Hitman

You think taking someone's life is hard, right?
Not in my case it's not, at least in most situations.
Why?

Because that's my job.

I stepped inside the offices that morning, adjusting my tie and buttoning up my jacket in a last minute attempt to look somewhat smart. I'd lost my black work trousers and the only thing I had that day was a pair of scruffy ripped jeans. It's not like it even mattered though, I kept telling myself as I headed over to my desk. It wasn't even a work day. It was meant to be our day off, but I had my reasons. I loved my job.

I headed over to my desk and plopped down in the black swivel chair, a loud creak breaking the silence around me. There was usually a busy atmosphere around there - Tapping and clicking of keyboards and mice, chatter and bragging about who got the latest kill and the shuffling of feet on the carpeted floor. That day, there was an almost eerie silence though. I allowed a sigh to escape my lips as I switched on the computer in front of me and kicked my feet up onto the desk. A relaxed work day, I called it. Days where no one bothered me, there were no kills to be had (Although I love that part of the job) and I could sit on my ass all day with my feet up, while still doing more than everyone else. My favourite day.

A message popped up on the computer screen once it loaded. I sat upright, placing my feet on the ground and I inspected the text.

"I see you're a work again on your day off, Sanders." - Boss

I chuckled upon reading the message. He'd always be really surprised whenever I came into work when I didn't need to.

Another message then popped up. It read,

"Get your ass into my office. There's something I have to show you." - Boss

I shot upright, accidentally sending the swivel chair flying backwards and made my way to the office that Boss occupied. I pressed the button beside the door, alerting him that I had arrived and he unlocked the door, before welcoming me inside.

"Take a seat, Sanders." He instructed. I sat down in the chair facing his desk and ran a hand through my hair. My glance shifted to the Boss, who had taken his seat behind the desk. He was wearing a black suit with a white, bloodstained shirt and a dark red tie. He wore a pair of aviators similar to mine, but there was no way of seeing through those tinted shades. A man of mystery. Boss.

"So lemme guess, I fucked up the last job?" I chuckled, leaning back in the chair.

"Y'know, you're one of the only people who have the balls to come in here acting all cocky." Boss murmured, leaning forward on the table.

"Yeah well, a hitman doesn't live long. May as well make the most of it, huh?" I shrugged.

"I like you Sanders. You're not scared of anything. Nerves and balls of steel. You get the job done and even do all the paperwork too... Let's run over your file, shall we?" He suggested, raising out of his seat and walking to the large cabinet behind him. He fished a set of keys from his pocket and selected a small, silver key. Inserting it into the lock and twisting it, the cabinet opened and he pulled out the drawer, revealing a whole set of folders. He skimmed over the names of each and plucked out a large, dark grey folder. He then slammed the cabinet shut and tossed the folder onto the table. I leaned over and peered at it. The name 'Sanders, Matthew' had been written on the label in nice, neat handwriting. Boss returned to his seat and spun the folder around so it was facing him and he opened it up.

"Right, let's see here... Matthew Charles Sanders. 35 years of age, born in Cali. No wife, no kids, no pets... Wow, you must hate being at home. Maybe that's why you're here all the time." He said.

"I guess that's partly it. I've got friends who stay with me though." I added.

"Mhm... Two cars, large house... Apparently you're in a band too, huh?" He asked, looking up from the folder to me.

"Avenged Sevenfold. We've been going for quite some time now." I explained. He nodded and looked back down to my file.

"Now let's jet to the juicy stuff... An estimated 250 kills on record since the start of the year, only taken time off work twice for medical reasons, favourite weapon being the knife and you're earning a 6 figure salary... What am I paying you now, 150k? I should be paying you more than that for your work and loyalty..."

"It's not necessary." I interrupted. He glared at me for my rudeness, but excused it.

"Well, I think you're being underpaid here. We wouldn't want you leaving anytime soon now, would we?"

"I'm not leaving." I growled lowly, watching as he closed my file and put it to one side.He smiled and then opened the drawer of his desk, pulling out another file and a knife. Not just any old knife. This was more of a tribal/ceremonial knife with a unique dragon shaped handle and carved blade. He then stabbed the blade violently into the table, narrowly missing my hand by about 2 inches. I jumped back in my seat, almost falling backwards and down to the ground.

"Good. Do you know what this is?" He asked, referring to the knife.

"It's a dragon shaped knife." I answered, my eyes locked onto the handle.

"Correct. Do you know who owns it?"

"You?"

"Bingo" He smiled, tugging the blade out of the wooden desk, "This is my knife. You've only seen it a handful of times, haven't you? It's nice, wouldn't you say?"

"It's amazing, Boss." I nodded. He walked out from behind his desk and stood behind me, his hand on my shoulder and his other hand holding the knife in front of me. It was like holding a bone in front of a dog.

"I know you like it. Do you want it?" He asked. I wanted to reach out and grab the blade, to finally hold it in my hands. I held back but nodded.

"Yes, Boss. I want that fucking knife"

He chuckled and stepped away, taking the knife with him. He then sat back into his seat and opened the second folder. I couldn't read the name on it, but I assumed it was my next target.

"Let's do a deal then. I'll increase your pay to 450k and give you the knife, on the condition you do a little job for me." He proposed, toying with the blade as he flicked though the file.

"This can't be a little job considering how much you're giving me here." I grunted, "What's the job?"

"This." He smiled, spinning the folder around for me to see. There was a photo attached to the file, a face I'd recognise anywhere. A gorgeous smile, stunning crystal blue eyes, golden tanned skin, long, dark brown hair.

Jessica Taylor.
My girlfriend of 2 months.

"No..." I breathed as I read through the file. 28 years of age, born in Florida, lives in Cali close to me...

"No?! What do you fucking mean by 'No'?!" Boss roared, slamming the knife down into the table.

"I mean... I can't do it..."I sighed, staring at the picture.

"Oh, I know why." He grumbled, fishing through his drawer again. He then pulled out some pictures and tossed them to me. I picked them up and looked through them. They were pictures of Jessica and... Me?!

"What the fuck..? Where did you get these?" I asked. I couldn't believe it. He had pictures of me and Jess together, doing things like kissing, hugging, her on my lap, having a few beers... What the actual fuck?!

"You lead me right to her. You tend to forget the tracker in your head, huh?" He smirked, tapping the back of my head with his finger.

"Please... Don't make me do this..." I pleaded, "I'll do anything but this..."

"You want that knife or your head on the antenna of my car?!" He snarled, pushing his face near centimetres from mine. I stared at my reflection in his shades.

"T-The knife, Boss..." I muttered quietly. In all truth, I'd rather have my head stuck on an antenna than kill my girlfriend, but the life of a hitman is short. The way I saw it was that if I kill her, I'd see her soon after anyway. If Boss killed me and she stayed alive, I'd have to wait a long ass time to see her.

"Excellent. Use the knife to do it and you keep it. Understand?" He asked as an evil smile spread across his face.

"Yes Boss..." I nodded. I got up from my seat and took the knife. Boss gave me a sheath for it that clipped onto my belt, so I did just that and off I went, out of the room and the rest of the office building. I pulled my phone out from my pocket and dialled Jessica's number, then placed the phone to my ear.

"Hey baby!" Came her cheerful voice.

"Hey sweetheart, you alright?" I asked

"Oh yeah, I'm fine. When are you coming home?"

"Well, I was hoping you could meet me at the spot? I wanted to... show you something-" I explained, biting my lip nervously.

"You sound a little... Off... Are you okay?" She asked, concern heavy in her voice.

I sighed quietly, "I'm fine babygirl. Just meet me at the spot, okay? I'll see you in a bit."

"Alright... I'll see you soon babe" She replied, before she hung up. I sighed heavily and ran my hands through my hair. I didn't want to do it. I really didn't.... I had no choice.

I headed over to the spot and waited. I'd picked up a few cans of beer on the way over, so I sat and drank those while I waited. After around 20 minutes, I heard footsteps and the sound the rustling in the bushes. My gaze shifted to the source of the noise. It was her. Jessica.

"Hey baby" I said, forcing a smile as I stood up and hugged her. She excitedly hugged back, burying her face into the crook of my neck.

"My Mattie~" She smiled into my neck. Her arms wrapped around my body and I felt myself becoming increasingly nervous that she'd find my concealed knife. Luckily, she missed it.

"My Jessie" I purred softly, trying my best to eradicate any sign of nervousness.

"What did you want to show me, babe?" She asked. Oh fuck.

"Uhm... You have to promise that you'll understand why I have to do this..." I sighed, biting my lip nervously again.

"Wha- What's going on Matt..?"

"I... I'm a hitman... I get paid to kill people. My Boss .. He sent me to kill you or I'll die..." I explained, my voice becoming shaky.

"Mattie please! No!"

"Baby... It'll be okay... I won't live much longer-"

"Why...?" She asked. Her eyes were on the brink of tears.

"Because hitmen never live for more than a few years once they start... I've been doing this for a long time so... I'd see you soon-" I sighed sadly.

"... How are you going to do it..?"

I pulled the knife from my sheath and held it up for her to see. Her eyes widened at the sight of the blade.

"Where'd you get that from..?"

"Boss gave it to me... He said if I went through with the job, he'd let me keep it.." I replied. She looked down.

"P-Promise you'll see me after death...?" She pleaded, looking up at me with big eyes.

"You know I can't promise things like that... But I'll try."

She sighed sadly and looked at the blade again. Her body trembled and her eyes were spilling tears down her gorgeous face..

"Just do it Mattie... Just get it over and done with..."

I nodded slowly and pressed the tip of the blade just beneath her ribcage. Her breathing hitched and her eyes went wide once again.

"Relax baby.." I breathed, my own eyes welling up.

"Please... Make it quick-" She begged. I closed my eyes. I tried. I honestly did. I couldn't manage it though. My hands refused to push the blade through her skin. I dropped it and fell to my knees, tears streaming down my face.

"I-I can't do it... I'm sorry I tried to kill you.." I whimpered quietly.. She looked down at me and crouched beside me, placing her hands on my shoulders.

"Shh... babe... It's okay..." She breathed, trying to reassure me, "Come on... Let's get you home-"

Suddenly, there was a gunshot. My eyes snapped open and I looked around. Boss was standing there, glaring at me from behind his shades.

"I knew you'd fail me... So I did it for you." He simply said, the evil smirk from earlier on returning. I sat there for a moment in shock before I looked at Jess. She was clutching her chest.

"Mattie..." She croaked.

"Jessica!! No!" I cried out loudly, pressing my hands to the bullet wound to try stop the blood.

"Awh look, Mattie's gone soft. Psh, I should've fucking known..." Boss grumbled before kicking me away from Jessica. I groaned in pain as I crashed to the floor. There was another gunshot, but not aimed at me. It came from Boss's gun. He'd shot Jessica again, almost certainly killing her. Then he turned to me.

"Maybe we could bury you two together, then you'd stay together forever" He grunted. The gun was then aimed at my head, "Maybe this'll teach you a lesson or two. After all, a hitman doesn't live long, does he?"

"You sick bastard... I should've never have worked for you!" I cried out.

He pulled the trigger without another word, and the world went black.

When I opened my eyes, I was almost blinded by a bright light. What the fuck...? I ran my hands over my forehead and felt a rough surface that was sore to the touch. I flinched and groaned, then picked myself up and looked around. It was just white everywhere.

"MATTIE!" Came a loud, excited voice.

"Huh...?" I murmured, rubbing my eyes. Suddenly, I was tackled to the floor and rolled onto my back. A beautiful face looked down to mine. Wait a minute-

"Jessica?" I asked in a confused tone. The girl smiled and pressed her lips to mine.

"It's me alright!" She chirped happily. I couldn't believe it.

"No way..."

"Babe, have I ever bullshitted you?" She asked, looking down at me.

"Nope. Not at all" I replied. She smiled and then helped me to my feet then grabbed my hand.

"Now come on. Let's go find some place to stay"

Honestly, I had no idea what happened. Did I die and go to Heaven? Or a very bright Hell? Did I even die? Was I dreaming? I don't know, but I don't care.
