Change My Ways

I open my eyes, and all I can see is darkness. As my eyes adjust, I can make out a single thin line of light coming from beneath the door at the top of stairs. I hear footsteps, and I think they’re heading my way. Suddenly, there’s a loud banging coming from somewhere, but it sounds far away at the same time. I assume it must be coming from a door to this place, or Hell, as I also like to refer to it. I hear voices, many voices, and they sound upset. I think I can hear some struggling, maybe some glass being broken. I feel like I’m a million miles away from these sounds, it’s all I can do to focus on them, but it could also be because I’m super weak right now.

Suddenly, the door at the top of the stairs opens up, and I have to close my eyes, because of the light. I try to shrink back, as best as I can, because I’m afraid that it’s him. I hear a light switch being flicked on, and footsteps practically running down the stairs. The lights are burning through my eyelids.

“Elody!” I hear a familiar voice coming toward me. I open my eyes slightly, to make sure I’m right.

“Brian?” I practically whisper, hoping this isn’t just a dream.

“Yes, it’s me. I’m going to get you down, okay? But, I’m going to need some help.” He finds a towel laying on the floor, and uses it to wrap around my naked body. I hate having him see me like this, especially since we’ve never been intimate. “I’m going to need some help down here! And something to cut some chains!” He yells upstairs, as he holds the towel around me. He looks back at me, and brushes some stray strands of hair out of my face. “I’m so sorry, Elody. I promise you that I’ll always protect you, I’ll always be here for you.” He wraps his arms around me, and I suck in a short breath, because of the pain it causes. “Oh, sorry.” He lightens his grip.

“Holy fuck.” Matt says, as he and the rest of the guys come downstairs. “I’m so sorry, Elody.” He says, coming over to us. He holds up a key, and uses it to free my hands. “Had to beat this outta that asshole.” He says, as he works. Once I’m free, Brian sits on the ground, and gently pulls me onto his lap.

“We already called the cops and ambulance, they’re on their way. You’re going to go to the hospital, so you can get better, but I’ll ride with you if I can, and I’ll be there as long as you have to be. I’m not leaving your side, okay?” He says to me, as he plants a soft kiss on my forehead. I softly nod my head in return.


“I’m sorry.” I say softly, not able to really get my voice up high. Being weak is killing me right now, all I want to do is wrap my arms around Brian, and kiss him, but I can’t. I feel like I can’t control my body at all, like I’m weighed down.

“You have nothing to be sorry for, Elody. Please don’t apologize.” Brian says.

“None of this is your fault, Elody.” Matt reassures me.

“Don’t worry. He’ll get what’s coming to him in prison.” Zacky winks at me. I try to smile in return, but I’m sure it doesn’t look even remotely like a smile.

Suddenly, I’m hit with the realization that I’m probably never going to be a mother, after all the shit I’ve been put through. I’ve already lost my baby, but now I’ll probably never get the chance to have children. I weakly bring my head up to look at Brian.

“He killed my baby, Bri. He probably killed my chances of ever having anymore, too.” I feel the tears welling up in my eyes, and I drop my head. I feel like the room is spinning right now, and I’m fading out. I hear sirens in the distance, and Brian’s voice, saying everything will be okay, then I’m gone.
