(Love) Contract

Tara’s POV

I looked at Jimmy he was lounging outside in on one of the sunbed's and drank from his beer.
I had the other bottle in my hand sipping from time to time, then I turned around and tried to see Brian and Matt.
Would the situation escalate?
Or would they finally come clean about the situation…
And why did I not lose the feeling that Matt was innocent in all this?
What I heard just now made me think that Brian accused Matt of having something with Michelle while it never was the case…
Would that change anything for me?

“Don’t look like that… they won’t... you know rip each other’s throat out.” Jimmy’s voice interrupted my thoughts.
“Hmm…?” I looked back at him and he stood up stepping really close to me, only a few inches parting us.
“I know you are concerned, and I can totally read that face of yours… I think the same. Matt seemed not to know what happened and seemed innocent, let them clear that, they are two adults, they will come to terms, and a black eye or bleeding lip never hurt anyone that bad.”
Does he want to soothe me with saying something like that? That didn’t really help.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you, I was joking.” Jimmy took the beer from my hand and held it up against the light, seeming satisfied and handed me his beer back.

“What was that about?” I asked him frowning.
He grinned, “Mine is nearly empty…” He grinned even wider and I rolled my eyes.
“So.. your sister… can you tell me something about her?”Jimmy asked suddenly and took another drink from MY beer.
“Well.. why would I do that?” I grinned back and Jimmy sat down on the sunbed patting the spot next to him.
“Because… I might have left her a little confused. What do you think how long should I wait until I call her?” He asked and I had to laugh.
“Confused huh?” I smiled, thinking that Jimmy would totally be the right man to unravel the strictly planned life of my sister, and would be a total opposite to all the boyfriend she had before.
“She is not someone for just a one night stand, Jimmy. So if you are up to that, find someone else.”
“Not planning on that” He said seriously and I lifted my eyebrow.
“Really?”
“Yeah, you know I could need a good lawyer on speed-dial… for more than just a onetime thing.” Jimmy winked at me and I laughed loudly.
“You are bad” He grinned again “Another of my many – and I am not exaggerating now – good traits. Tell her something good about me when she asks, will you?” Jimmy asked with a huge smile and how could you say no to this guy.

“I will think about it.” I told him with a chuckle and he looked satisfied for now.
Suddenly the ringing of my phone broke the comfortable silence and my heart sped up.
“Who is it?” Jimmy asked and I pulled the phone out, looking at the screen.
“John… my ex.” I breathed deeply in and out and didn’t have another chance now then to pick up and hear the voice that nearly ruined my life.

Matt’s POV

“No, she didn’t actually say that, but there was another event… that made me… well aware of the fact, that there could be or must be something going on between the two of you.” Brian said and looked at me with a sad expression on his face.

“What event? Damn it, Brian spill it.” I said and my patience finally ran out.
“Alright, tell me… on the day of my break up with Michelle, she stormed out of my house. She just crushed my freaking heart under the heels of her clicking shoes. I watched her walking out of the door, watched her walking down my driveway, when a familiar car pulled into my drive way – yours. Picking her up… she went into your car, you guys hugged, damn it I saw it Matt… but I felt paralyzed, couldn’t run out there. I thought about it, but it hurt… it had hurt too much.” Brian said and I saw his desperate expression.
“On the day of your break up? What? No.. that was not-” I thought about the last time I picked Michelle up and what was behind that, but not that.. never that.

I was at Val’s picking up my last items that were left after our break up, she had already packed everything into a few boxes.
I had dreaded this moment, it felt weird seeing her again after a few months of not seeing her at all and then to make it all final.
I packed all the stuff into my car, Val standing at the door waving a final time at me, we weren’t on bad conditions, but it felt weird.
I waved back and sat in my car, Val disappeared into her apartment and I sighed heavily leaning my head on the steering wheel.
Harder than I thought…

My phone rang and I saw Chelle’s smiling face on the screen.
I debated picking up or not, but I already tried to distance myself enough, feeling guilty about it so I took the call hearing her sob made me alert immediately.
“Matt?” I heard her small voice.
“Yes? Michelle what’s going on? What happened?” She sighed and I wondered what’s going on.
“Matt, can you pick me up. Brian and I had a fight, I don’t have my car here… I don’t want to bother you, but I… didn’t know who to call.” Michelle rushed out and I started my car, Brian wasn’t living far from Val, so it wouldn’t really be a detour for me. I could bring her home and be at my home in no time.
“Why did you fight this time?” I asked and drove already into the direction of Brian's home.
“I will tell you later.” She hung up.

Only a few minutes later I arrived at Brian’s house, Michelle was already walking outside towards my car, she looked sad and climbed into the passenger seat, she looked into the back seats and frowned at me.
“You were at Val’s? Picking up your stuff?” She had asked me and I nodded silently.
“I’m sorry, Matt.” She hugged me and I let her, it felt good having a friend now, someone caring for you.
“Thank you. Come on let’s bring you home and you can tell me what happened with Brian. I bet you can fix it in no time, you always do. You two are meant to be.” I pulled away and looked at her, she looked even sadder now and turned towards the window, not speaking to me again for that day.

“That’s what happened?” Brian asked and I looked at him with a nod.
“Yeah, that’s what happened.” I told him and couldn’t believe that, that was the day they actually broke up and she didn’t tell me… she fooled me.
“I’m sorry Matt. I thought… I just saw…” Brian looked ashamed and I stood up walking towards him.
“I really can’t believe that you could think I would do something like that to you. Brian, I am one of your best friend. I love you like a brother, I would never… in a million years do something like that to you.” I told him and he nodded, his face buried in his hands.
“I should have known… I just… fuck I was so hurt… and lost in my pain that I didn’t want to hear anything else…” Brian got up as well and looked at me straight.
“I should have never thought that, Matt. I am really sorry, I don’t know how to make it up to you…”
I felt hurt by his assumptions but I was glad that we could talk about it, that we cleared the situation.

“I could think about something on how you could make it up to me…” I told him with a smirk and looked outside, seeing Tara pulling her phone out.
“NO… no way.” Brian looked at me shocked and I chuckled.
“Too early for these kind of jokes, huh?” I asked him but still felt sad about losing the opportunity to have more with Tara, she was special… but I got that she and Brian really had more than just the attraction going on, so of course I would stay true to my word and back off.
“The time for these kind of jokes will never arrive, my friend.” Brian made a step towards me and hugged me clapping my back.
“Sorry, man. I should have known better.” He said and I nodded.
