She's a Little Bit Country, He's a Little Bit Rock N' Roll

The Ice Queen Strikes Again

They have been playing for one whole hour and we are barely on the sixth hole. I could feel the mid-day sun burning my highly sensitive skin to a subtle crisp. Curse my family and our Swedish genes.

Jimmy somehow slipped away from us about fifteen minutes ago, but we figured he just went to get himself another drink.

“He goes in for the lineup…his hands are steady…he has a beautiful shot at making a hole in one here…” Matt whispered creating an intense commentary.

As he brought his club back and went forward for the hit, a loud air horn filled the skies with the highest screeching noise I’ve ever heard in my life. Matt jumped about two feet in the air and threw down his club as he missed his perfect shot.

“God damnit! Fucking Sullivan!” He growled.

I looked over to see Jimmy skipping out of some nearby bushes with a beer in one hand and a small air horn in the other. Brian was on the ground laughing maniacally at the event. I couldn’t help but join him.

Matt was pretty sexy when he was angry.

“Sorry dickbag, but that was payback for last night.” Jimmy smiled proudly, taking a large swig of his beer.

“What happened last night? If you don’t mind me asking.” I chuckled.

“Asshole Matt here decided it would be hilarious to draw a dick going into my mouth with a
sharpie after I passed out drunk. Took me an hour to scrub that shit off of my face this morning. My skin is still a little raw.” Jimmy sighed.

I couldn’t help but choke on my water a little.

“Hey Ivy it looks like you’re baking a little too long out here. Do you want some sunscreen?” Brian asked poking my arms.

“I didn’t know you had any! I would have used up the whole bottle by now.” I laughed.

I took off the sweater around my shoulders along with the polo shirt leaving me in my white tank
top. I didn’t want the tan lines of the polo sleeves on my arms. Brian handed me the bottle and I began applying it to my face, shoulders, arms and legs. I could feel a pair of eyes burning into me as I was bending over trying to finish covering my legs. I stood back up and was met with those hazel eyes.

“Need some help with your back?” Matt smirked.

“Uh…y-yeah…sure.” I smiled, feeling my heart sink deeply into the pit of my stomach.

His rough hands started to smooth the sunscreen across my upper back, making small circles to rub it in. I felt my body relax and my eyes close as he made sure every drop soaked into my already pink skin. I heard him close the bottle and I opened my eyes to meet his once more.

“There you go, you’re all set.” He smiled.

His eyes locked with mine for what felt like hours, although I’m sure it was only a few seconds. Someone cleared their throat as we looked over to see Jimmy putting on sunscreen like war paint on his nose and cheeks.

“If you two are done, I believe we have a round of golf to finish.” He smirked, his lisp emphasizing his last word.

Matt chuckled while rolling his eyes and we all climbed into the cart to head to the next hole.
Everything was going smoothly. Matt was currently in the lead of the game, with Brian not far behind and Jimmy…well…Jimmy needed a miracle but he was still having a blast. I admired his sportsmanship. If I were him, I would have tapped out after the third hole.

I was standing there admiring Matt as he attempted a shot at the next hole. His muscles in his arms tightened and I couldn’t look away before I saw something quickly approaching us out of the corner of my eye. I jumped out of the way just in time to avoid being hit by the golf cart that pulled up next to us.

It was her.

“See what could happen if you don’t pay attention to where you’re going?” Valary scoffed as she scooted out of the golf cart.

I rolled my eyes as the guys looked at each other confused by our interaction.

“Val? I didn’t even know you were coming today.” Matt said confused by her entrance.

He kissed her cheek and I wished so desperately it was my own…in my dreams.

“Of course baby! I told you I had to come up here to get everything planned for the wedding reception. I came for a little favor once I saw you were here playing with the boys. The club said another couple already reserved the ballroom for Halloween, and I was hoping you could work your magic in the owner here and get them bumped off so we can have the hall for Halloween instead.” She bit her lip giving him the most pathetic puppy eyes I’ve ever seen.

You can’t make Satan adorable.

“That’s a little rude isn’t it? Someone already has their dream wedding planned out and they reserved the spot here fair and square. It would be wrong to knock them out just because your fiancé is famous.” I furrowed my brow and crossed my arms together.

“Little known fact caddy girl, I get what I want. I don’t care if it’s been reserved; I’m going to have the wedding of my dreams and no one is going to stop it.” She growled.

“Babe, relax. Ivy is right. We shouldn’t take the date away from someone who already made plans for it. Why don’t we have a Christmas wedding instead? I’ve always wanted one.” He smiled at the idea.

“Ew, no! Can you imagine what the cold weather would do to my skin? I want to look healthy in my wedding photos, not dry and deathly.” She rolled her eyes.

Matt looked like he grew three feet shorter. This woman really has him by the balls.

“Too late.” I mumbled.

Brian and Jimmy heard as their laughter became caught in their throats.

“Excuse me?” Val scoffed. “What the hell did you just say?”

“I said you should wait. You know, for the Christmas wedding. It would be pleasant and cool outside.” I flashed a fake smile.

“How do you two know each other anyway? Am I missing something?” Matt asked.

“This little girl ran into me earlier not paying attention to where she was going. She spilled my water all over my new Prada bag.” She spat.

“It was just water Val, it’ll dry up. It’s not going to ruin the bag.” Matt sighed as she narrowed her eyes toward him.

He turned to me and sighed once more, almost frowning.

“I think you owe my fiancé an apology, Ivy. You’re lucky one of us isn’t going to report you for that.”

My jaw hung open slightly as I bit my lower lip, trying to avoid verbally attacking the both of them. Jimmy and Brian hung their heads and looked at the grass while Val looked more than pleased.

“I’m sorry for the purse. If there are any damages please direct the cost to me. I could always use more debt in my life.”

I made eye contact with Matt more so than Valary. I was somewhat hurt and severely pissed off. I scooted into the seat of our golf cart and waited for them to finish playing the hole as I watched Valary drive off undefeated.

How could he be such an ass? I understand she’s his fiancé, but that whole “happy wife, happy life” bullshit doesn’t slide with me. Everything is 50/50, and this grown woman who is acting like a child needs to understand that. She didn’t even take his ideas into consideration, so why was he here treating a complete stranger like shit for her? I couldn’t wrap my head around it.

We went through a few more holes on the course and I didn’t speak a word to Matt. I wouldn’t even make eye contact with him. Why should I give him the time of day when he disrespected me and let his fiancé do the same?

I watched Brian as he focused on his next shot while Jimmy stood in front of him trying to cause a distraction. The sight was amusing. I felt weight shift next to me in the golf cart seat and looked to my right to see Matt sitting there like someone just kicked his puppy.

“Ivy…I’m sorry…about Val. Also about me. I had no right to act that way.” He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck.

“You didn’t, but you did anyway.” I turned my head and saw a pack of Marlboros peeking out of Brian’s golf club bag. “Hey Brian, do you mind?” I asked gesturing towards the bag.

“Knock yourself out, kid.” He smiled.

I ran over to his bag and pulled a cigarette from the pack, using the lighter that was shoved next to them. At this point, I didn't care if I was on the clock. If I wasn't going to strangle Matt, I needed to calm down. The first inhale of nicotine was always the most relaxing. After giving myself a few seconds to relax I walked back over and sat with Matt, letting the silence make him uncomfortable for just a little bit longer.

“Forgive me for acting like I know anything about your personal life, but why do you let her treat you that way? Your happiness matters too, you know.” I exhaled, making sure not to blow the smoke in his face.

“I really don’t know if my happiness does matter. She’s always come first since we met in the eighth grade. I’ve just always kind of done what she wanted to make her happy. That’s all I cared about was her happiness.” He grabbed my hand and brought the cigarette up to his lips, taking a long drag and exhaling before placing my hand back down.

“Your happiness matters. Just because she feels the need to be an ice queen, doesn’t mean you have to wait on her hand and foot. You deserve to be happy. You work hard and you’re a wonderful person. You shouldn’t have to look at your phone when she calls and find excuses to tell her when you don’t answer afterward. You shouldn’t have to talk down to people just because she expects you to.” I shook my head staring off into the distance.

All of this was coming from past experiences of my own. I’ve dated people who wanted it to be all about them. After I graduated high school I decided my happiness mattered, and since then I’ve lived life my own way. It is still the best decision I’ve ever made for myself.

“You’re right…I just hope things get better. I marry her in a few months and at this point I don’t know if I’m ready. I am hoping I will be by that day…I’m sorry, you don’t actually care about all of this, do you?” He chuckled dryly.

“Knowing you, you’re not going to open up about your feelings around those guys. I know they’re your best friends, but you’re not going to have a sleepover and gossip about your relationship problems. Sometimes it’s nice to get things out to a complete stranger. Someone who can’t judge you for what you tell them. That’s where I come in. I am able to help you decide what you want, so yes, I do care.” I stared into his eyes so he could understand how serious I was.

I wasn’t going to hold a grudge against him just because his fiancé is a manipulative asshole. I’m better than that.

“Thank you, Ivy. It feels weird talking about it, because you’re right again, I don’t. I just keep quiet and deal. I’ll think about what you said, though. I need to start thinking for myself.” He sighed taking another drag from me.

We finished the cigarette and forgot about the whole situation as we watched Brian and Jimmy continue to make fools of themselves.

One more hour left of my first day. I would say it’s been highly eventful.

Hey gurl hey! Sorry I haven't been keeping up, I pretty much stopped reading fanfiction for ages. Not because I don't still enjoy it, I just wasn't motivated/in the mood to read. But I caught up on this whole thing today. And I gotta say, even though I read this wayyyy back when you first wrote it, that ending still fucked me up. I'll start reading the re-write of the sequel tomorrow. :)
- Much love, your friend always, Shazz xx

I feel like the build up of the characters was rushed. It was an ok story and all ..... just rushed.
