Single honeymoon

MATT'S POV

I took a deep breath as I adjusted my tie right in front of Cat's sorority house. It was a beautiful early summer day. If it wasn't for the cool wind while driving, my shirt would probably be soaked from the hot, humid air. The buzzing of the bees filled the air, as well as the smell of the violets that were planted right in front of the house.
I grinned at the thought of the reaction I was hoping to get. Her eyes would flicker, and her eyebrows would make that little movement I adored, the one she always made when she was surprised.

I threw myself one last glance in the rear view mirror before throwing on my jacket. I let out a silent wince when I had to twist my arm. It was strange to think that the incident with Dave occurred over three years ago when I was reminded of it every day. I improved quickly, but a small restraint remained, and I would never get used to it. It hurt to know I would never regain 100 % of my strength, but since I had to, I accepted it as a part of me.

I put on my aviators and grabbed the beautiful, unconventional bouquet of wildflowers from the back seat before Cat finally emerged from the building, not seeing me yet. She was wearing an aquamarine dress that highlighted her beautiful green eyes even from across the driveway.

I made a mental note to thank her roommate Farrah, the Moroccan girl with the straight As for sending her out at the very right time. "Hello there," I said, raising my voice so she'd see me, "you look breathtaking. Care for someone to accompany you to that event?" Her eyes widened as she spotted me.

"Matt? But... I thought you had a show tonight?" Her dimple popped out as she threw me a smile.
I grinned. Nothing an unexpected cold couldn't solve. I was the singer after all. And today was a special day, so I wasn't feeling as guilty as I thought I would.
"I've been driving all night and instead of a proper hello you're gonna remind me of work? Well thank you very much!"
She let out a giggle as she came closer as quickly as her high heels allowed her to.

"I'm so glad you came," she said before finally closing that annoying gap between our mouths. I couldn't help but smile into the kiss as I felt the familiar rush of endorphins in my stomach. All too soon for my taste, it had to end.

I opened the car's door for her and off we went. It was the day she would officially graduate from her PhD studies in genetics. She'd already found a job at a technical university in Orange County, so she would finally move in with me. It hadn't always been easy in the past with her living in San Francisco and me being in Huntington or anywhere else in the world, but then again it never would be. Still, we were strong enough. And I couldn't wait for her to be the one I'd come home to.

I took a second to finally take in her beauty as we drove to the university's graduation hall, our hands entwined right between the front seats. If anything, I became even more sure that she was the one. And I was happy that it worked out the way it did for us.

CAT'S POV

The afternoon passed by quickly. Lots of speeches and readings and congratulations from different people I didn't know were practically forced on me. It was boring and also kind of weird to know I'd probably never see my classmates again. Most of them were going to Europe. I, too, had been offered a lucrative place in Southern England, but since I planned my future with Matt, i didn't want to be on another continent.

Our dean was finally done with his speech. I drifted away somewhen during the speech, to my own little daydream. Matt and I living together in his house, redecorating it, cuddling in the middle of the room. But then, suddenly, a very real Matt was standing on the podium. Was I dreaming? While I was still wondering what he was doing there, he started talking. Suddenly, I heard my name and at once, I snapped out of my trance.

He slowly made his way right to the table I was sitting at with my parents and sisters. My mom touched my arm with tears in her eyes. Wait? What was happening? No matter how hard I tried to concentrate on what they and Matt were saying, I couldn't make out a single word.

Was this really the moment I'd been dreaming of for so long?

Suddenly, Matt stood right in front of me, smiling at me with his wonderful dimples. Once again I was overwhelmed by his unique scent as he was so close to me. I inhaled deeply. This was it.

"Caitlin May Anderson," he said as he dropped down on one knee. His beautiful hazel eyes met mine. My heart was pounding so fast I thought I would explode.

It felt like everything was slowing down. I wanted to cherish this moment, wanted to make it last forever. Him and me in our own little world. I wished I could relive it over and over again.

And then I spotted the little box.

"Cat, will you marry me?" The ring was beautiful and perfect. A thousand jolts of electricity seemed to rush through me. My eyes started watering.

"Of course I will!" As a thousand butterflies exploded in my stomach, I pressed my lips to his. For the first time in years, I felt nothing but pure joy.

Thank you all so much for the support and the critical acclaim (haha!) I've been receiving in the last bunch of months. I haven't been able to update as frequently as I hoped, but I finally managed to finish the story. I promise it won't be like that with the next story, I'm gonna pre-write so many chapters that I won't run out so quickly.
