My Sweet Medusa

09: Like April Fool's but the Punchline Never Comes

Parker

Matt slides into the chair next to me. A giant smile is plastered on his stupid face, causing me to groan. It was too early for this shit. I just wanted to get my tutoring done, so I could get this day over with, go home and go to sleep. I hated mornings, I hated them even more since this Period Zero tutoring shit started.

“I hope you have a good reason for smiling,” I tell him. “Especially since you’re late. Again.”

“As a matter of fact,” Matt continues to grin, “I do have a good reason.”

I roll my eyes. “And what’s the reason?”

“I was talking to your boyfriend,” he replies.

“What?” I snap. “Why? When?”

Matt leans back in his chair nonchalant. “Just now. I ran into him in the hall. He said he was here to do some extra credit or a make-up test or something. He also said something else a little more interesting.”

I was really over playing whatever stupid ass game this was. “Okay,” I say, looking back down at my history notes, irritation clear in my voice. “What’s that?”

“He said you were supposed to ask me out on a date,” he replies in an amused tone.

I shoot my head up and back at him. “What?”

Matt is still grinning. It’s the type of grin that made me want to punch him square in the face. “He said you were supposed to ask me and Vanessa out to dinner with you and him. I’m sad you never mentioned it.”

I scoff. “Oh, did he?” I slammed my history book shut. “Thank God you’re not stupid enough to agree to something like that.”

Matt laughs. “I’m not stupid, but I did agree to it.”

“What? Matt!” I exclaim, earning myself a handful of glares from classmates. I lower my voice. “Why the fuck would you do that?”

Matt is still chuckling. “Chill, Medusa. It’ll be fun.”

“Stop fucking call me that,” I hiss. “And what do you mean it’ll be fun? You know Vanessa doesn’t like me.” I lower my voice barely above a whisper, “She knows we slept together. She could tell Austin.”

“Parker, if Vanessa wanted Austin to know, she would have already told him,” Matt tells me but it doesn’t make me feel better about the situation. How dare Matt and Austin make plans concerning me – and Matt did it because of what reason? Because he needed some fucking drama in his life? What a fucking asshole.

The bell rings. “Well, enjoy your date with my boyfriend but I won’t be there,” I tell him, gathering my notebook and history book.

“Oh, don’t be like that. I’ll see you tonight, okay?” Matt calls after me, still amused. I ignored him as I marched out of the room, slinging my bookbag over my shoulders.

By the time I march myself to Austin’s locker, he’s already there, smiling and chatting with Bethany. I stomped up to him and slammed his locker shut.

“Whoa, Parker, what the hell?” Austin shouts.

I scoff. He doesn’t get to be angry with me. “You told Matt I would have dinner with the two of you?”

Austin shrugs. I notice out of my peripheral that Bethany gives me a weird look before walking away. “We talked about a double date a couple of weeks ago, you never asked him so I figured I would. I didn’t think it was a big deal.”

“No, Austin! We didn’t talk about anything – you talked! Did you ever think maybe I didn’t mention anything to him because I didn’t want to go?”

“Parker, what is the big deal? I thought you and Matt were friends.”

“Friends?” I scoff again. “He’s my tutor. That’s it.”

“Okay, but…” Austin starts but the bell rings, interrupting him.

“Stop making plans for me,” I shoot before turning to walk away.

“Babe,” Austin calls, grabbing my book bag before I can even take a step. I reluctantly turn back to him. “I’m sorry, okay?” I don’t answer him. “I’ll see you at lunch.”

I take a deep breath and slowly exhale. “I think I’m just going to go home,” I tell him. “I’m tired and this day is shit.”

“Okay,” he tells me, pressing his lips to my forehead. “I love you.”

“I love you, too,” I tell him before finding the nearest exit.
