Two Pieces

Chapter 24

5 hours prior:

“Okay, Rylee one more big push and your baby girl will be here,” said Doctor Kennedy, standing at the foot of her bed wearing an encouraging smile.

She peers up at Matt for a bit of extra motivation.

“You can do it, baby. Give it your all!”

She gives a couple of nods and prepares herself. With a deep breath, she pushes with all her might. A deep growl rolls up from her throat, drowning out the nurse’s countdown. She can feel her body begin to shake from the mass amount of pressure she is exerting on her lower half.

“Holy shit, Ryles I can see her! Keep going,” prompts Matt, squeezing her hand.

She prepares herself again, taking a deep breath before pushing.

“Here she is. At exactly 1:02am.” Doctor Kennedy reaches down and pulls the newborn out gently by the shoulders.

“Would you like to cut the umbilical cord, dad?” Matt gives a broad dimpled smile and grabs the surgical scissors with a shaky hand.

Snip.

Rylee can feel Matt press multiple kisses to her forehead as he whispers affectionate words.

Meanwhile, all of her attention is focused on Geneva as they hand her over.

Nurse Betty cleans Geneva quickly with a towel. Tears roll down Rylee’s cheeks as little Geneva lies on her chest quietly. Rylee tunes out the sudden commotion around her and focuses on her non-crying baby.

She strokes her chubby cheek, hoping for a verbal response. The tears come faster when all she receives is a minor squeak. When her baby’s little arms start to flail, she cries harder. Something was wrong with her baby. She can hear Matt asking frantic questions.

“Mrs. Sanders, we have to take her immediately. It appears she’s having breathing difficulties.”

Rylee starts to sob as Geneva is taken from her embrace. Nurse Betty wraps Geneva in a clean soft towel before whisking her away.

“NO!” Rylee cries out, “Not my baby! Please God, not my baby.”

“Shh, I’m sure she’ll be fine, sweetie,” Matt reassures through his own tears.

“NO. She was supposed to be the light in our dark situation. I can't-“

“I know Rylee, and she will be. Have faith in her, please.”

“Matt I can’t loose her. Not my baby. Our sweet baby girl. If I loose her nothing will ever be the same..”

Matt cradles her head against his torso as she sobs into his shirt. For the first time in a long time he prays to God. He can’t loose two of the most important people in his life. ‘Cause he knows Rylee meant every word. If Geneva were to not make it Rylee will never recover.

“She’s been asleep for quite awhile. Is that normal?”

“Yes. She’s had a rough delivery. She should be awake soon.”

“I hope so..”

Rylee could hear the conversation between a nurse and her husband, as she lies in bed fully conscious. She’s afraid to open her eyes. Afraid of the news that her baby didn’t make it. She’d rather sleep for the rest of her life than wake up to the loss of her daughter.

The event played in her mind on repeat. Little Geneva verbally unresponsive in her arms. Her bluish skin tone. Her little arms flailing as if she were silently pleading for help.
That last image really hit a nerve as Rylee started to cry again.

“Honey?”

she kept from facing Matt as he stroked her back gently.

“Are you okay?”

Somehow his simple question made her cry harder.

Why are you concerned about me? she thought.

“I just want to know if our baby is okay. Is my little Geneva okay?”

Matt chuckled and walked over to the other side of the bed. He crouched down and took her face in his hands, wiping her tears with his thumb.

“She’s Perfect, Rylee. She’s breathing just fine now. She swallowed a lot of fluid which caused the breathing difficulties.”

“Oh my God. So glad she’s ok!” She sat up abruptly but immediately regretted doing so as a sharp pain spread through her lower region.

“Take it easy, honey.”

Rylee lied back with ease, not wanting to feel pain like that again.

“You wanna see her?” Matt asked, already knowing her answer.

“Yes. Of course.”

Her gaze followed him as he goes over to a cart sat by the window. She clasped her hands together in anticipation as he gently scooped up Geneva. She’s pleasantly surprised at how natural he looks with her.

He pressed a kiss to her chubby cheek before handing her off to Rylee. He made sure she was holding her properly before sitting in the chair beside the bed.

Rylee stared down in adoration at her beautiful daughter. Her little breaths came out rhythmically as she slept peacefully in her arms.

“She’s so beautiful, Matt.”

“I told you. She’s perfect.”

Rylee stroked her head as she took in her features. She had Matt’s eyebrows, naturally without an arch. Her nose was a perfect mixture of hers and Matt’s. Her lips resembled hers, full and plump, as well as her facial structure and dark brown hair.

Rylee’s finger stilled when Geneva started to move. She placed her little hands on her cheeks and slowly opened her eyes. Rylee gasped as Geneva gazed up at her. Her hazel eyes resembled Matt’s.

“She has your eye’s.”

“I know,” Matt beamed with pride, “Just wait until she smiles. You’ll really flip shit then.”

Rylee gave him a confused look. She didn’t know what he was talking about at first. But then it hit her.

“She has dimples!?”

“Yeah. They’re faint but the nurse said they’ll deepen as she ages.”

“I wanna see them!”

Matt stood up and leaned over the two of them. He reached out and lightly tickled Geneva’s stomach.

“Hi pretty baby. Can you smile for daddy? Show mommy that adorable smile.”

Rylee watched in shock as she immediately began to smile up at him. Faint indentations could be identified on her chubby cheeks. When Rylee rubbed her finger over one of them Geneva stopped smiling and connected her gaze with her mothers.

Matt laughed at his daughter’s actions.

“I see who her favorite is already. She’s a daddy’s girl for sure," said Rylee, “She’s heavier than I had expected. What was her measurements again?”

“She’s 7 pounds, 12 ounces and 20 inches long. She’ll probably be taller than you by the time she’s 18,” said Matt.

“Goodness. Good thing she has my facial structure. Otherwise she’d be your twin."

“Nothing wrong with that,” he teased.

Rylee rolled her eyes playfully.

“But I think we did a damn good job…We should make more!”

Rylee laughed weakly.

“Not anytime soon. My vag is not ready, dude.”

Matt let out a throaty laugh.

“Fine. I’ll give you a year or two.”

Rylee grew quiet for a couple minutes.

“Lie down with us. Please?” she asked him.

“Don’t think I can fit, Ryles.”

“Please just try...”

Matt let out a light huff and helped her move over so that he can fit in beside her. They sat nestled up to one another quietly for quite a while. Rylee sighed happily and snuggled her face into the crook of his neck.

“You’ve given me the best gift I could ever receive. No amount of jewelry, flowers, or chocolate can top this. She’s the rainbow after our storm. She’s our saving grace,” she whispered.

Notes

Gosh it's been forever since i've written anything. I'm finally done with school. So i'll be finishing up this story. There is one more chapter left and a epilogue. Let me know what you think :)

P.S. a picture of Geneva is now in the character section.
