Haunting My Heart

Set Mei Free

Mei watch with a wide smile on her face. Maybe she had a chance now. Father Gregory blessed the newest additions to the night, for their protection, as well as the extra crosses the girls brought. One would need to be placed in each room as he blessed the house. Dr. Evans, and the orderlies were quick to grab up the cameras and tape recorders. If there was anyone that was going to document how ridiculous this all was, it was going to be them. They went through the house, room by room as Father Gregory said his blessings, splashing Holy Water while Carol Ann burned sage. The guys helped nail crosses above doors, and the further along they got, the heavier the air got, and it wasn't just the believers that could feel it.

The group reached Matt's room, the last one that needed to be blessed. "This was Mei's room." Kim whispered sadly. She felt Jimmy's arm go around her, and she leaned into him. It was really comforting to have him by her side. The priest and Matt were the first to step into the room, and before anyone could follow, the door slammed shut on it's own. "It's here." Carol Ann whispered as she met Mei's worried eyes. She's been following them through out, feeling their energy making her stronger. "What's here?" Mrs. Sanders asked, visibly nervous. "The evil that lives in the house."

Father Gregory went on with his blessing. Matt even though terrified now, nailed a cross above the door only to watch it go flying off the wall. The bedroom door opened suddenly, startling everyone. In front of everyone's eyes, Father Gregory was lifted up by an unseen force, and flung out of the room, crashing into the hallway wall. "I'm fine." he said as people came to help him up. Matt was about to join everyone back in the hall, but once again the door slammed shut. "Shit." he hissed, as he tried to open the door, but it wasn't budging. "Matt!" he heard his dad yell from the other side of the door, as he too tried to get it open with no luck.

Mei moved through the door, but didn't show herself to Matt. She was too busy watching the large dark mass that was rising up through the floor behind him. Matt could feel his heart race, sensing something that wasn't Mei behind him. He turned nervously to look but didn't see anything. He could feel it though. The snake like arms came out of it, and started to slither towards him, but Mei wasn't going to let it take him, not like it did her. "Leave him alone!" she yelled before releasing another burst of energy. The darkness vanished in a poof, and the house shook a little before everything went quiet, and the door slowly opened on it's own.

Everyone's eyes were wide when Matt stepped out of the room, most confused, and scared as to what just happened. "You see now why I told you to save your energy?" Carol Ann asked as Mei stepped out of the room. "She's talking to herself again." Matt's mother whispered. "I don't think she's talking to herself." her husband replied, believing in his son's story more and more as the night continued. Mei gave Carol Ann a nod, "Where did it take you?" she asked. "In the basement." Mei told her. Carol Ann nodded, and turned her attention back to the group. "We need to go to the basement. That's where Meike was taken, that's where we need to open the doorway." She told them as she met some confused, but also some determined eyes.

The group was about to leave when suddenly the air got extremely heavy. Everyone's heads snapped to the far end of the hall when the sound of a door slamming echoed the hallway. Panic set in when one by one, doors on both sides of the hall were violently slammed shut, and the lights started to flicker. "We have to go now!" Carol Ann yelled over what sounded like a strong wind swirling around them. She knew what was there, she could see it. Mei wasn't the only one. They turned to leave when a strong gust of "wind" pushed through the hall, knocking a few people over. "What was that?" Mrs. Sanders questioned now completely terrified. What the hell was going on. "It's just the wind." Dr. Evans tried the easiest explanation getting some eye rolls from the teens. "I don't think so, sir." one of the orderlies said as he looked at the screen on the camera.

Dr. Evans walked over to him, and examined the footage the orderly was looking at. They may have not seen it, but the camera did. There plain as day was a black, transparent mass that passed right through them. "There's obviously something wrong with the camera." he shrugged it off. "That's bullshit, and you know it." Mei said, even though he couldn't hear her. How could this guy still deny something is here after everything that has happened so far. "What a load of crap." Matt said pushing past the doctor to head to the basement. "Language, Matthew." his mother scolded, but quickly followed. It was hard denying it now. There was definitely something going on in this house.

The group made their way to the basement, and Mei showed Carol Ann exactly where she was standing when the darkness took her. Carol Ann placed a large, three-wick, white candle on the spot, and lit it. "Place the others around the room," she instructed the girls who were carrying around the items in their bags, "Do you have the salts?" she asked receiving a nod before Tammy handed her a container of sea salt. The girls placed the candles around the room, as Father Gregory did one last blessing before the final battle began.

"You all need to stand in this circle of salt, and join hands," Carol Ann explained as she made a large circle around the candle, "The circle will add extra protection as the exorcism is being done. You need to focus your mind and energy on Meike and the doorway she needs to get out. It is important that you keep her on your mind at all times. Just as she can use your energy, so can the darkness, and it will. Focusing on Meike will make it harder, but not impossible."

Matt, Jimmy, and Tammy didn't hesitate to step into the circle, and join hands. Jimmy reached his out to Kim, seeing the fear clear in her eyes. "Stay by me. I promise to keep you safe." he said, getting a nervous nod before she took his hand, and stepped into the circle. Brian was next to follow, getting an approving smile from Tammy as he took her hand. One by one everyone else followed, joining hands as they stepped into the circle until the only ones left was Father Gregory, Dr. Evans and his orderlies. Carol Ann looked at the doctor with a cocked brow, "Are you joining us?" she questioned. "We'll observe from here." Dr. Evans told her, but the look his orderlies shared wasn't saying the same thing. "That choice is yours, but I cannot guarantee your safety outside the circle." she told him.

The orderlies shared another glance before setting up their cameras on some shelves, and abandoning the doctor to join the circle. They've seen enough, and this fucker didn't speak for all of them. Dr. Evans narrowed his eyes on them, but kept his place outside the circle. Carol Ann gave nod to Father Gregory to start. The air in the house started to get heavy again as he started with the Lords Prayer. Mei watched both nervous, and excited. God she hoped this worked. She could feel the energy coming off everyone as they focused on her, and the doorway, but that wasn't all she could feel. "This is the house of the Lord now, and you are commanded to leave." Father Gregory's voice was the last thing she heard before the room went completely black around her.

Mei felt the panic set in when the demonic growl started to echo around her, but she wasn't the only one to hear it. The nerves throughout the circle were clear as the growl got louder and louder. Matt knew what it was, he has heard it before, and he knew they were pissing it off. He kept his mind focused on Mei and her doorway to freedom. He wasn't going to let it take her this time. "What is that?" Johnny asked with a shaky voice. "Shhhh," Carol Ann whispered, "Focus."

Father Gregory continued to move about the room, reading scripture, and commanding to spirits to leave. The candles went out when another gust of "wind" swirled through the room. Hands squeezed tighter together when the unseen force tried to pull them apart. Dr. Evans started to second guess his decision to stay out of the circle as he watched things fly off shelves on their own towards the circle, but they never hit anyone. It was like they were stopped by an invisible wall, and just dropped to the floor. He was in complete awe until a force knocked him back, and into a shelf behind him. "Focus!" Carol Ann yelled over the noise of the swirling wind when eyes went to the doctor. He quickly climbed to his feet, dodging a hammer that came flying at him as he hurried to the circle, and squeezed himself in. There was definitely some fucked up shit going on here.

Mei, not knowing what was going on found herself searching the darkness for anyway to get back to them. What happened? Where did she go? "Meike," she heard Carol Ann's voice in the darkness, "You have to fight it." she told her. "How? I can't even see it!" she yelled into the darkness, not knowing it would show itself to her very soon. "Your energy, Meike, use your energy. The trapped souls are the key. Use your energy to help them break free. You must weaken it." Mei nodded even though no one could see her. She narrowed her eyes, and determination set in as she felt the evil's presence start to creep up behind her. Mei turned around, and her eyes went wide. She had never seen it like this. The souls from the lives lost. She could see their faces, black as they tried to push their way out of the darkness. Father Gregory was weakening it, but not enough. "Help them break free." Carol Ann's voice sounded one more time.

There wasn't a single heart in that basement that wasn't thudding against a chest. The items on the shelves stopped flying around, but the howling wind was still swirling at full force. "The final battle is about to begin!" Carol Ann yelled, "Focus, she needs you now more than ever!" She shared a glance with Father Gregory, and he began to get more forceful and demanding as he commanded the evil to leave. "You can do this, Mei." Matt whispered as he squeezed his eyes shut, seeing nothing but her beautiful face behind his lids.

Mei balled up her fist, and stood square with the black mass towering before her. She could feel everyone's energy flowing through her, "Let them go!" she yelled, not hesitating to knock it back with her most powerful burst yet. "The power of Christ compels you! Leave this house!" she could hear the Father's voice now. Mei could see the souls stretching at the mass as they tried to escape. It looked like it had tentacles, a sight she won't soon forget. "They don't belong to you!" she joined her forces with Father Gregory, and let out another burst of energy, severing two of the "tentacles".

A loud roar was heard through both realms, shaking everyone to the core. Mei watched as two white balls of light flew out of the mass, and disappeared into the darkness above. "You can't have them!" Mei continued her attack, cutting another soul free with her energy. She could feel it getting weaker and weaker as she continued her assault, "You can't have me!" she yelled, taking a step forward, and releasing more of her power, knocking it back more. "Go back to Hell!"

"In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, I command you to leave this house at once!" Father Gregory's voice echoed. Mei shielded her eyes as a huge beam of bright white light shot up, and strait through the mass. She watched the best she could as the darkness split in half with an ear piercing roar, and hundreds of smaller balls of light shot out of it in all directions. All disappearing in the darkness above. The mass vaporized in an explosion sending a shock wave through her. The light disappeared as if sucked back down in the ground, and Mei was left standing there alone in the dark. Did it work? If it did, why was she still here? How could she get back to everyone? Just as quickly as the questions flowed through her mind, she felt something yank her back hard into the darkness.

Wide, nervous, and confused eyes looked around at each other. The wind had stopped suddenly, and everything got an eerie quiet. Did it work? Where was Mei? "Focus on the doorway," Carol Ann said as she closed her eyes, "We are not done yet." Everyone followed her lead, and shut their eyes. They didn't exactly know how they were suppose to do this, so they just pictured a regular door, opening. The air in the house wasn't as heavy, and they could feel the evil presence was gone. "Concentrate, she's almost here." Carol Ann whispered. Only Father Gregory saw all the candles in the basement light back up again. Confused eyes started to open when the sound of wood crackling like it was on fire could be heard above them.

They looked up in time to see a bright circle of light start to form above them, growing bigger, and bigger the harder they concentrated. Soon it was the size of their circle, and eyes got a little wider when they noticed something, or rather someone floating down out of it. "Don't break the circle." Carol Ann warned when she notice Matt wanting to move forward to catch her. Mei's eyes were closed as she floated down on her back, clearly unconscious. Matt waited only until she was resting on the floor of the circle, and the light was gone, before he broke it, and quickly knelt down next to her. "Mei?" he whispered as he pulled her into his lap. He couldn't believe it worked. He couldn't believe she was here. "Meike, please wake up." he continued softly as he brushed some of her hair out of her face.

A sharp intake of breath was heard, and Mei sat up, coughing. Matt sat their stunned for a moment as she caught her breath. For the first time in this physical realm their eyes met, truly in front of each other. Smiles came out on their faces, tears of joy filling their eyes, and Matt couldn't stop his hand from reaching out, and touching her face. Mei shut her eyes, feeling a shiver run through her as his fingers glided across her cheek. She was real, he was really touching her. They did it. She was here.

Mei opened her eyes, and reached out to touch him, but two others had different plans. Before she knew it she was tackled by the two familiar bodies. "We missed you so much." Kim sobbed out, squeezing her friend as tight as she could. She didn't want to loose her again. "I missed you too." Mei said, not being able to stop her own tears from falling as she hugged her friends. "We would have helped you. Why didn't you ask us to help?" Tammy asked between her own sobs, Kimmie nodding in agreement. She may have not believed it then, but she would have helped her friend. "I didn't know what would happen. You could have been stuck with me." Mei tried to explain. "At least you would have had awesome company." Tammy said teary eyed smile, getting some giggles out of her friends. "Yeah, I would have." Mei agreed as she hugged her friends again.

Mei met Matt's eyes again over her friends shoulders. He didn't want to break up the reunion between friends, but he just had to. He climbed to his feet, and looked down at her with his hands out. Tammy and Kim shared a grin before rolling off their friend, as Mei took his hands. "I'm sorry to break this up, but there's something I've been wanting to do for a long time." he told her after he pulled her up. Mei couldn't have pulled her gaze away from his hazel orbs even if she wanted to. Matt cupped her face, and just before her eyes drifted close, she felt his lips crash onto hers. Matt wrapped his arms around her, ignoring the whistles and cat calls coming from his friends, as he pulled her against him. "See, honey you were right," Mr. Sanders said nudging his wife a little, "It was a girl he liked." he smiled at her before putting an arm around her waist, and a kiss on her forehead.

Kimmie went back to Jimmy's side, and he didn't hesitate to pull her into his side with a wide smile that she couldn't help but return. The atmosphere around them completely relaxed, and everyone had smiles on their faces. Well almost everyone. Dr. Evans stood there with shock still written all over his face. He was still having a hard time processing what had just happened. How do you explain a girl floating out of the ceiling? "What says you doc?" Tammy's grinning voice broke his trance as she casually made her way back over to a certain someone. Dr. Evans looked over at her with his mouth still slightly agape. "What was that?" she asked, her smile still wide as she put a hand to her ear to listen better. The doctor just stood there speechless, not really sure what to say. "I think he says nothing." Brian snickered, and Tammy flashed him a smile. He took the opportunity to snake an arm around her waist, and she looked up at him with a cocked brow, "I'm still alive, and you still owe me." he pointed out. "Okay, pick me up at 8 tomorrow night, and you can take me UFO watching." she said, getting a chuckle as he shook his head. "7, dinner, then UFO watching." he compromised. "Deal." she said before giving him a teasing peck on the lips.

Matt, and Mei pulled away breathless. He held her face in his hands as they rested the foreheads together. "I still can't believe you're here," he whispered as they gazed deeply into each others eyes. "I can't either." she confessed. After awhile she was sure she was going to be stuck there forever. She sure wasn't expecting to find a lover within her savior. "I'm never letting you go." Matt told her softly. "I wouldn't have it any other way." she whispered before connecting their lips once again.
