She's a Little Bit Country, He's a Little Bit Rock N' Roll

Friends At the Benefit

Pixie and I were in the locker room trying to gather all of our belongings before we heard the voice of Mr. Smith at the entrance to the locker room.

“Hello, is everyone decent in there?” His elderly voice called out.

“Yes sir!” Pixie replied.

He walked up to us as we tried to finish packing.

“I’m sorry I don’t mean to bother you ladies, but tonight we’re having a benefit here for a children’s hospital that needs help with funding. I would love it if both of you attended. Those who attend get a ‘get out of work free’ pass for their shift tomorrow since the benefit will be running late. I do need bartenders to volunteer. You don’t have to help and work, but if you would like to you will be compensated for the overtime. Regardless if you choose to work or not, there is no uniform required. It’s a black tie event so all we ask is that you look presentable.” He smiled.

“Would we be able to bartend for the start of the benefit while it’s busy at the bar and then go enjoy ourselves as part of the crowd?” Pixie asked.

“Of course! Any help is welcomed no matter how long it’s for. The benefit starts in two hours and these things run well past midnight.” He chuckled.

“You can count on us, Mr. Smith. Pixie and I can bartend to about nine o’clock, and then afterwards we will be a part of the crowd for the benefit and the festivities.” I agree and shook his hand.

I don’t remember the last time I was able to dress up for anything black tie. I did go to an educators benefit back in college, but it wasn’t exactly my idea of a fascinating time.

“This is going to be great! Maybe I can get some handsome young man to buy me some drinks while I bartend to make the time go by quickly. I know exactly what to wear!” Pixie smiled and clapped her hands together, practically skipping out of the locker room with me following behind.

“I’m definitely okay with working another few hours tonight to have the day off tomorrow. I think we both need it after the day we’ve had.” I chuckled.

I wonder if anyone I knew was going to attend tonight. It’s more than likely going to be a bunch of the higher class folks. My parents included.

I don’t speak to my parents often. Ever since I moved out for college, I’ll call them maybe once every couple of weeks to check in. For the most part they’re too busy traveling and enjoying life to bother checking in. They have plenty of money, but I have too much pride to let my parents pay for anything for me. I’m an adult and I can work for everything I have. My pride is the only thing stopping me from having all of my student debt paid off…and believe me it’s a tough pill to swallow.

They raised my stubborn and obnoxious self for eighteen years, though. I don’t blame them for
taking a permanent life vacation after dealing with my adolescent years.

“So what are you going to wear?” Pixie asked lighting a cigarette in my car.

“I’m not sure. I’m thinking about wearing this floor length dress I’ve had for a couple of years. It still has the tag on it. I was supposed to be a bridesmaid in a wedding for one of my cousins but her and her fiancé called off the wedding a week before it was supposed to happen. It’s a deep ruby red color. I think it’s gorgeous and it’ll do.” I shrugged.

“Nice! I’ll be wearing something…black. It’ll match my satanic and evil soul.” She cackled.

Two hours to get ready didn’t seem like it would be nearly enough. I had no idea how I was
going to do my hair or even my makeup. I’m so used to throwing on sweat pants, a t-shirt, and tossing my long mane into a messy bun every time I go out in public. College obviously really got to me.

As soon as we pulled up to the apartment Pixie ran two doors down to grab her dress and
heels before sauntering over to my apartment. Living next to each other was convenient, especially in times like these. We showered quickly one after the other and began the cruel process of getting ready.

“So, do you think lover boy will be there tonight? He has money, he will probably stop by to make a donation.” Pixie smirked while playing with my hair, trying to decide how to do it for me.

She was a genius with makeup and hair. I told her she should have gone into cosmetology instead of teaching.

“If you’re talking about Matt, I’m not sure. Stop calling him lover boy, it’s weird. He’s one hundred percent engaged to the ruling queen of Hell, and I have no chance in Hell of ever having the privilege to call him lover boy.” I chuckled.

“Hey, you never know. If he sees you in that dress, it could be your lucky night.” She laughed.

She was always up to something. Pixie was highly mischievous and always looking for trouble. After the day she had with Valary, she would be the one to put a roofie in Matt’s drink as well as mine and stage some weird set up where it looks like we slept together, all while slipping an anonymous note to Valary letting her know where her fiancé was all night.

On second thought, that isn’t a half bad idea…

It took her about twenty minutes to finish doing my hair. She ended up creating a genius braided up-do, with curled strands of my bangs hanging around my face softly. After she was done with my makeup I felt like a different person. My deep burgundy lips and smokey eyeshadow made me look devious…and I loved it.

We both finished getting ready and took one last look to make sure everything was in place.

“Damn, girl. We just might find us some rich sugar daddies tonight.” Pixie smirked.

We did look damn good for a couple of broke ex-college students.

“Tonight, we are royalty Pix. Don’t let anyone tell you or treat you otherwise. We’re fabulous, and we will control the whole crowd at that bar.” I smiled proudly.

We made our way to the car and headed back to the club. We were about to bartend for two hours in heels, and I had no idea how I was going to swing that. It’s not like I could let the white trash in me come out and kick off my shoes doing the whole job barefoot. That just wouldn’t do…if only.

We got to the club around 6:30, making sure we were a little early so we could get directions on where to go from Mr. Smith and the other volunteers. I walked in and was greeted by Taylor, the boy from the golf course who worked with me today.

“Wow, you girls look beautiful.” He smiled with doe eyes.

“Awe, thanks Taylor. Do you know where we need to go? Pixie and I are bartending.” I smiled hugging him.

“Well there’s three bars open tonight. Michael will be running the main one since he’s the star bartender, me and one of the girls from the kitchen have the one closest to the golf course, and the one by the stage will be yours and Pixie’s. Good luck, tonight. May the odds be ever in your favor.” He chuckled and saluted us before walking away.

Pixie and set up shop behind our small, yet comfortable bar. We stashed our clutches under a hidden shelf by the cash register and quickly poured ourselves a shot of whiskey to get us warmed up for the night.

“Here’s to…life’s unexpected adventures.” Pixie smile raising a toast.

“And to friendship.” I smirked.

We clinked the small shot glasses together and threw them back as quickly as possible to avoid getting caught. We finished setting up earlier than expected and there was still fifteen minutes before the doors opened so we headed onto the golf course for a quick smoke session.

The sun was setting and it was absolutely beautiful. I traveled a lot with my parents growing up, but I always said California sunsets were the best.

“So…is Zacky single?” Pixie smirked.

I rolled my eyes, knowing where this was going.

“Is that why you look like an escort tonight? You’re trying to impress him?” I laughed.

“I mean that’s not a total lie, but I also look like an escort because some rich dude might mistake me for one and pay me a thousand dollars to make out with him.”

“To answer your question I have no idea if he’s single. The guys didn’t really talk about him much. Maybe if they come tonight, Zacky will come with them. If he has a girl on his arm then you have your answer.” I chuckled, inhaling one last bit of nicotine before putting out the cigarette.

We both walked back inside to our clutches and sprayed ourselves with perfume. We enjoyed the nicotine, but not smelling like an ash tray.

It was now seven o’clock sharp, show time.

One by one people started pouring in. The room began to fill with many different voices while people found their reserved seating arrangements. Those of us who came to volunteer have our own table towards the back, which Pixie and I didn’t mind because we enjoy people
watching.

People started swarming to the bar nearest to them, and we were finally in business. One after one we poured every drink and served every type of wine imaginable. Some attendants were even buying full bottles for their tables. Within the first ten to fifteen minutes, we had to have made at least half a grand.

As I was pouring a shot for myself and Pixie that a lovely gentleman paid for, I heard a deep voice that neared in front of me.

I looked up to see a pair of piercing hazel eyes.

“Look at you beautiful girls. You clean up well.” He smiled.

He looked so handsome tonight in his tuxedo. His hair was pushed back and he walked with a different type of confidence than the one he had this afternoon.

“You’re not too bad yourself, Matt.” I smirked.

“What does a man need to do to get a jack and coke?”

“For you? Not a damn thing. Is that all you’ll be drinking tonight? I’ll keep an eye on you and send you one when you’re low.”

“No need, I’d much rather come up here to get it from you and see that beautiful smile.” He grinned.

I think I actually felt my heart stop this time.

“You got it, Mr. Sanders.” I chuckled at his cringe of hearing his name in such a way.

“Matt…please call me Matt.” He shook his head trying to get ‘Mr. Sanders’ out of it.

I shook my head in agreement and finally downed the shot that was bought for us.

“You girls better be careful. It won’t take a lot of shots for small things like you to need a ride home tonight.” He licked his bottom lip, watching me down the liquor with ease.

“Never question a woman’s drinking tolerance, especially an Irish woman.” I chuckled.

“Irish, huh? That explains Pixie’s temper.” He grinned, nodding towards her.

“Yeah, speaking of that, is your wonderful fiancé here with you this evening? I’d like to make
her a special drink…and then pour it on her.” Pixie growled.

We both laughed at her obvious grudge against Val. Technically she only wanted to do what we all wanted to do. She was just actually vocal about it.

“She is actually. I better get back to her before she thinks I died or something.” He sighed.

He raised his glass to me before walking away, looking back to connect his eyes with mine as he disappeared further into the back of the room. It occurred to me that Michael’s bar was the closest to his table, not ours. He specifically walked all the way to our bar.

Maybe it was my lucky night...

If I don't update again tonight, that means I could finally fall asleep. I will definitely update tomorrow as well! How are you liking it so far?

Hey gurl hey! Sorry I haven't been keeping up, I pretty much stopped reading fanfiction for ages. Not because I don't still enjoy it, I just wasn't motivated/in the mood to read. But I caught up on this whole thing today. And I gotta say, even though I read this wayyyy back when you first wrote it, that ending still fucked me up. I'll start reading the re-write of the sequel tomorrow. :)
- Much love, your friend always, Shazz xx

I feel like the build up of the characters was rushed. It was an ok story and all ..... just rushed.
