Don't Look

Heavenly Host

I slowly got up and looked around. The palms of my hands and my knees were scraped up and I had a pounding headache. It's so eerie here...where am I?

"Hello?" I called out. My lonely little voice bounced off the crimson stained walls.

I took in my surroundings and gasped a little. A classroom. But I was in a warehouse during the earthquake?

I walked towards the door and pushed it open. There were floorboards missing and the wallpaperwas peeling. Looking around, I noticed a little blue light. I slowly and catiously walked towards it and reached my hand out.

"I wouldn't do that!" An adolescent voice cried out.

I gasped and jumped back. "A spirit?!"

"Finally somebody who isn't a bumbling idiot! You are the first person to actually acknowledge what I am. How though?"

"I..really like to read up on this kinda stuff... Could you tell me where I am?" I asked. I was surprised at myself for taking this so well.

"You are in Heavenly Host Elementary School. You came here with, let's see, 9 others?" It asked and I made a face.

"More or less... Heavenly Host..? Isn't that the-"

"School shut down in the 70's due to the kidnapping and murder of 4 students? Yep. Lucky and unlucky for you, you aren't alone here."

"Really? The man told us we'd be paired together but I'm all alone." I looked down the hallway then back at the looming light in front of me.

"Well there is another human here. Not too far away as well. You should find them. You're better off with somebody to keep you sane."

I still couldn't place the voice. It was definitley a child, sounding about in the peak of their puberty, but the voice sounded both male and female. It'd be rude to ask anyways.

"Can you tell me where they are?" I asked and it sighed.

"I like you. Really. But I can't. I've only been here for so long,
you need to find them yourself."

"If I find them, then I can find everybody else?!" A small feeling of hope rose in my chest. When I read the article, there was supposedly no way out. But I don't believe that for a second.

"No. There is only one other person here."

"But you said 9 other people came here with me!" I cried out and put my hand against my forehead.

"It's hard to explain. They are here at the school but you can't see them." I knitted my eyebrows together. "You are in different dimensions to put it simply. And there's no way to cross them."

I sighed and covered my face.

"Giivve iiit baaackk" Another child's voice, definitley a younger one, echoed through the halls.

"What was that?" I asked frantically and the spirit laughed a little.

"Ooh you better run!" It said in a playful voice then vanished.

"What?!"

I turned back towards the second voice where giggling and the sound of somebody gurgling water in their mouth could be heard.

"Leet's plaay!" Said the voice again and I started to back away.

Two children rounded the corner and I immediately turned away from them and ran. I sprinted down the halls breathing heavily. I looked over my shoulder and couldn't see them anymore, but could still hear them very clearly, they were close behind.

When I looked in front of me again, I noticed the stairwell. I didn't stop in time though and tripped on the first step. Letting out a shrill scream, I flew down the stairs and landing face down on the floor.

Johnny's POV*

I groaned and pulled my body up. I felt like a had way too much to drink again. I looked around and winced. It smelled like rotting meat.

"Ugh.."

I walked around the room and looked carefully at the objects in it. I was in an infirmary. Why though?

I opened the door and stalked into the halls. There were children's shoes littering the floor and busted lockers barely hanging on the walls.

"What the fuck? HELLO?" I shouted and my voice echoed throughout the hallway.

I walked further but stopped when a heard a loud scream and a thud.

"Hello?! Where are you?" I yelled and towards the noise.

"Help! Please, somebody!"

I ran up the stairs and on the platform mid-way, was the red headed girl from earlier. She was on ground trying to get up. I grabbed her forearm and helped her up and she started to push me.

"We gotta get away from here." She said breathlessly and started limping down the stairs.

"What? Why?" I asked and pulled her arm around my neck and wrapped my arm around her waist, pulling the weight off of her leg.

"Giive iit baack!"

I looked over my shoulder but she yanked me towards her.

"Don't look at them, whatever you do!" She warned and I turned away.

I ran as fast as could with this girl be my side but she was obviously hurting and I didn't want to do any more damage. We passed through the hall and I opened the door to the infirmary, pulled her inside with me and shut the door.

She sat against the door and I held my hand against the top half of it and the door frame, putting all my weight on it. Soon, the banging on the door stopped and the voices faded away. I leaned down and picked the girl up. She was a bit taller than me but was practically a twig.

I put her down on the bed and looked around for some sort of wrap or tape or anything that might help her leg.

"What's your name?" I asked and she sat up and looked at me.

"I'm Jacqueline... you must be Johnny.." She said in a soft voice.

"Yeah.. What happened back there?" I pulled out some athlete's wrap and sat on the bed with her, carefully wrapping it around her knee.

"I was talking to this spirit when I heard the two little girls. I ran off and when I looked back to see if they were still there I fell down stairs and landed on my damn leg the wrong way." Jacqueline explained and rubbed right above her knee.

"Wow. You said you talked to a spirit? What did it say?"

She looked at me and sighed. She explained how we were the only ones here while the others where splayed out in the same school but different dimensions. She also told me about the school and when and why it was shut down.

"The article said there was no way out... but I'll be damned if I let some elementary school take me down." Jacqueline mumbled and I laughed a little.

"You know when I first saw you, I noticed how you were so quiet and taciturn. You seem to know what you're doing, and you are a lot more calm than I would expect you to be. How many schools do you get stuck in?" I joked and she smiled.

"Oh like 3 or 4 a month." She said sarcastically and we both started laughing. "You sure know how to make light of things. I am glad that I'm not stuck with somebody who's gonna bitch and moan the whole time."

"Yeah me too. You should probably get some rest, then we can try to find the others and get out of this place."

She nodded and laid down on the cot, shutting her eyes.

I didn't know what the hell was going to happen. I didn't know if we'd even make it out of here. But that doesn't mean we wouldn't try. Bring it on Heavenly Host. We're gonna kick your ass.
