Hide and Seek

Uncharted Territory

Victoria woke up feeling a strong headache pounding behind her left eye. As her vision got adjusted to the surroundings, she realized that she was lying on a bed, inside of an unfamiliar bedroom. It hurt to breathe, her thoughts moved like thick muddy waters and as soon as she tried to sit, she discovered that the slight movement drove a cutting pain through her muscles and ribs. Every square inch of her flesh pulsated. Throbbed. Burned.
Victoria looked around the room. It was night and the only luminosity in the bedroom was the moonlight that the big window ahead of her framed. Outside, she could see the moon reflected on the water, but she couldn’t figure out if it was a big lake or an ocean. She needed to know where she was, but she had lost track of time. For all she knew, she could be in another country by now.
She took a deep breath before trying to get up, but instead she just fell to the floor. She froze, not wanting to move anymore, fearing more agony, but nausea overruled everything and had her rolling to her side. The contents of her stomach rose up in her throat.
With steady, controlled breaths, Victoria tried to calm herself down and a few minutes later she tried to rise again, searching for support on the edge of the bed, but her insides screamed. Again, she collapsed.

“What are you doing on the floor?” She opened her eyes as she immediately recognized Zacky’s voice, realizing she had dozed off. Victoria tried to move away from him, but all she could do was moan in pain. He crouched, meeting her eyes, an intentional smirk hanging on his face. “Relax my love; the side effects will soon be gone. Do you want me to help you get to bed?”

“Let me go!” She tried to scream, but the words escaped through gritted teeth. Even talking had become painful. Zacky’s smile only grew bigger.
“The cops are going to find you. They will find you and they will kill you. You are dead Zacky.”

This time Zacky laughed. A laughter that sent chills through her spine. “Now Victoria, you shouldn’t talk to me like that. Where are your good manners?” He stood up and looked at her once again before leaving the bedroom. With one loud sound, a deadbolt locked her in the darkness again.

A dark figure chased her as she struggled to run and get away, but the faster she ran the slower she moved. She tried to scream, but no sound came from her mouth. And just when her pursuer had caught her, when his icy hands had touched her bare flesh, Victoria woke up with a start.
The bedroom was now fully lightened up, the white walls reflecting the sunlight a little too much for her eyes to bear. She shielded them with her hand and quickly realized that she was now lying on the bed again, underneath the bed covers and wearing one of her nightdresses. She closed her eyes, a frown line appearing between her eyebrows. Zacky had changed her clothes.
An annoyed grunt escaped from her lips.
Slowly, she sat on the edge of the bed. At least the pain had now vanished, leaving just a sensation of soreness around her neck and shoulders. Looking around the bedroom, she noticed her suitcases standing next to the window and after making sure that she could stand, Victoria ran towards them. Kneeling next to them, she searched for her cell phone and then, once she couldn’t find it, for her wallet. There was no sign of it either. No ID card, no cash, nothing that could help her escape that place. Just two bags full of clothes, shoes, hygiene products and books.
Victoria shoved out a breath and let her back fall against the wall. Her eyes wandered around the big bedroom and just as she glanced at the wall above the bed headboard, a cold sensation settled in her belly. Her eyes widened and fear rose up as she looked at the massive collection of photos displayed on the wall. Photos of her. Photos she never realized he had taken, in places she never realized he had been. She felt like breaking down in tears, but quickly wrestled it down. Now was not the time to crumble. She needed to find a way to escape.
Footsteps made Victoria stand up impulsively, her eyes desperately searching for a place to hide. With a few movements the deadbolt slid free and the door opened.

“Good, you’re awake.” Zacky appeared on the other side of the door, making Victoria freeze on her way to the bed. He looked at her for a few seconds, amusement written all over his face. “Were you going to hide from me?” He almost laughed. “Under the bed?”

“No.” Victoria quickly took one step away from the bed. That had been a pretty stupid idea.

Zacky crossed the room, walking in her direction as she took small steps away from him. The smile on his face showed that he was more than amused by her fear. “Come on, honey. I bet you’re starving.” He took her by the elbow, but Victoria quickly diverted from him.
“Believe me, you do not want to run away from me. ”His tone was condescending, yet Victoria ignored it and ran towards the door.
A sudden sharp pain in the back of her head made her fall into her knees. “I told you not to run away from me.” Zacky’s hand grabbed a large amount of red hair and tears started to form in Victoria’s eyes.

“Please, just let me go.” Her voice had lost all the strength. “I won’t tell anybody, just let me go.” She whined.

He shook his head, his expression dark and brooding. “Why would I let you go, after having all this trouble to get you?” He pulled her hair higher in the air, making Victoria stand up and cry in pain.
“You belong to me, my love, there is no way to escape.” He stared at her for a long moment and then leaned forward and pressed his cheeks to hers, inhaling her scent. “Soon my love you’ll see, you’re just like me.” The words touched her ear, the heat spreading across her body, making Victoria stiffen. Zacky’s hand slid from the back of her head to the small of her back and Victoria closed her eyes, dreading for what was going to come next.
The sudden grasp on her arm made her flinch. She looked at him and his whole body had tensed up. His jaw had squared and he looked as if he was fighting himself, fighting the urge to inflict pain on her.
“Let’s go downstairs.” Zacky spoke quietly.
