Chapter Five

Hannah

I couldn’t believe that the asshole that shot me was only half a block away from me right now but I was in no condition to go over there and make him pay for what he had done to me. As a registered nurse, I knew that Erin was right about me needing to stay put and rest instead of causing myself more damage or possibly killing us both because I couldn’t move fast enough due to my injury – but that didn’t mean that I was happy about letting her walk into something practically unknown. It would be amazing if Erin came back with painkillers and anti-biotic tablets to help fight any infection that I might already have contacted by getting dirt in my wound, but right now I needed alcohol to clear the gun wound and tweezers to remove the bullet.

With a muffled groan of pain, I dragged myself from the spot Erin had left me and I continued to drag myself through the dilapidated house that was once someone’s home until I reached the kitchen and I could use the counter to pull myself up into a slumped-over standing position and raid the cupboards for the things that I needed. Unfortunately, most of the house had been cleared out during the initial breakout and no doubt it had already been looted at some point, but after five minutes of searching I found a quarter bottle of straight vodka in the back of the pantry and some tools beneath the sink that I could use to remove the bastard bullet from my flesh. This really wasn’t ideal and it was going to hurt like a bitch but at least I couldn’t fuck it up because I’d been trained for years and really knew what I was about to do to myself.

I propped myself up against the wall and slowly sat back down on the wooden floor, hands trembling from pain and adrenaline. In the back of my mind I was still worried about Erin, but I couldn’t focus on my worry right now because I needed to fix myself up before I died from a simple gunshot wound – which would totally happen soon enough. I found a small pair of pliers in the tools I’d gathered from underneath the sink and I cleaned it as well as I could with a few drops of vodka and then I tore the leg of my jeans so expose my wound and poured a generous amount of alcohol in and over my wound, biting down on the rag I’d placed in my own mouth to muffle my screams of pure agony so as not to draw unwanted attention to myself and then I immediately started to dig around in my leg to remove the bullet. Once I found it, I grabbed onto it firmly with the pliers and pulled it out in one piece with a relieved sigh as I slumped back against the wall once more, closing my eyes for a moment as the blood once again poured from my thigh, but I could already feel the relief of not having a bullet inside my body. Suddenly, I was finding it very hard to open my eyes and I knew that I was bleeding out but I didn’t have the energy to secure my leather belt back around my thigh to slow the bleeding.

I must have passed out for a minute because the next thing I knew, someone was lifting me off of the ground and it was definitely a male. Probably one of the guys from before and that surely meant that they had E and she was in danger.

“No,” I grunted, trying to push my ‘kidnapper’ off of me, but he was too strong. “Let m’go.”

There was a low, rumbling chuckle from the man before he scooped me up and tossed me over his shoulder effortlessly. “That’s not going to happen, darlin’.” His deep voice drawled. I didn’t recognize this voice from before, but I didn’t get to dwell on it much longer before the stranger deliberately smacked my head against the back door of the house on our way out and he knocked me out cold.

Flashback

Hannah couldn’t save everybody, and she knew that because she had learned it the hard way, but there was a difference between someone dying from a gunshot wound or a car accident and someone dying from a disease that killed them first and then re-animated their bodies to attack the living. This was something out of a horror movie and Hannah was right in the middle of it trying to save lives, like she did best as Erin had said.

While Erin had gone off to try and find her father, Hannah had headed for the children’s ward to where the most vulnerable of patients would be and when she got there, all she could hear were children’s terrified screams amongst the groans of the un-dead. Acting on instinct, she grabbed who she could and got them out of the ward, but the hospital was going into lockdown and before she could get herself and the last remaining child out safely, the ward was locked from the outside and none of the doors would open.

“Let us out!” Hannah screamed as loudly as she could, pounding on the doors frantically hoping that someone would hear her.

“Please! There’s a child still in here, help!”

“Nurse Hannah…” A weak and tired voice spoke up from behind her, drawing Hannah’s attention back to the child in her care, and when she looked at him he was inspecting a large wound on his side just above his hipbone that was bleeding through his pyjamas.

“Darren,” Hannah gasped, moving to his side and kneeling down to his level. “Oh, sweetheart, let me take a look at that.” She insisted, carefully lifting his pyjama shirt to expose the wound and she sighed heavily when she saw the unmistakable shape of a bite mark and the bruising colouring was already spreading across his skin rapidly. “Alright, come with me.” She said softly, standing and taking his hand in her own.

Hannah took Darren back to his bed and drew the curtain around them to make it feel safe and comfortable. She tucked the little boy back into bed and lay with him, holding him in her arms.

“Am I dying?” The innocent six year old asked, terrified out of his mind.

“No,” Hannah lied convincingly. “You’re not going to die, we just have to stay here until the police come to let us out, alright?”

Darren nodded against Hannah’s chest and closed his eyes. He was already running a temperature so high that the heat radiating from him was enough to make Hannah sweat, and his breathing was so shallow that she could barely tell that he was still breathing so she hooked him back up to his heart monitor and held him as his mother would have and listened to his seriously slowed heartbeat.

“I promise you’re going to be just fine, and you’ll see your Mommy soon.”

Third Person

When Hannah eventually came to, she was tied to an old wooden chair with her arms around the back and her wrists secured by thick rope, her ankles tied to the legs of the chair.

“Well, look who’s finally awake.” The voice from before echoed through the room, making Hannah lift her head and look in the strangers direction.

“Who the fuck are you?” Hannah asked weakly, her eyes half shut in exhaustion. “Where the fuck are we?”

“Well, aren’t you a curious kitten?” He hummed, beginning to circle her like a beast stalking his prey. “Why don’t we start with an introduction, huh? I’m Negan, and who might you be?”

Hannah eyed the man just as menacingly as he was eyeing her and she took a moment before answering him.

“I’m the wrong girl to mess with, you dick,”
