Chapter 1 – Johnny’s Bar
Kim’s POV
I didn’t really know why I still felt nervous when I woke up in the afternoon. And yes you heard me, afternoon.
I had a weird day rhythm since I started working here in California. It wasn’t the job I dreamed of, no far from it, but I had fun and I was getting along with my money quiet well.
I knew I wouldn’t be doing this in a long run, but for now I felt good with it. I mean, I was meeting new people all the time and I got free drinks. Not that I would really use them, though. I didn’t like to get drunk and lose control.
But every now and then a little sip wasn’t hurting anyone, that was probably also the reason why my boss liked me that much. I didn’t drink as much alcohol as the other employees.
I chuckled to myself thinking about that.
My alarm started to ring and my heart beat a little faster, god I was still nervous,even after working at the bar for a few weeks now. And I even befriended with the other stuff members so why was I was still this nervous.... I guess something new always took a little longer for me to finally settle in, and this really was something different from me. And I guess my friend knew that I still needed some time because she was picking me up every evening, probably afraid I would back out after she got me the job...
So I had now exactly 1 hour and 20 minutes until someone would ring the doorbell demanding me to get going, but in a lovely yet ordering way.
I couldn’t be mad at her anyway, could I?
She was the one getting me the job in the first place and and she was the first friend I made here, so I did owe her…
I scrambled out of bed even though I would like to just lay here and browse through my phone and look at pictures and websites and just let myself be for a little longer, but I knew that my day would be packed enough even without me being all lazy in the beginning.
I finally pushed myself up and made my way over to the kitchen, I pushed the button to heat the water and decided a tea would be a good start, maybe later I would take a coffee as well, let’s see how much I would need it though and the evening would go.
While the water was heating I picked out the tea brand I liked hung it into my favorite writing and reading cup and then picked out my working attire.
We weren’t really made to wear something too special, just the typical bar clothes. Black pants or skirt and a white shirt or blouse.
Blouse would get you more tips, while it also gave you more guys trying to hit on you, so you had to wager what mood are you in.
I decide on the clothes and went back to the kitchen I poured the water into my cup and made my way over to the bathroom. I took a quick shower, dressed and hurried with my tea and late breakfast, I finally put on some make-up and looked at my watch.
In three, two, one… and the doorbell rang. “KIM?! You ready?” I heard the voice calling from the other side of the door.
I had to grin at that while I opened the door “Can’t you wait till I open the door for you, Mei?”
I shot her a dirty look which made her grin “I know how much I annoy you with it, so let me be” She grinned and looked me up and down “Oh the blouse tonight?” She grinned while she eyed me up and down.
“I thought I try after you keep nagging me about it” I shot back while Mei walked into my apartment.
“It won’t be that bad, Kay and I are there to have an eye on you as well.” She said while gathered my handbag and held it out for me to take.
“You got everything?” She asked while she made her way to the door already. I shook my head, quickly running back to the kitchen grabbing my phone and then joining her at the door again.
“Now, I’m ready” I told her with a smile and we made our way over to her car.
I took the passenger side and she started driving before I was even buckled up. When I looked up again I notived she was driving a different route than normally so I turned to her with a frown.
“Don’t we have to pick Kay up?” I asked and she shook her head “Not today, she said she is gonna be there early, had some restocking to do, I guess late shift last night went a little out of hand, and she wanted to have it back in order before Johnny arrived.” Mei chuckled while I rolled my eyes, sounded exactly like I got to know Kay during the last shifts.
“Will she get in trouble with Johnny?” I asked and frowned, Johnny the owner of the bar was a sweetheart really, and Kay was working there already for quite a while so I hope that she wouldn’t get into any bigger trouble.
“Ahh no. She knows what she is doing, or how to hide it” Mei winked at me from the side “And you should stay the next time to… just saying” She grinned and I rolled my eyes, they always wanted me to stay and party with them way after closing hours, but how they were able to get up and work the next day after that was still a miracle to me, but maybe she was right and I should indeed get out of my normal collected self… or? Should I?!
The rest of the drive went by in silence and when we arrived we went to the back entrance, seeing Kay there smoking. She grinned when we approached her and threw her stump away, putting her heel on it.
“HEYYY, my two favorite ladies!” She came forward hugging first me and then Mei.
“Got everything cleared?” Mei asked her and Kay looked like that was the dumbest question to ask.
“What do you think?” She rolled her eyes and Mei shoved her into the open door.
We headed inside and indeed everything was clean even all the fridges were refilled and glasses were set and ready for the opening.
“Why are we here so early, since Kay did all the work already?” I asked looking around and finding everything neatly clean.
“Well, I thought we gonna start the party early.” Kay went behind the bar while Mei and I took a seat on the bar stool opposite of her.
“What?!” I asked a little confused looking from one to the other. “We know you still feel a little nervous and we want to take that from you, hun.” Mei said while Kay placed a tray with drinks before us and I shook my head.
“No no no, you guys know I don’t drink and especially not when I still have a whole night of work to do.” I shoved the drink that Mei placed before me away from me but she vehemently shook her head.
“You don’t need to drink alone. Come on, Kimmie! I did all the work… Cleaned, prepared, so we have some time for us before the real work starts. I haven’t slept a minute tonight… I went from party to working and stayed here all night…” Kay explained and I looked her up and down “You don’t look like you-”
“I have a set of spare clothes in my closet here and I know some of the neighbours around so I could use their bathroom and that is all beside the point… come on don’t be like that… we don’t want you to get wasted, just play along… PLEASE!” She held the drink before my nose and I sniffed on the clear liquid.
“What is that?” I asked looking a little disgusted at the drink and Mei rolled her eyes “Not talking, drinking, hun!” She pushed the drink in my hand, took one herself and handed one to Kay, they clicked their glasses to mine and downed them and I didn’t really have a choice in arguing against those two, so I obeyed and drank.
The alcohol burned down my throat and I nearly coughed but I saw the lifted eyebrow on Mei’s face only waiting for me to do something to make her laugh so I swallowed thickly and suppressed the disgusted face that I wanted to make.
“You happy now?” I squeezed out when I could talk again and Kay chuckled “I’m happy when that tray is empty, my friend” She pushed the tray further to me but I declined.
“I’m think one for starters is enough, okay?” I asked and both Mei and Kay looked disappointed so I grabbed another downed it, and that went way easier down my throat but began to heat my belly immediately and both Kay and Mei followed with their drinks.
“I think you are not a hopeless case, I think… with a little work we can make you into one hard-ass drinking-” Kay started but I held my hand up.
“Don’t even say it!” And Kay closed her mouth while Mei chuckled “Too early, huh?”
I rolled my eyes and went over to my daily routine, I chucked all the tables, and opened the main entrance, Johnny made his way into the bar only 30 minutes later eyed me, and the other two girls knowingly but with a small smirk on his face.
“Kay? I heard some of your favorite guests gonna be soon back in town…” Johnny said while I waited for him to hand me some beers for table 4. The bar was slowly getting crowded and it the time was flying by.
Suddenly Kay appeared by my side, her eyes twinkling and I was confused, what where her favorite guests? Or better who?!
“Uhhuuu… don’t tell Kay something like that Johnny! She won’t be able to concentrate the next days!” Mei stood suddenly on my other side and I frowned even more.
“Who-” I started but Kayla interrupted me “When? What did you hear?” She asked and Johnny chuckled, “I don’t know when exactly but should be some time this week” With that Kayla was apparently satisfied and went away serving her table.
“Who are her favorite guests?” I turned to Mei and she grinned, “You will see when they appear here, believe me.” She said and I was even more curious now “And how do I know that-”
“You will know” Mei said again and chuckled “I always forget you are just here for a few weeks, and you haven’t seen them around… It will be fun”
They left me alone after that and I went back to serving my drinks, what does that mean? And why would someone be the favorite guests? Did they give good tips or were they super nice?
“YO! I SAID ANOTHER WHISKEY AND NOT THIS FUCKED UP CHEAP SHIT U SERVED!” A guy yelled from directly behind me and I frowned, what the hell?
I breathed deeply in and out and put a smile on that I didn’t feel.
“Excuse me, can I help you?” I asked and he stood before me, at least one head taller than me glaring me down, his breath stank of alcohol and I had to put all my courage together not to turn away or back down.
“EXCUSE ME?! WHAT THE FUCK!” He raged and his breath was really annoying me. I carefully took a step back when I saw how his eyes wandered from my face to my breasts and stayed there while he licked his lips.
“WHISKEY! And you better hurry, blondie!” His hand moved to my hip and my eyes grew wide when he grabbed me forcefully. The bar was full and I didn’t see anyone who could help me right now.
“Let me go!” I said and I was proud my voice wasn’t breaking, I heard laughing and hollering from his table that seemed to urge the guy on with his disgusting behavior, making my fear double up.
“Or what?” He taunted his face coming closer to mine, while his hand was digging into my skin, bruising probably my hip.
“Is there a problem?” I heard Kay’s voice behind me and the guy looked up “None of your business” He snapped and Kay lifted her eyebrow at that “DAN!” Kay yelled and one of our bouncers who worked on certain nights appeared behind her.
“Would you accompany this guy and his friends outside? I think they had enough and can’t seem to control themselves anymore” Kayla said and the hand on my hip got even more painful until the hand was gone and I sucked air into my lungs in relieve.
“This is not done” I heard the deep voice from the guy and I swallowed thickly, oh shit… The guy turned away, taking his three friends with him and they disappeared out the door.
I sighed heavily and felt a hand on my shoulder “You okay? Forget about that guy, he is just being a dick who drank too much” I nodded, even though the weird feeling didn’t want to leave me, I knew working in a bar wasn’t always easy, but this just scared the hell out of me.
Kim’s POV
