(Love) Contract

Matt’s POV

“… because it was - You.” I could hear Brian’s words and I saw him glaring at me but I couldn’t process what he was telling me.
“I was… what?” I asked him not knowing what he was talking about now.
What does he mean me?
Was he changing the topic again?

“What Brian is trying to tell you is that Michelle broke up with him, because she fell in love with you Matt. And now we want to hear from you, if you knew it… What happened between you and how you feel about it? You can imagine that Brian wasn’t really thrilled to get this little info from Michelle.” Jimmy clarified and I shifted my eyes to him.
“I didn’t know.” That’s what first came to my mind. “I really didn’t know.”
Brian sighed and I didn’t really know if it was in relief or disbelief.
“She fell in love with me? Are you serious? I mean… I would have noticed that, right? We spent much time together… during the tour and well on parties, don’t you think I would have noticed that?” I asked into the room but the three people standing opposite of me didn’t reply, which was answer enough for me.

“What do you mean? I wouldn’t have noticed or do you think she lied?” I asked again and Brian looked away while Jimmy shrugged his shoulders.
“Matt, can you tell us if you didn’t notice anything… well… weird about her, if you try to remember the last encounter with her? Did she not mention something? Maybe something about Brian? You said you saw her after the break up?” Tara asked and I looked at her.
“No, I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. I honestly…” I thought back to our last tour where Michelle was with us.

“Yo Brian, you wanna go swimming?” I looked into the tour bus and saw him sitting at the table with his guitar in hand, writing down notes.
“Nah, I gotta finish this, need to get it out of my head first.” Brian replied and I nodded.
“Alright, if you change your mind, we will head over in about 20.” I told him and moved down the stairs nearly bumping into Michelle.
She took her sunglasses of and smiled at me, it was weird looking at her, she was Val’s twin sister, so of course she reminded me of my ex-girlfriend which was pretty hard in the beginning but it would get better. Michelle and I had always been friends so I smiled at her tried to handle her as I always did, as a friend and even though the small sting in my heart made me aware that the break up with Val wasn’t that long ago I ignored it.

“Hey Matty.” She smiled and I smiled back at her.
“Hey Chelle, Brian is in the bus. Being creative…” I told her and thought she would want to know where her boyfriend was.
“Oh yeah, I know… I left him there. I heard you said something about swimming?” She asked and I nodded, jumping down the last step of the bus.
“Yeah, right. Me, the Berry’s, Jimmy and Johnny wanted to head to the swimming center.”I said and she stopped me with a hand to my arm.
“How about I come along?” She asked and sounded seductive but I had ignored the fact thinking it interpreted it wrong.
“Brian doesn’t want to come along. I asked him already, so…” I said and she nodded.
“I know, heard that as well, but I would like to go with you.” Her hand softly stroked my arm and I made a step back.
“Yo Matt? Can you come over for a second?” Jason yelled over to me and I nodded in his direction.
“Sure, come along, why not… be ready in 20.” I told her with a smile and then excused myself.

In the end I had to cancel the swimming part, because we had a problem with the technician at the concert hall we had been playing and I sat with Jason the whole afternoon together discussion our possibilities...

Now, thinking about it… she was mad at me the next day, for not telling her I wouldn’t come along. She had been swimming with Johnny, Matt Berry, Zack and Jimmy but she told me that that wasn’t what she wanted, shit… now I got her meaning.

“Matt? Hello?” Jimmy waved a hand in front of my face and I snapped out of my thoughts.

Brian’s POV

I knew Matt was thinking about something that happened in the past but he didn’t want to share it.
Was it really true that he didn’t know Michelle wanted something from him or was he trying to hide something?
“Jimmy? Tara? Can you leave for a second?” I asked and saw Jimmy and Tara turn towards me both not looking convinced.
“Please, Matt and I need to have this talk… alone. You know it took me way too long already to finally have this conversation, let us clear it, but just between us.”I said and Tara nodded.
She walked towards me and kissed my lips then tiptoed and whispered in my ear
“Let him speak, too. He might be innocent in this, Brian.”

I nodded, sadly I didn’t know if I could agree with her, it was still hard for me.
I had to talk to him now and had to clear this, if she was right or not would come out… right now.
“Alright, but no fist fight, before I arrive. Call us if something gets out of hand, so I can at least grab my phone and record everything.” Jimmy smirked and I rolled my eyes at him.
“Fuck off.” I said and Matt also flipped him off.
Jimmy laid his arm around Tara’s waist and moved towards the kitchen, I heard the fridge open and two bottles clicking then I saw them disappear through the door to my terrace.

I turned towards Matt and thought this was really stupid standing here before each other so I motioned to the couch.
Matt took my meaning and sat down in the chair and I sat in the middle of my couch.
“I know you remember some moments, I saw it on your face. Be honest with me now Matt.” I said and looked at him straight.
“Yes, I did. But honestly Brian… between me and Michelle never happened anything, I can’t believe that you could even think that I would do something like that to you. I saw in what bad shape you were after Michelle and your break up, but Brian I never knew it had anything to do with me. I promise you, Michelle never told me she had feelings for me, I never touched her in any way. I always treated her as a friend and nothing more.”Matt said and I believed him
“I believe you, really I wanted to believe you. She never made a move towards you?” I asked curious now.
“I remembered a thing… but honestly in that moment it seemed harmless, but now knowing that she might have feelings for me… I didn’t know that, why didn’t you tell me Brian?” Matt looked at me and I had to sigh.

“It wasn’t the best feeling in the world to know your girlfriend, the woman that I loved more than anything, fell in love with my best friend. That she doesn’t want to be with me anymore, that she just spent time with me in the end to be near you, Matt. She rather wanted to be in your presence, but I didn’t know that at the time… I was as clueless as everybody else… the last tour, she came with us, I was so surprised that she wanted to join, because we were distanced before… but that… now it made sense, she didn’t came because of me… she came for you.” I said and let it all out now.
I saw Matt frown and then shook his head.
“God that’s so fucked up.”He closed his eyes, and then his eyes snapped open suddenly.
“But wait a second, you thought me and Michelle had something going on? And don’t try to deny it… how could you think that? Only because she told you she fell for me?What in hell made you think that I would betray you? My best freaking friend?” Matt asked me and I felt a little guilty and ashamed, but now I had to get everything out, all of it…
“Or did she say something to you? Did she tell you that I had something with her? That’s not true. I just told you I never touched her… To be honest it was really hard for me in the beginning to only be around her… I know we never talked about this fact, but… damn seeing Michelle reminded me so much about Val and my break up that I tried to keep my distance, but then… I thought I was being a bad friend if I would shut myself away, because she was your girl and we were spending a lot of time together.” Matt said and made me a little speechless, damn we really had been bad friends for each other in the past… why didn’t we talk about all this… everything could have been way easier and solved earlier if we would have talked about it…
