Meet You in the Stars

“How about you order a pizza while I shower then we’ll chill out and watch movies all day?”

“That sounds amazing,” I said with a smile. Jimmy kissed me quickly then disappeared up the stairs. I grabbed the phone and called in a large pepperoni and large ham and pineapple pizza for delivery and then busied myself with tidying up Jimmy’s kitchen while I waited.

Jimmy’s voice, somehow being louder than the running shower, drifted down the stairs and I smiled as I listened to him sing. His voice was lovely. I could sit and listen to it all day long and be happy. The doorbell ringing snapped me out of my thoughts, wow that pizza got here fast.

“Just a minute!” I called out as I snagged my wallet and unzipped it on my way to the door. I was still looking down trying to fish out some cash so I had no idea who was standing on the doorstep until he spoke.

“Hello Avery.” My stomach turned and I jumped back trying to push the door closed. His foot was in the way and he shoved me backwards. I landed on my ass and he closed the door, locking it behind him.

“You can’t just barge into someone’s house like this! Trevor, you need to leave now!” I did my best to keep my voice as calm and steady as possible, showing fear only gave him more satisfaction.

“Shut up, bitch!” He slapped me across the face, hard. My head snapped to the side and I tasted blood in my mouth. The sound of the shower disappeared and Jimmy’s footsteps could be heard upstairs. What was going to happen when Jimmy realized Trevor was here? I didn’t want him to get hurt.

“Please, Trevor, I’ll do whatever you want. Just don’t hurt Jimmy, please!” Trevor smirked and grabbed my arm to yank me to my feet roughly. He kicked a chair out from under the kitchen table and shoved me down into it.

“You expect me to leave the man that’s fucking my girlfriend unharmed? No way in hell,” he snarled.

“Why are you doing this? I moved halfway across the country just to get away from you! Why did you come looking for me? You could’ve just left me alone!”

“Don’t you get it? You’re mine and you will always be mine. You will never get away from me. You will never be able to run far enough away that I can’t bring you right back to me.”

“I don’t want to be yours! I don’t love you and I know you sure as hell don’t love me. Just let me go, please!”

“You think I don’t love you? Fucking seriously? I gave you a home, gave you everything you wanted, and that’s still not enough to prove my love? You’re just an ungrateful bitch!” He was close now, close enough that I could feel his breath on my face.

Just then the stairs creaked and my breath caught in my throat. What was going to happen when Jimmy stepped into sight? I wanted to squeeze but eyes shut tightly, but no matter how much I willed them to close they remained wide open. I held my breath, waiting for the moment he would come into the kitchen, but he never did.

“Don’t worry my love. He’ll be down soon and we can get your punishment over with.”

“P-punishment?” My lips were quivering, I was seconds away from completely losing it.

“Well yes, just a little punishment to teach you a lesson. He’ll have to be killed anyway so why not make you watch just so you can see what I’m capable of?”

Without thinking, I shot up out of the chair and flung myself at him. It took him by surprise and he toppled over. I straddled his hips and let the punches fly. I knew I wasn’t very strong and I wouldn’t have the upper hand for very long, but maybe it would be long enough for Jimmy to get down here and help me.

Trevor bucked his hips and rolled us over so he had control of me again. I was pleased to see blood dribbling from his nose. “I didn’t want to have to do this, but you’ve forced my hand.” He pulled a package of cable ties from his back pocket and tore it open. He linked two together and tightened them around my wrists. He was just about to slip one over my ankles when Jimmy stepped into my line of sight.

He had a baseball bat clutched tightly in his grip. The look on his face was murderous and the way the knocked over lamp shined on him from behind he looked like an avenging angel come to save my life and cast Trevor into the pits of hell where he belonged.

“Get away from her. Now!” Trevor just smiled and pulled a black handgun from a holster inside the waistband of his jeans. Jimmy froze in place as Trevor pulled me to my feet and pressed the cold barrel of the gun against my head.

“If you take one step towards me, you’ll watch her die.” Jimmy nodded and let the hand brandishing the bat fall to his side. “Now-” We never got to hear what his next order was because at that moment the front door burst inward and two armed police officers stormed inside.

“Put the gun on the fucking ground now!” One of them ordered. For half a second I actually thought Trevor would comply, but then his arm moved and a shot was fired. A second later a second shot rang out.

Trevor stumbled back, clutching his stomach and I almost smiled in relief. My ears were ringing so I couldn’t make out the words that were being screamed, but I knew something was wrong the second I looked at Jimmy. He took in a deep shuddering breath and fell to his knees. One shaky hand reached out for me, but the effort was too much for him and he toppled over into the steadily growing puddle of blood beneath him.
