Sshh, Be Quiet

Fuzzy Faces

The group-minus Lisa-met back together for dinner, which consisted of some frozen pizza and pop. Dinner was not silent though, as vast amounts of vulgar and obscene chatter filled the room.

Lisa was asleep for a couple of hours, sleeping off her headache. Someone would check on her occasionally to make sure she was okay, but never waking her. She had woken up suddenly, like someone had shaken her awake. Sitting up, she looked around and saw nobody. “Huh...”

It had taken her a moment before she realized that her headache had disappeared. The lump still remained on her head, and when she touched it, she winced as a wave of pain washed over her. Grumbling, Lisa got out of bed, suddenly feeling as though a gust of cold wind had blown through the room. Shivering and rubbing her arms, she went to find where the sudden chill came from. The window remained sealed, and no air appeared to be blowing in. “Meh...” she mumbled to herself. Shrugging it off, Lisa headed out and went downstairs, following the sound of the obscene chatter into the kitchen.

“Hey, sleepyhead!” Jimmy shouted as he was the first one to see her enter the room.

“I wouldn't have been asleep if somebody hadn't decided to play a prank that injured me,” Lisa retorted, wearing a snarky smile as she sat next to her best friend and grabbed a slice of pizza.

“How is the ole' noggin anyways?” Stephanie asked.

“It's better. My headache went away, but the lump is still there and quite painful,” she said before taking a large bite of pizza. “So what'd I miss?” she asked through her mouthful.

“Not much,” Zacky said. “Talking, swearing, that's about it.”

“Wow, you guys are so much fun,” Lisa said, rolling her eyes. “So what's the plan for after dinner then?”
“Movies.”

After cleaning up dinner plates, the group sat in the living room and watched a movie. About halfway through it though, the TV started to blink and get fuzzy.

“What the fuck? I just bought this TV last month,” Matt said as he went and kicked it.

“Yeah, and kicking it really helps,” Lisa said with a chuckle.

The screen eventually turned fully into snow as everyone watched Matt repeatedly hitting the back of it. He took the movie out of the Xbox, thinking that it was just a scratched DVD, but the display still showed the black and white static.

“Whoa!” Jenna exclaimed, startling the group. “I think…I just like saw a face or something in that fuzz. That's fucking creepy.”

“Probably the news reporter or something,” Lisa said.

“No, I swear I saw a face appear in the middle of all of that.”

“She’s going insane,” Johnny said.

“Shut up,” Jenna said, smacking him.

“Wait, she’s not insane. I saw it too. Just now,” Matt said, staring intently at the TV.

“Well, that settles it. This house is truly haunted, and those two are the first to go insane. The TV is
possessed by a demon, and we're all going to die,” Zack said, trying to hold back his laughter.

Before anybody could respond to Zack, the TV had made a fizzling noise and then just shut off completely. Matt cursed and kicked it some more, pissed off that his brand new TV was already broken. The other nine just looked at each other with concern and confusion. As the room grew quiet, Jimmy started to mumble. “One, two, three...”

“Jimmy. Don't,” Brian spoke up, raising an eyebrow at his friend.

“Three, three, four...”

“Jimmy. I will smother you with a couch cushion.”

“Ten, Eleven...ooohhh shit...”

Lisa giggled. “Oh shit, what's in the bucket...”

“What's in the bucket....” Jimmy sang along with Lisa.

“Shut up you two,” Brian said, cutting them off.

They both frowned and stopped singing. Lisa however, couldn't resist. “Grapes in the mouth make me happy down south. Make you get a big boner, whatcha gonna do?,” she sang before bursting out into laughter.

Brian responded by throwing a pillow at her head. Within a few more minutes, a pillow fight broke out, and just before the drinks on the table were wiped clean off, a deafening noise filled the room. All eyes turned to Matt by the TV, and the snow was back.

“This thing is fucked,” Matt said, reaching behind and unplugging it.

More silence filled the room. Moments later, that was broken by Korynn throwing a pillow at Zacky. And again, another pillow fight broke out. This time it got more physical, and this time, the table did end up getting wiped clean.

“Oh shit,” Emily said. “I think that was my bad.”

“I think we all had a part in that,” Lisa said, throwing her pillow at Brian before standing up to head to the kitchen for cleaning supplies.

Their concentration on the mess was cut short by the same fuzzy sound coming from the TV, but sounding like the volume had been turned up all the way. As soon as it started, everybody jumped about a foot into the air, with various curse words being shouted.

“Dude, Matt, just keep it unplugged,” Jimmy said.

“It is,” Matt said, holding up the plug.

Ten pairs of wide eyes stared at the TV that was clearly on, yet clearly unplugged. Almost as soon as all eyes fell on it, the TV turned off. Matt plugged it back in and pressed buttons. Nothing.

“It's getting late,” Stephanie said. “Just unplug it and leave it for now.”

A round of goodnights were exchanged and the group headed for the stairs, splitting up into their rooms. Lisa changed into her pajamas and flopped down onto her bed with a book. Brian was doing his bathroom thing for a while, then he sat on his bed with a laptop.

“Do you even have internet on that?” Lisa asked.

“Yeah. It's a horribly slow connection, but eh, it still works.”

“No porn, okay?” Lisa said with a giggle.

“No, no porn. Just e-mail checking.” He glanced over and saw her face almost buried in a book. “So, what are you reading?”

“’Battle Royale.’”

“Oh? That's the Japanese one with the kids that have to kill each other isn't it?”

“Yeah!” Lisa exclaimed, surprised that he knew the story. “Shit, you're the first person I've met that knows about the story.”

“What can I say, I have a crazy imagination, and crazy friends,” he laughed. “I wish the movie portrayed some of the deaths like the book or even the Manga series did.”

“Same here. I've read some of the Manga, and some of it is so much more twisted than the book or movie. Still love it though. I love violence, blood, and gore-fictional that is.”

“Nice,” Brian responded before turning his attention back to his computer.

Lisa continued reading while Brian typed away on his laptop. About an hour later, Lisa put her book down, set her glasses on top of it, and rolled over, pulling the covers up to her chin. She started to fall asleep until Brian started swearing.

“What’s the matter?”

“My laptop is being weird. Almost like the TV,” Brian said. “Shit. Well, fuck it.” He closed it up and set it on the nightstand. “Going to sleep?”

“Yeah. You can shut the light off.”

“Okay. Goodnight.”
