(Love) Contract

Tara’s POV

I knew Brian was hurting, he tried to understand everything I told him and I knew he didn’t want to show that he was hurt by my action, but I saw it in his eyes.
I didn’t mean to do that.
I told him before, that Matt and I… that we… I turned to see Matt standing uncertain in the middle of the room, it would have been better if I talked to Brian alone, just him and me but it was too late for that now.

“Brian? Did you hear me?” He nodded, my palm still on his cheek.
“Doesn’t matter.. I mean.. we are not really a couple, so…” He tried to shrug and looked away, I let my hand fall from his face and sighed.
“So why are you telling me all this?” He took a step back, creating more distance between us.
“The kiss… my ex he saw it.” I told him and Brian’s eyes snapped up.
“He was near you?”
“I didn’t know… we thought we were alone. I thought he was still in Portland, just trying to call me and get me on the phone. You heard him before, he didn’t mention anything else to you, did he?” I asked him and Brian stepped forward again, not able to keep the distance apparently.
“No, he didn’t.” Brian seemed to think about it.
“He did say in the messages I listened to that he would find you… or well he would get to you. I don’t remember correctly, but I never thought he would actually come after you.”
“Anyway, he said to me-” Matt announced and we turned around to face him.
“-he said he wants to speak to you next. He is thinking like the media and everybody else, that you and Tara are the ultimate couple, well like we wanted them to think. But if he doesn’t get what he wants, he will tell YOU, that he saw us making out. And if that isn’t enough, he will want to go to the press.” Matt finished and Brian closed his eyes.
“Let him tell me, I mean… I don’t care.” Brian said and I felt a little pain in my chest, was he really not caring, or was he just saying that?
I averted my eyes, to not let him see that his words hurt me.

“But you should care, she is… and that’s what he and everybody else thinks - your girlfriend.” Matt clarified.
“I know that. But how do you want me to react if he really calls? Should I throw a fit? Should I tell him he is lying? What should I do? What does he want from us, even if we would react?” Brian sounded pissed now and looked at Matt.
“Damn, I don’t know. That’s what we need to figure out.” Matt answered and made a step forward.
“He didn’t say what he really wanted, he wanted to think about it and wanted to talk to you next. I don’t know if he will reveal the information he has then, but… we should have talked about it, that’s what I thought.” Matt tried a little calmer and I was glad that he was trying to soothe the situation.
“Tara, can I speak to you for a second alone.” Brian said suddenly and grabbed my hand.

Before Matt or I could react, he pulled me away from the living room and into a guest room at the end of the corridor.
I frowned at him not really sure how to react.
He sat me down on the edge of the bed and paced before me. I kept quiet he was looking more than ready to explode, he hadn’t been showing that when we were still talking to Matt. There he had looked well… uninterested.
And this disinterest from his side was squeezing my heart painfully, making me aware on just how close we have been during this couple of days and even weeks.
How much he came to mean to me, but apparently it wasn’t the same for him.

Jimmy’s POV

“That’s it?” I asked Cara astonished. “You finish this story with that’s it… that’s freaking it?”
I couldn’t believe my ears, this was… I mean… how could they…
Do they really think that was the way out?
That was a good idea?

I pulled my phone out, trying Brian’s phone but he didn’t pick up.
Next I dialed Matt.
“What?” I heard him bark.
“Where are you? We need to talk!” I said without wasting any more time.
“At Brian’s but we have a situation here, so can we talk tomorrow.” Matt sounded stressed and no wonder after the things I heard that were going on.
“No, that’s perfect.” I hung up and looked at Cara a final time.

“You think that… your sister… is honest with him?” I asked and she smiled a little sadly.
“I think so, I just don’t know if they are good for each other in that combination. But Jimmy, I said all this to you, because I want my sister to be… happy. Not to make it even worse for her.” I nodded.
“I know. They are my family, I will talk to them. We will find a way… but let me tell you something, Brian would never hurt her, I haven’t seen him… like that with a woman in a long time. That means something.” I said and it was the truth, since Michelle he hadn’t even had the slightest interest in a woman, but Tara seemed to have triggered the interest again.
“Why would you think the combination is wrong?” I asked her and she looked away.
“I don’t know much about her last relationship… she doesn’t really talk about it but it didn’t end well. He was… not good to her, Jimmy. He took drugs, he… well he was a waste of her time. Don’t be offended but I met Brian, he was here after he brought my sister into a compromising situation, when he drank too much. And I know it happened again during this tour, with something else… She had been through all this… I don’t want her to get into the same situation again.”
I was about to get pissed at her saying Brian was a bad guy, he wasn’t. He just… he needed help, he wasn’t himself when he did that.
He was… well… lost.

Through lyrics was the only way he sometimes talked to me about it, these were his… They just sprang up in my mind…
He needed someone to catch him and I thought, Tara could or would be that someone.
But… does she really want to?

I knew something had been going on between Tara and Matt, since the moment I have seen them together, was it just the boss and employee thing?
Or was there more?
Does Brian know?
Did he care?

He did care if he wanted to or not, I have seen him react when I told him Tara was driving with Matt.
It was a test and he failed miserably…
And I thought he would open up to me then, thought he would share his thoughts, but he backed off… Like most of the times… but now I knew what was going on, couldn’t understand how could he agree to something like that?
Agree to a “Love Contract” and worse of it all… it found him… love - he just might not have realized it yet… and if - was it too late to be changed?
“He had a hard time, but he would never hurt her, that’s all I can tell you. I will go and check out the situation. I will tell you what’s going on.” I said and walked towards her and did something I wanted to do, since I stepped one foot into her apartment.
I laid my hands on her cheeks and captured her lips with mine.
She gasped and I took the chance to intensify the kiss, letting my tongue explore her mouth, when I pulled away we were both out of breathe and she stared a little confused at me and I left without another word.
I had a smile on my face, I never kissed a lawyer before…
