Would I Die For You?

Ride into the sunset

The rain has completely stopped and the sun is battling to shine through the light grey clouds that are covering the city. The ground is nearly dry and it’s still warm.

Jamie heads to a street stall, rummaging through her satchel goes up to the old, Asian lady serving.

JAMIE: Erm…ten Sovereign please.

LADY: No Sovereign.

JAMIE: Oh erm…ten Mayfair then.

LADY: Only got menthol.

JAMIE: That’ll do.

The lady puts the packet on the high counter top.

LADY: £7.62.

JAMIE: For ten?!

LADY: Twenty.

JAMIE: I only want ten-

LADY: Don’t have ten. £7.62-

Jamie mutters under her breath as she rummages though her bag for any extra change.

JAMIE: Doesn’t matter-

A hand reaches across her from slightly behind, takes the packet and gives the woman a ten-pound note.

MAN: I’ll get these for her-

JAMIE: (Turning around.) I don’t need char- (seeing a very good looking man standing directly behind her,) –ity.

Only slightly taller than Jamie, the man smiles down at her.

MAN: You look like you’re having a rough day, and the best thing for a rough day is a smoke, and if you’ve not got any a rough day can only get harder. Let me help you out, okay?

JAMIE: (While the man gets his change.) Oh, right. Well…thank you.

MAN: (Walking from the stall, with Jamie following.) And besides, it’s not charity, I’m only gonna give you a few to help you ride out that rough day we were talking about.

JAMIE: (She looks down, blushing slightly.) Yeah.

The man opens the packet and hands her a cigarette, Jamie already has her lighter in hand and sparks the cigarette. The man rubs his hands over his pockets.

MAN: Oh, I can’t find my lighter. (Pointing at hers.) Do you mind?

JAMIE: Oh no…

She goes to hand him her lighter. Her cigarette in her mouth. He leans forward and lights his straight from hers. She tries to study his face that’s so close to her own, almost making her eyes cross. The smoke from the cigarette gets caught in the back of Jamie’s throat; she chokes on it making her cough and splutter.

JAMIE: Oh shit – sorry.

MAN: (Laughing.) It’s cool. I’ll just, uhm, use the lighter, yeah?

She fumbles with the lighter, unable to light it, he holds her hand and lights it for her. He drags hard on the cigarette to light it. Looking at her, smirking. She takes the lighter back and pops it back into her bag.

They continue to walk.

MAN: I hope you don’t mind me saying, Jamie, but-

JAMIE: How do you know my name?

MAN: (Pointing to the badge on the shoulder bag ‘Jamie’ .) How else?

JAMIE: You’re very observant…

MAN: I guess so.

JAMIE: Clearly we've established that you can read.

MAN: I can indeed.

JAMIE: Care to enlighten me with your name?

MAN: Ah, I don’t go putting my information out there for the whole world to see.

JAMIE: The whole world doesn’t tend to stare at my bag.

MAN: Staring am I now?

JAMIE: It would seem that way. Maybe I should just tell that copper over there you’re pestering me-

MAN: I just bought you cigarettes-

JAMIE: Correction, you just bought me one cigarette.

Jamie lightly skips a couple of steps towards the police officer.

MAN: (Calling after her.) It’s Zachary Baker. That good enough?

JAMIE: (Turning back.) I didn’t want a full title Zachary Baker. But thanks.

ZACKY: Since you’ve now got the ‘full title’, you wanna go for a coffee? You know, might cheer you up with the rough day?

JAMIE: (Stopping walking, frowning.) No offence, Zachary Baker, but I don’t actually know you-

ZACKY: Well, that was part of the reason for the coffee, you seem like a laugh. Thought we, er...could chat, get to know each other a little-?

JAMIE: Uhm… no. Sorry. This is London, and for all I know you could be, (thinking fast) a zombie, mass murdering raspiest!

ZACKY: Seriously-?

JAMIE: (Shrugging her shoulders.) Yeah.

ZACKY: It’s a coffee, in a public place-

JAMIE: Sorry mate.

Jamie turns, runs down the busy high street.

JAMIE: (Calling back to him.) Thanks for the ciggy!

With a wave of her arm, her back towards him, she runs into the road, narrowly missing a black cab, which beeps at her, receiving the two-fingered salute from Jamie who quickly vanishes into the sea of people.

Zacky is left standing, watching the space in which Jamie ran into.

MATT: You know you’re supposed to be protecting her?

ZACKY: (Jumping slightly not knowing Matt was behind him.) I don’t wanna spook her, she’ll do a vanishing act and then we’re all fucked.

Zacky and Matt turn away in the opposite direction and walk down the busy high street. It’s different from when Zacky and Jamie walked down, though it’s busy they don’t seem to move out of other people’s ways, people part away, giving the two men space to easily glide though the mass.

MATT: This is getting serious Zacky. We’re losing the battle!

ZACKY: And I’ll win the war-

MATT: Look! (Stopping Zacky in his tracks.) I’m not in the mood for your fucking around anymore! I’ve bailed you out too many times, and I’ve had enough! I meant it Zacky, that last time, was definitely the final time! Got it?!

ZACKY: (Smirking.) Dude, do you not trust me?

Another crowd of people surround them, when they clear, Matt and Zacky have vanished.
