New Beginnings

The Move

*3 days later*

*Hailey’s POV*

Reading the sign “Old Port” for the third time in the last twenty minutes was not a good way to start off my first day in my new town. I pulled off to a gas station and decided it’d be best to ask for directions rather than to waste half of my tank of gas. Not getting any sleep wasn’t the best idea, Hailey…
I parked my car and walked into the corner store and decided I should grab myself a coffee. As I waited for my coffee cup to fill, a young looking guy walked towards the counter beside me and grabbed a cup for himself and started pouring some of the hot chocolate into it. He looked over at me and smiled. I nodded at him. God, he looked familiar. I figured I might as well ask him for directions, “Hey, would you happen to know where Forest Way is? I just moved here and I’m, well, kind of lost,” I shrugged and let out a small chuckle.
He set his cup of hot chocolate down and turned towards me, smiling, “Actually, I do. Good buddy of mine lives up there..” the rest of what he said who knows. My mind wanted to pay more attention to his features rather than the information he was telling me. His eyes were so crystal blue, and his hair was so perfectly spiked up, not too much though. His arms were filled with tattoos. I was suddenly brought back to planet Earth when he touched my arm. I shook my head, “So you got it? Or I can lead you there. I might as well stop by Brian’s place anyways.” he titled his head towards me and smirked.
“No, no I think I’m good,” I said, “so you take the first light and then turn left?”
He laughed, “No, go towards Old Port then take the second right, then it’s on your first left. Someone needs sleep,” he laughed some more.
“Haha, no kidding. Drove right here from Tennessee..”
“Oh, wow. Quite the trip. I’m used to those by now with the guys-” his ringtone cut him off, “hold on,” he smiled apologetically, pulling his phone out of his pocket and holding it up to his ear, “hey babe. No I’m just at the corner store grabbing some hot chocolate before heading to the studio… Yes I remembered the bagels,” his smile glowed when he was talking to her, “yes hun… Hah, love you too be right there. Bye,” he hung up and slid his phone back in his pocket, “girlfriends are quite the pests huh?” he laughed.
“Haha, because I would know,” we both laughed.
“Yeah, right? Well I should probably get her those bagels before she throws a fit. It was nice meeting you!” he smiled and went to pay for his hot chocolate. I guess making friends wouldn’t be as hard as I thought.
I grabbed some cream and sugar and dumped it into my coffee and went to the register to pay.

I found Forest Way pretty easily and drove down the street slowly, coming to my house number, 34. I looked down the driveway and at the house. Just like the pictures… I pulled up into the long driveway and parked my car at the entrance of the garage. I grabbed my coffee and purse and got out of the car. Might as well check it out before I start moving my things inside.
I walked up the walkway, taking in the view of the new neighborhood. Probably all of the rich, snobbish doctors lived down here. I stuck the key in the doorknob and unlocked the front door. I walked through the entrance and stopped, mesmerized by the beautiful entryway. A staircase spiraled up along the wall that would lead to the bedrooms and baths. To my right was an entrance to the dining area, and to my left an entrance to the den. Walking straight ahead I found the main living area which was opened to a large country-style kitchen decorated with dark wood cabinets and granite countertops. Everything I’ve ever dreamt of owning. I looked out the glass door windows and found a nice patio with a large grill and farther into the lawn a small in-ground pool. The parties I could throw here… I turned around and decided to check out the bedrooms upstairs. There were three bedrooms, two on one side of the hall and one on the other, which was the master bedroom. I opened up the door to find a large king sized best lined with silky brown sheets and quilts, and a large red abstract painting decorated the wall above the headboard. To my left I found the master bath, which had a double sink and a separate tub and shower. Too perfect. I was almost in a daydream until I started paying more attention to the pictures on the walls. The family photos I never saw. The wedding photos. The photos taken to remember the small things. The first birthdays. My graduation. It all hit me at the same time. Reality struck. The funeral was tomorrow. And there was a voice coming from downstairs.

*Brian’s POV*

After deciding to finally roll out of bed I grabbed my phone off the bedside table. The screen read “10:38 AM”. Might as well get ready to head over to the studio now. I don’t want to be the last one to get there… Again. Which also means I have no time for a shower. I promised Jimmy I’d be there by eleven or I’d let him sock me one. I walked through to my bathroom and took a look in the mirror. God, I looked like shit. I turned on the cold water from the sink and cupped water into my hands and splashed it on my face. What a wake up call. Then came on the headache. I opened the medicine cabinet and grabbed some pain killers. You’d think I’d learn not to drink so much.
I headed back to my room and grabbed a clean pair of black skinny jeans and a white v-neck from my closet and threw them on. I doused myself in cologne and put on the first pair of Nike’s I saw. With no time to style my hair, which disappointed me, I just grabbed a beanie and threw it over the mop of a hairdo I had. Rushing was something I was always good at, but I hate it. Grabbing a bottle of water on the way out I placed my aviators on my face and took a last look in the mirror. Good enough. I shrugged at my reflection and left the house.
On my way to my car I noticed the house that had seemed to be empty for about a week or so had a car in the driveway, and the front door to the house was left open. Being the good neighbor I was, I decided I should go check it out to make sure no one was robbing the place. My old neighbor was pretty well off.
I walked across the lawn and up the steps to the front door. I peeked my head through, but didn’t hear or see anybody around. The house appeared to be unharmed. I stepped through the entrance, sighing. Jimmy was gonna get me for this. Walking towards the living room I heard a door close. Sounded like it was coming from upstairs. I walked towards the staircase and looked up, “Hello?” I shouted. Nothing. “Anyone up there?” Suddenly I heard another door close and a girl, maybe 23, walked to the head of the stairs, “sorry if I scared you,” I flashed a smile at her, “I was on my way out of my house and I happened to see the door was open. Just wanted to make sure no one was breaking in. Unless you are,” I said sarcastically and laughed a little.
She gave me a nervous, weak smile, almost like she had just been upset, “You startled me. It’s okay though,” she said and walked down the stairs. Her long, wavy, brown hair bounced with each step.
I took off my sunglasses, “My name is Brian, by the way. I live right next door, if you haven’t already noticed,” I smiled and stuck out my hand for her to shake, “it’s a beautiful home. I assume you’re the newest owner?”
She took my large hand into her small one, and smiled, more heart warming this time, “Yeah, I am. My grandparents left it in my name. You probably saw it on the news what happened,” she frowned.
“I did… The mayor and his wife, so they were your grandparents? I’m so sorry for you loss. They were very nice people,” she looked so heart broken and I just wanted to hug her, but I knew it wasn’t my place to.
“It’s alright, thank you,” she raised her eyebrows a little, “and thanks for checking out the house by the way. Good to know I’ve got good neighbors. My name’s Hailey.”
“Well it’s nice to meet you,” I smiled, and looked at the wall behind her and noticed a clock that read ‘10:55’, “I suppose I should get going though, promised my friends I’d meet up with them at eleven,” I said, and nonchalantly rested a hand on her shoulder. She stiffened a little, “and if you ever need a new friend or anyone to talk to feel free to stop by my place anytime. I’m not always the best at giving advice but I feel and know your pain and I’m here to listen even though you may not know me too well. I’m not always home but when I am I’m usually alone unless I’m throwing a party, which you are welcome to attend.” I’m not so sure why I felt so comfortable telling her to come right over to my house whenever she pleased, but she seemed like a genuine person, so fuck it. The suave Brian is back, I guess.
She seemed to relax a bit, “Thanks, Brian,” she let out a sigh. She had a nice voice, “maybe I will when I’m all settled in.” she walked me to the front door and we said our goodbyes. God she was nice looking too.
I walked to the car, turning and flashing her one last smile and waved. By the time I reached the car and pulled out of my driveway it was already past eleven, and I was fucked.
