(Love) Contract

Brian’s POV

I looked at Jimmy and Matt sitting on my couch. Shit, Jimmy really knew it all.. but that wouldn’t make a difference anymore.
Tara and I talked, we were clear on this, we had feelings for each other, so it doesn’t have anything to do with the contract anymore.
It was us, falling in love… no being in love.
But… what was going on with Matt?

“Alright, guys. Can we please clear this situation now, for real?” Jimmy got up and I heard a door close behind me.
I turned around and saw Tara, she had red cheeks looking down on her feet. I knew she was embarrassed that Jimmy and Matt walked in on us…
“Babe, come here.” I held my arm out and she came walking towards me without any hesitation.
I grinned, damn how good does this feel, her by my side, knowing she wanted to be with me - not him.

My eyes wandered towards Matt and I felt a little guilty, not because Tara was mine, but because he still was one of my best friends.
I never liked seeing any of my friends hurting and the look on Matt’s face was telling me he definitely had felt better then right now.
“Hey Tara.” Jimmy said and she nodded at him but she didn’t look at Matt, she must feel guilty as well but for a different reason.
She told me she liked Matt and that they slept together meant also that there was something between them, maybe only lust but that was enough to make her feel uncomfortable and guilty now.
I didn’t like that, but had no chance to help the situation, I tried to be calm because me throwing a fit wouldn’t help anyone right now.

“So Matt said you had another problem beside the one, that might be solved by destiny itself, right?” Jimmy asked and looked from Matt to me and I felt Tara leaning back and then looking at me confused.
“He knows everything, about the contract, about us… everything.” I told Tara and she turned towards Jimmy with wide eyes.
“I talked to your sister, she told me everything, because she was concerned.” Jimmy said and had a reassuring smile on his face.
“Oh okay, I guess.” Tara whispered and I saw Matt getting up from the couch, he made a step towards us and I felt my hands get a tighter hold around Tara, even if I didn’t meant to, I couldn’t help it. I just couldn’t…
“I’m not going to steal her away, Brian. How can you even think that? What did I do to you to be so… distrustful? I am your best friend, I would freaking do anything for you. What happened Brian?” Matt sounded desperate and I got the feeling he either really didn’t know what happened or he had no sense of right and wrong.

“You don’t know?” I asked again. “You really don’t know? Or are you still playing dumb?” I asked and felt Tara elbowing me in the side and Jimmy sigh and also get up from the couch.
“Fine, let’s start this discussion, which is more than just a few years overdue, now. Brian tell him why you are pissed, tell him what happened!”
I growled at Jimmy, knowing he was right, that this whole talk was overdue but how could I talk to Matt about this, how could I look him in the eye and hear him say that he didn’t care that she was the love of my life, how?
“Brian, he deserves to know. Just say it, you will feel better. I promise” Tara touched my cheek and I looked into her eyes, leaning down giving her a small kiss.
“Alright, listen Matt… do you remember when Chelle and I broke up? Do you remember the actual day?” I asked him and Matt looked at me, he looked confused, his brows drawn together thinking deeply.

Matt’s POV

“No, I mean… I don’t really remember which day. I think it was Jimmy who told me you wouldn’t come to our meeting. You wouldn’t feel too well. I had some concert dates to organize…” I tried to remember exactly what he meant, but I couldn’t come up with the actual day or how I realized his long-term relationship ended.
Was he mad because I didn’t pay enough attention to him? Wasn’t there for him when it ended?

“Brian, tell him.” Jimmy urged on and I felt really stupid, since everybody in the room seemed to know what was going on but me.
“Fuck, alright. We haven’t talked directly after the break-up, do you remember. I haven’t been to any dates we made… I didn’t come… there was a reason for that. You know I loved Michelle, right?” Brian asked and I nodded.
“Yeah, of course. But you never talked to me about it. I never knew this had anything to do with… me?” I asked confused and he pulled something from his pants, holding it in his fist.
The stretched his arm towards me and held his hand open “I planned on asking her to marry me.” Brian said and I gasped, seeing the engagement ring in his open palm.
“Shit… you never mentioned that.”
“I know.” Brian looked away, then pulled his hand back and stuffed the ring back in his pocket.
“It never happened. I mean I didn’t get the chance… because she broke up with me before or actually on the day, I planned it to happen. So you don’t know the reason for the break up?” Brian asked and I frowned.
I did know what was told later on, but I was surprised hearing she broke up.

“I.. no.. actually. I did hear something but that’s different to what you just said and since you never mentioned anything or when someone made the slightest hint about it, you left or got drunk… so I kind of let it go… wasn’t right from my side I can see that now.” I told him and Brian frowned.
“What did you hear?” He asked me and I saw Tara’s hand rub at Brian’s back in comfort.
“I heard well.. what Michelle told me later on.” Brian’s eyes widened and then narrowed and he pointed a finger at me.
“I KNEW IT! SEE I TOLD YOU!” He yelled suddenly and Jimmy sighed loudly.
“That doesn’t mean anything, let him finish.”
“What? FINISH FREAKING WHAT?! I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT JAMES! I DON’T!” Brian kept on yelling and began to gesture with his hands wildly, pushing Tara away in the progress and Tara made a step away from him, I could see she was a little shocked and Brian must have seen the same.

“Sorry, Tara… I didn’t mean to.. I just…” He breathed deeply in and out.
“What did she say?” Jimmy asked me and I was even more confused.
“Well, she told me something like it was a break-up agreed on both sides… that the love just wasn’t there anymore like in the beginning and since the whole tour stress and being gone for so long doesn’t help, she wanted to… kind of set you free?” I tried to remember her exact words but that was at least the meaning, sadly I knew these words too well, since Val and I also broke up for these kind of reasons too…
Did Michelle know that?
Of course she did, Val was her sister… she lied to me?
But why would she lie?
What was behind all this?
“Nice, that is just too freaking nice of her. But that wasn’t the real reason Matt!” Brian said and roused me from my thoughts.
“I guessed that much now… but what was the reason and why did she lie to me?” I asked confused and Brian had a smile on his face, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes, which doesn’t mean anything good as I knew too well.
“She broke up with me, because she fell in love with someone else… and not just shortly, she had been in love with him for quite a while…” Brian said and I frowned even more.
“WHAT? Really?” I asked and I had seen Michelle after the break up but she never mentioned anything like that.
“Yeah, can you guess who that someone was, Matt?” Brian asked and I shook my head.
“No, how could I…” I shrugged my shoulders.
“Yes, you could… because it was - You.”
