Bat Country

chapter 2.

Matt's hazel eyes narrowed as he cautiously approached the broken mirror, studying the reflection staring back at him. His reflection seemed to mimic Matt's every move, but the face was far different. Instead of a bright hazel, the irises of the refelction's eyes were a deep crimson, and it's mouth was curled into a devious grin.

"Wh-who are you?" Matt stuttered, keeping his distance from the mirror.

The other man chuckled darkly, and his features suddenly but slowly began to sharpen. His cheekbones lifted a bit, his hair extending itself into a mess of long strands of raven atop his head. His eyes remained that glowing shade of red, but their shape also changed a bit, his nose becoming smaller and pointed. Matt froze, his heart beginning to race as he recognized the man before him.

"Brian? Is that you?"

"Yeah, man, it's me. I was just messin' with you before," the reflection laughed, his smile becoming more sincere.

Matt managed a small smile himself and stepped closer to the mirror, reaching out to touch it's surface. He felt nothing but cold glass, frowning slightly. "Are you trapped in there?"

There was a hint of sadness on Brian's face as his gaze dropped downward, his red eyes closing for a moment. "Yeah. It sucks."

Matt's top set of teeth sank into his lower lip gently, shaking his head. The hurt on his best friend's face was almost too much for him. He gripped the edges of the mirror firmly and shook it a bit. Nothing happened. "I'm gonna find a way to get you out of there, okay?"

Brian shifted his eyes back up to meet Matt's, his head shaking quickly. "No, Matt, it's too dangerous. She'll --"

A sputter escaped Brian's mouth, and Matt watched in horror as blood came pouring out from his lips. Matt called out his friend's name, but to no avail. Brian's vibrant red eyes rolled back into his skull, and his flesh quickly decomposed, his skin falling from his bones as he fell to the ground.

Matt took several steps backward as he gasped out, his hand covering his mouth. He shook his head quickly, screwing his eyes closed tightly. He refused to believe what he had just seen. Matt's hands covered his own face as he sobbed quietly. Of all the horrible things he had seen during his time in this hell, he'd never seen something like that. His own best friend dying before his eyes. His back hit the wall and he slid down, pulling his knees to his chest as he rocked back and forth a bit, trying to calm his own nerves. The more he thought about what he had just seen, the quicker his sanity seemed to fade away.

"You okay, big boy?"

Matt blinked, wiping the tears quickly from his eyes as he glanced up to see a woman standing in the doorway of the bathroom. She wasn't wearing much; the only things keeping her covered being a red bra and a short skirt of the same color. She had long, wavy brunette hair that fell loosely around her shoulders.

"No, I'm not. Thanks for asking," Matt answered eventually, wiping a few stray tears from his cheeks before continuing. "Just leave me alone. I'm not in the mood to be fucked around with again."

The woman laughed softly, shaking her head and crossing her arms over her chest. "I think someone needs a nap."

Matt let a soft sigh come through his nostrils and he glared up to the woman at the door, grumbling almost silently. "Fuck off already."

"What happened to your friend?" she asked, competely ignoring Matt's words, her head nodding toward the mirror.

"I don't fucking know, to be quite honest," Matt replied. He knew she wouldn't be leaving him alone any time soon. "I haven't even seen him for years, and when I do finally see him, he just fucking.. disintegrates right in front of me."

There was a long silence between Matt and the woman. She studied his features carefully, the torment plain as day on his face. She almosy pitied him. Almost.

"I can help you save your friends, you know."

"Save them?" Matt let out a short, harsh laugh, glancing up to the mirror. "They're all just doomed to meet the same fucking fate Brian did. They're trapped like I am."

"That doesn't mean it's too late, Matt," the woman spoke to him softly, putting on a front of comfort and compassion. As Matt's eyes raised to meet hers, she offered him a small smile.

"How the hell do you know my name?" Matt asked, furrowing his brows slightly.

"Don't worry about that right now," she shook her head, stepping closer to the man sitting in the corner of the room. "Do you want my help or not?"

"I.." Matt began, dropping his gaze to the floor, shaking his head in confusion. "Who are you?"

She extended her hand toward him, giving him a slight grin and raising a brow. "Just call me Disa."

Matt's eyes fixed on her hand for a moment, his mind telling him not to trust her. But she seemed to know an awful lot about him and his friends...

He took her hand, and Disa helped him to his feet, Matt now considerably taller than her. Matt's eyes remained narrowed as he looked down at her smiling face. "Now, how is it that you can help me?"

She let out somewhat of an innocent giggle and pulled her hand from his, her eyes scanning his torso as she spoke. "Well, there are a great number of ways I could help you, Matt. But I'm thinking you're referring to the situation with your friends." She took Matt's silence and slight frown as her cue to continue. "You and your friends are in a little place I like to call Limbo."

Matt raised his brows, a look of confusion crossing his features. "What the hell is Limbo?"

"Limbo," she sighed, rolling her eyes and continuing as if she had told this same speech a thousand times, "is a place just on the edge of Hell. You're in Purgatory, Matt, and you're getting dangerously close to the underworld. But I can help you escape."

He looked away from Disa for a moment, tossing the things he had just heard around in his head for a moment. He then looked back down into her eyes. "What's the price?"

A wide grin slowly spread across her face as she glanced down, taking one of Matt's hands in her own. Her fingertips traced across his palm and she gazed up into his eyes, speaking softly. "Your soul."
