank and people started to leave. Two hours after we had arrived home the only people left were Matt and Brian. They helped me clean everything up and soon were on their way as well.

“What do you feel like doing now?” I asked Jimmy. He wasn’t smiling anymore and I could see that he was pain.

“Can we just go up to bed? This day has been really exhausting.”

“Of course.” I helped him up the stairs. He got stripped down into his boxers and climbed under the blankets. I climbed in bed with him, happy to spend some truly alone time with him.

He stared up at the ceiling and I couldn’t help but stare at him, memorizing the outline of his face. “Why are you staring at me? Do I have something on my face?”

“No, your face is perfect.” His lips twisted upward into a smile that made my stomach erupt into butterflies. “I was just thinking about how amazing it is to be here with you. I hate to be super cheesy and talk about one of your songs, but I’ve had Seize the Day stuck in my head all day. I don’t want to waste a second of the time we have together. I want to enjoy every moment no matter how insignificant because one day those small stupid moments will be huge when we look back on them. From the beginning of this, the feelings you’ve stirred up in me have terrified me. After everything with Trevor the thought of opening myself up to someone seemed impossible. Then I met you and it’s effortless. I know I’m rambling but the point I’m trying to get to is that I’m falling in love with you. I don’t want to go one more second without you knowing that because any second could be the last.” I moved so I was hovering over him and kissed him. His hands moved to my face and then his tongue was begging for entrance against my lips. I granted it and then our tongues explored each other in a long, savory kiss that set every one of my nerves on fire.

“Maybe I should get shot all the time,” he murmured.

“Shut up you big goof.” I lay back down beside him and snuggled into his side, everything about this moment felt perfect.
