Hide and Seek

The Beginning of The End

It couldn’t be a better day to start a new life. Victoria got out of her parent’s car, boxes piled up in her arms. She walked towards the big buildings that were going to be her house from now on, her parents following her closely behind.

“Welcome to Stanford University.” The room clerk smiled politely. “Your name please?”

“Victoria Jacobs.” She answered and waited for the keys to her dorm.

She could feel the electricity in the air as she walked towards her room, the corridors were full of life, with people talking or just passing by.

She opened the bedroom door and realized that her roommate had already arrived, there were already boxes next to one of the beds and some clothes on the bed. She glanced inside the room but she was nowhere to be found.

“Please don’t forget to answer the cell phone now and then.” Victoria’s mother said once again before waving goodbye. The sun had started its descending journey and filled the surroundings with a warm red glow, making Victoria wish she hadn’t left her camera inside the dorm room.

“Hey there you are!” Victoria was greeted once she opened the dorm’s door. “I’m your roommate, Karen.” She smiled at the blond and blue eyed girl before being caught up in a hug.

“I’m Victoria.” She replied, feeling a little bit uncomfortable by the way her big blue eyes stared at her.

“Oh I’m sorry.” Karen blushed slightly. “I really like your hair.” She stared at it again, feeling the urge to touch it. “May I?” She asked and Victoria laughed. It wasn’t the first time her bright red hair had caused this type of reaction. Although her natural hair color was light brown, she was used to dye it frequently for almost a year, and she didn’t intend on changing that anytime soon.

A couple of hours later, Victoria had done unpacking most of her things and left the room with Karen. They had dinner and Karen suggested they go to party, something that it wasn’t much to her liking, but she agreed anyway.

The atmosphere inside the frat house was heavy with the smell of smoke, alcohol and sweat. The music was too loud, making it impossible to a have a normal conversation with anyone. Victoria looked around and watched Karen disappear in the crowd. Not that anyone really wanted to have a conversation. Everybody seemed too busy dancing, drinking or making out.

Victoria grabbed a beer and sat on the stairs, watching Karen dancing with a guy that she probably didn’t know.

What she didn’t know was that she was also being watched. Across the room, standing in a corner and sipping his beer, a man with dark hair studied every inch of her. He knew she was a freshman, he had never seen her around before.

A smile was lingering on his face, still thinking how similar her hair was to Ariel’s; from the classic animated film The little mermaid. She sure was different from the other girls he had seen around, too pretty and innocent to be wasted on a bunch of college boys.

He finished his beer and took another one. He would stay there all night if he had to, observing her and making sure she wouldn’t get into trouble. He wasn’t quite sure why, but he felt the need to protect her.

Two hours later the house didn’t seem to get less crowded, which meant the party was going to last until sunrise. Victoria was looking for Karen, but she couldn’t find her so, after a few minutes, she gave up and went home.

Outside the streets were awfully silent and there wasn’t a single breeze in the air. Everything stood still while Victoria crossed the street and walked towards the dorm’s building. Her heels echoing on the sidewalk were the only thing that made a sound and she had the strange, but constant feeling that she was being observed. She looked back several times, but there was no one in that area, it had turned into a complete desert overnight. She saw the dorm’s main entrance and picked up the pace, still trying to shake away that unpleasant feeling.

He followed her from a safe distance, never without compromising himself. For a few seconds he would get closer, so close that he could almost smell her perfume, but then he knew he had to stay behind, because he knew that she would see him if she turned around.

He saw her entering the dorm’s building and smiled to himself. He needed to get to know her and for that, he just needed a plan.

***

Victoria woke up the next morning, almost falling to the ground when she saw that she was late to her first day of classes. She looked at her roommate’s bed and it was still as she had left it the night before, which meant that Karen had stayed the whole night out.

She dressed the first pair of jeans she saw in her closet along with a black top and ran to the bathroom. Her hair was the usual mess it always was in the morning, so she decided to put it in a ponytail, running then again towards her room. She placed her favorite earrings and grabbed her books, running down the hall and almost bumping into a girl.

She was late, very late and, on top of that she couldn’t find the lecture hall where she was going to have her first class.
A taller and older girl stopped next to her, not really paying attention to Victoria. She was carrying some papers and seemed to be looking for one in particular. She stopped once she realized that she was running over Victoria.

“Oh hi there.” She greeted Victoria with a smile. “Sorry, didn’t see you there.” She laughed to herself and then studied Victoria’s face. “Do you need help? You seem a bit lost.”

“I actually need.” Victoria blushed. “I don’t know where my class is.”

The brunette glanced at her schedule and quickly indicated the way to her room.

“Thanks.” Victoria smiled.

“Anytime. By the way, I’m Emily Hunter, but people call me Em.” She stretched out her hand for Victoria to shake.

“Nice to meet you, I’m Victoria.” They shook hands and walked on opposite directions.

“If you need anything just ask for Em!” Emily shouted. “Everybody knows me!”

“I will thanks!” Victoria shouted back.

Notes

Okaaaay....So I hope you all like this idea, it is actually based on a dream I had last weekend and, since I couldn't get it out of my head, I decided to explore it a bit and make it into a fanfiction!
