Dinner for two

Everly’s POV

I spent some more time in Brian’s apartment, maybe I shouldn’t and maybe I also shouldn’t feel that at home here, but I did, and I somehow hoped Brian would change his mind and come back to finish what we started earlier… sadly he didn’t.

I was afraid realizing that all this had just been a dream and it was not real, when it felt so real and so good right now.

I found myself craving to hear Brian’s voice, see his face, feel his hands…. My thoughts were trailing off again…

And then I tried to stop thinking too much about what had happened and how it was feeling like a dream, cause the more I was just thinking about it, the more I would beginning to question it and I didn’t want that, I wanted to take it as it was right now, not overthinking like I normally did.

All I knew was, that Brian was making me feel good. Better than good – the breathless exciting kind of good even.

So after another long shower and me burrowing a shirt from him, I sipped on the coffee that was already waiting for me in the kitchen and then closed everything off and made my way home.

I had a smile on my face the entire day, and I made a good use to it too. I made this a day of my own, enjoying not having to work today and making it a treat myself good day.

Even though I had no money, I decided after leaving Brian’s house, I would go window shopping. I could at least have a look at all the things. I strolled around aimlessly but it still felt good, I had a blast by myself, just doing what I wanted.

I made a quick stop at home and changed into my own clothes, and took a book with me, to sit in the park and read a little. Then I decided to move on when the sun was slowly setting and enjoyed a single glass of wine in a small Bistro down the road, I opened my book again, nursed my glass while having a smile on my face the entire day.

I was sure I was maxed out on content and thoroughly done for the night. But then Brian called, and my heart almost skipped a beat.

“What are you doing?” His smooth voice sounded when I picked up the phone. Unless I imagined it, there was a smile in his voice.

“I had a treat yourself kind of day” I replied trailing my fingers along the fine edge of the glass. “Sounds nice, a shame I couldn’t be part of it” He replied and the smile still seemed to be there.

“How was your day?” I asked, laughing inwardly at how weirdly normal our conversation sounded for once.

“Not bad but a little long considering how it started,” Brian answered. “Girl I had over last night left me in a bad way before sending me off to work. Really could have used a cold shower before going to my meeting, but I was already running late” That low and smooth laugh of his sent a chill up my arms.

“Know anything about that?”

I grinned like an idiot, tousling my hair as I gazed out the window “I may. Sorry by the way.”
“No need to apologize. Just come meet me for dinner.”

I blinked “Oh sure.” I pushed the plate away, surprising myself with how quickly I turned to signal my waiter for the check. “Where should I meet you?”

He told me the address and we hung up afterwards. When I arrived at the hotel with the amazing restaurant I had heard about but never was able to test before. I was getting excited about tasting something new and had to smile.

When I walked in and up to the reception the young woman behind the counter smiled at me in greeting “Mr. Haner is waiting for you upstairs, miss.” Just when I was about to turn around and find my way, a gentleman was motioning me forward and I almost rolled my eyes at how ridiculous this felt and why Brian would go to such trouble for us having dinner together.

When I arrived upstairs, and with upstairs I mean on the freaking rooftop upstairs with just one table for the both of us. I saw Brian sitting there at the table, his phone rested on the table beside his plate, his elbows on the table, while he looked into the distance with a faraway look on his face.

I mustered him for a moment longer and smiled to myself, he looked pretty damn good, and I had only seen him last this morning, but realized again, just how I missed seeing him all day.

“Hey” When his greeting finally came, it was with a glimmer in his eyes and an easy smile on his lips. “Hi” I breathed, watching him rise to his feet and come over to me. He guided me with his hand on the small on my back over to the table.

His glass of red wine was reaching its end so after pouring mine, he refilled his own and laughed. “Don’t worry, you don’t need to drink or finish it if you don’t want to. Just seemed rude if I was sitting and drinking hear lonesome.”

“Ah, so you are actually concerned with seeming rude now?” I teased but quickly added “I’m joking. You more than cleared up everything last night… and this morning” I blushed a little at the mentioning.

He smirked and instead of coming up with a smart remark he just looked at me and said “I’m glad I could see you tonight”

My heart skipped a beat and I smiled “Me too… and I…” I stopped, thinking twice if I wanted to reveal that much “I thought about you a decent amount of times today.” Giving Brian this information gave him might about me.

“I doubt it was anything compared to the amount of times I thought of you… The guys were already calling me on my absence more than ever” Brian smirked when he looked at me.

“Really?” I asked wetting my lips, I leaned a little more forward and to his warmth. “Really” He grinned and that moment took the waiter to reappear putting the plates with foods in front of us.

Brian and I ate in mostly in silence, but it wasn’t anything uncomfortable. When the waiter took our plates away, we came to talk about my work and how I started at the hotel, of how I hadn’t been going to college, and what I did before Chris appeared in my life and he knew everything from then on as it seemed.

Brian seemed really interested in my life and the way I grew up, I would ask in return about his childhood and growing up with the great Brian Haner Sr. as a dad and comedian and Brian chuckled looking rather disturbed. I never met his father, but from stories and social media he sounded like a great guy, just like his son.

When we talked about Brian and the band, it quickly came to Chris as well. It wasn’t completely in a bad way, we did have some good times, and Brian was still his friend, or well… used to be.

Brian’s POV
I looked down onto Eve, we were now sitting beside each other on a comfortable lying chair. We both had another glass of wine in hand and it felt so familiar, just so right…

We had been talking for hours, and the restaurant had closed already, but I knew the owner and he gave me the green lights on staying as long as I wanted, sometimes it was just a great deal in being famous.

“You are a better person than he is” I said to continue our talk about Chris. It was the truth. Sure, Chris had been my friend, maybe was still, I wasn’t too sure… He just sometimes had these weird sights on things, that I just couldn’t follow.

I had helped him out time and time again, even when it came to Eve, and he did nothing to repay or to even thank me. I might not have realized it before, thought it was what you did in such a close friendship, hell I would still do anything and everything for Zack, Matt, Johnny or Jimmy… but Chris, that stood on a different page.

“You always deserved better than him,” I murmured “I heard so many people saying how he could be happy having you in his life. “ I was telling the truth, this was what I had been watching since Chris had introduced Eve, I heard jealous voices and I saw the glances. How jealous I had been myself, more and more over the years, watching Eve and Chris together.

Eve looked near tears, that was never my intention, I didn’t want to make her cry, didn’t want to bring up memories that would hurt. When her voice sounded next, my breathe almost stopped, memories also flooding my brain.

“It was all going well… I thought it was… just before the almost break up I told you about.” She said silently.

“I cried my eyes out when he asked for it because we had just moved in together and I was so scared he was going to leave me. And then one night, he texted me and he said ‘I’m sorry I’m weak’.” My heart started beating so fast, and I didn’t want to hear the next words that Eve was about to say, I knew this story, I knew it damn well… but she didn’t know half of it.

“Considering how much Tyler was texting and calling him before our break, I knew he was about to cheat on me with her. So I looked for him everywhere – I burned through four cabs and three trains in two hours just scouting through the entire city to find Chris.” Eve shook her head, she looked absent but I stayed silent.

“Until I realized I wasn’t about to find him and my relationship with him was over. So I called Val and we drank like crazy. I didn’t tell her all… I told her we had a fight, but not to which extend, you are the only one to know the truth now.” She looked up met my eyes with a sad smile and looked back down onto her hands.

“I lost control and I had too much. I wound up passing out on the floor of a public bathroom. I’d wake up only to vomit every once in a while,” She confessed with a pause, “Fuck, I wish I didn’t tell you that” Her cheeks turned a slight pink and made me smile.

She tried to hide her face, but I pulled her hands away “Hey. Don’t” I took her hand in mine, her eyes meeting mine and she sighed. I pulled her onto my lap, her head resting against my shoulder, as I slowly sank down in the chair, lying both of us down, with her on top of me.

“I want to hear. I want to know the things that have happened to you, Eve, so tell me and don’t for a second be ashamed” I felt like she needed to hear this now. Her hands trailed absently on my biceps the line of my tattoos, goosebumps trailing after her touch.

“Okay,” Eve swallowed thickly, and I tried to calm my nerves, tried to show no reaction to her continued story, even though I knew, it would hurt and it would hurt deeply.

“Basically Val couldn’t get me up on her own and the people at the bar were closing up and yelling for her to get me the hell out. And I was half dead from drinking so much, but I remember panicking for her and thinking that if Chris came and to get me and if he somehow didn’t cheat, I’d take him back and we’d start over. Long story short, he came. He came to get me. I heard his voice comforting me when he picked me up and I couldn’t even open my eyes. In the cab, I asked if he still loved me and he said yes. And in the morning, he was sitting at my beside taking care of me.” She closed her eyes for a moment, breathing steady “But within a week, I knew it was a mistake”
