Until We Meet Again

Chapter 1 - Seize the day

It was 7 in the morning. With a bad hangover, Juliette decided to wake up. “fuck work” she thought. She worked in a little café in Brooklyn, called The Perfect Cup. She liked it, there were lots of plants inside and Tunisian carpets, giving the little café a cozy, gypsy vibe.
She got up, took a long and hot shower, and dressed up in her usual outfit. Black jeans, black crop top, black loose knitted cardigan and one pair of her many Doc Marten’s. She grabbed a granola bar, took her backpack and her keys, and got out of her loft. It was pretty small, a little kitchen, a bathroom and an open area where she had her bed, and what could stand for a living room.
It was spring and as soon as she went outside, Juliette smelled the appeasing perfume of blossoming flowers. She took the subway from Upper Manhattan, to the café. “I should consider moving closer to my job …” She said to herself. But even if it took her on hour to get to work, she really liked her loft.
She put her earplugs on, played some Neil Young and started nodding to her music, while waiting for the subway to come. Music was her life, besides modelling which was her dream since forever, but she was only starting in the business and she didn’t have any important contracts yet.
“Avenged Sevenfold, City of Evil Tour, Madison Square Garden”. Juliette looked at the poster in the train wagon and sighed. She could finally meet Brian after all those years away from Huntington Beach.

***
“Juliette, Brian is on the phone” Her dad yelled. “Can you go out of your room and take the god damn telephone for once?
It was during the summer of 1997. Juliette was born and raised in Huntington Beach. She wasn’t the prettiest girl around. Tall for her age and also really skinny. She was also awkward and shy, and that’s why she only had two friends, Brian since elementary school, and Jimmy, who came along with Brian, like a package deal. When you saw one of these three alone, you knew that the other were never far behind.
With a big groan, Juliette got up and picked up the telephone.
“Hey…” she said.
“Hey Jules, wanna come over to my place, I have a surprise for you.”
“When do you want me to be there?” She asked.
“Well I don’t know man, just be there soon okay?”
“Okay.” She smiled to the telephone before ending the conversation.
She didn’t even bother to make herself decent for Brian, he was her best friend after all, and he had seen her in every way possible. In tears because her boyfriend had dumped her, in pain when she broke her arm, drunk as hell when she tried alcohol for the first time. And neither to say, she also had seen Brian all the way through.
When she arrived to Brian’s House, he was sitting on his porch, smoking and reading something.
“Hey fucker, what’s your book about?” Juliette said, with a grin on her face.
“Woah, don’t consider asking me how I am today, or what I ate for breakfast.” He said, sarcastically.
“Hehe, you know I’m kidding right Bri? But your book seems really interesting - ”
“More interesting than me?” He cut her out, pouting.
Juliette walked towards Brian as he was standing up and fell in his arms.
“I’m gonna miss you so much” She whispered.
“It will be okay” Brian said, trying not to cry. “You’re going to make friends there and soon, you’re going to forget us.”
Juliette moved backwards, tears rushing down her face.
“Don’t say that” she said. “You know that you and Jimmy are my only friends, and it will always be that way. I won’t give up on you guys, and one day we will be back together again.”
“I’m sorry Jules, I didn’t mean it that way, Jimmy and I are really sad that you are leaving and it’s gonna be empty and cold without you here, but what I wanted to say is that you don’t have to be sad. New-York is a wonderful city and you shouldn’t waste your future by looking back in the past. Now, let’s not talk about this anymore and let me show you the surprise before Jimmy arrives.”
***
“Juliette? Are you listening?” her boss, Amanda said.
“Sorry Amanda, I was in my own thoughts. I’m really stressed and tired”
“It’s okay, don’t worry, we all have times like that. I was just saying that your shift is done.”
Juliette checked her watch. 4:30 pm. In less than 4 hours, she would be able to see him ...
