Life's a Game, but it's Not Fair

Five

Reagan wanted nothing more than to sleep the day away. Unfortunately, Jimmy’s snores woke her up at 12:30.

After tossing and turning for half an hour she kicked the bottom of his mattress and got up. He snorted and rolled over, but didn’t wake up. Reagan rolled her eyes as she padded out of the room.

It was still early for the Avenged house, especially since last night. Walking into the kitchen, she saw that even Kappie’s door was shut. She crossed the massive kitchen and placed a hand on the cool handle of the steel refrigerator.

She grabbed some eggs and turned on the stove to cook them. Running to the other side of the kitchen, she placed some bread in the toaster. Opening the fridge again to inspect its contents, she chose ingredients to make herself a breakfast sandwich.

The smell of food roused Matt from his sleep. He glanced at his clock to see that it was 1 in the afternoon, early for anyone to be awake especially after last night’s events. Rolling out of his bed, he threw on a black sleeveless shirt and headed downstairs.

He expected Kappie to be awake early as always, but was surprised to find Reagan, in a pair of boy shorts and a tank top, running around the kitchen. He never had really noticed how good of a body she had until now. Almost as soon as the thought entered his mind he scolded himself. She was his boss’s daughter, that couldn’t happen. Ever.

“You’re up early.” A voice from behind Reagan startled her, making her jump and turn around to see Matt leaning against the entrance of the kitchen watching her. “Jimmy kept me up,” she explained, turning back to her eggs.

“Whatcha making?” he asked her, sitting at the breakfast bar.

“Egg sandwich.” She responded, flipping the eggs expertly. “Want one?” Matt nodded, “If you wouldn’t mind.” She told him she had no problem and asked what he wanted on it, “whatever you’re making for yourself.” He told her.

After frying the eggs, Reagan threw them onto two toasted slices of bread along with bacon, avocado, tomato and a little bit of salt. She tossed one on a plate for Matt and passed it to him.

Matt took a bite and groaned “damn, marry me now. This is amazing.” Reagan laughed, and ate hers. “So do you guys know who was following me?” she asked between bites.
Matt wiped the crumbs from his hands and stood to put his plate in the sink. “Jimmy got the plate from the Berrys. I guess we’ll see what he can find. Your dad’s going to talk to you about it later.” Reagan nodded and went back to her food.

“We smell eggs.” Looking up, her father and Zacky entered the kitchen, rubbing their eyes. “Make your own.” She retorted, taking her last bite.

“How come Shads gets food made for him?” Zacky whined.

“Right place at the right time.” Reagan replied, “Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get a shower.”

“Meeting in my office at 3.” Brian told her as she walked past him “everyone is expected there. Both she and the guys nodded and Reagan headed for the stairs.

“Alright.” Brian placed his hands on his desk and looked to his friends, his daughter and Kappie. “I’ll be frank when I say that last night scared the living shit out of all of us. I believe we need to all be updated on what is going on.”

Looking at his tech expert, “What did you get on the plate Jim?”

Jimmy passed Brian a file. “The plate is registered to an Andrew Reid,” he began as Brian leafed through the file. “It’s interesting thought, this guy is totally clean. Graduated from Lehigh, has a good job and is married to a girl he started dating after he graduated high school. I think his car may have been stolen.”

Brian placed the file down and looked everyone in the eye.

“This is hard for me to say,” he said slowly. “But as you know I’ve had Tuck and some from our other allies keeping an eye out, as we have done for them for the past few years.” He took a deep breath “it appears that Joel Madden was seen in Huntington last week. At first I didn’t think that it was totally true. I thought perhaps Tuck had overreacted, but with last nights events I think it may be true.”

“That fucker thinks he can just walk into our territory?” Zacky snarled.

“He’s asking for a death sentence,” Johnny added

Reagan sat quietly, she knew Avenged and Good Charlotte were enemies, but she still didn’t know the whole story. She had a feeling this rival gang wanted to hurt her father by using her.

“For now,” Brian began again, “we are increasing security. Kappie will not be home alone and Reagan, I’m sorry but you will need one of us to accompany you for a little while.” She nodded.

“Christ, I want you and Vengeance to check out this Reid guy’s house, see if he is in fact working for anyone or if Jimmy’s assumption is correct.” Both men nodded and left the office.

Brian scuffled through some papers on his desk and cursed “I must have left the files Tuck sent me in my office at Pulse.”

“I can get them for you Daddy,” Reagan offered. “If someone will take me.”

Matt stood “I will,” he said “I need to get out for a bit anyway.”

Brian thought for a moment, then nodded “Alright, but wear a hat and your sunglasses.” He told her.

Reagan went back to her room to put on an actual outfit. After changing into her shorts and tank top, she pulled one of her hats onto her head.

Matt was waiting for her outside in his black Mustang. He hit the gas as soon as she closed her door.

He pulled in front of Pulse, one of Avenged’s nightclubs around opening time. The two were automatically let in. “Hello Miss Haner, Master Shadows.” One of the mangers said, running over to them. “Anything I can help you with tonight?”

Reagan flashed her white smile “Just need to get papers from Master Gates’ office.” She explained. The two headed through the large throng of bodies. “Hey hottie, dance your pretty ass on over here.” A college guy yelled at her. Reagan rolled her eyes, flipped him off and kept walking to the stairwell.

She climbed the stairs, Matt at her heels. Taking the golden key out of her purse, she unlocked the black door that bore her father’s name and stepped inside.

“Matt if you want to bring the car to the side exit I can grab these files and I’ll just slide out that way.” She said heading over to the desk “You sure?” he asked, she nodded and slowly began to go through the papers.

She was pulling the files out from under a mound of paper work when she heard footsteps on the stairs. Expecting Matt she looked up, and mentally cursed when she saw the blonde guy she had flipped off downstairs.

“Owner’s girl huh?” He asked, his breath reeking of alcohol. Reagan forced her heart to slow down. This kid was just drunk, he was harmless. For now.

“Yup.” She said simply and headed to walk past him “now if you’ll excuse me-“ he blocked her exit with his arm. Shit.

“You know.” He said, hooking his arm around her waist. “I was raised to respect people, and that little stunt back there was very disrespectful. I didn’t like it. Not. One. Bit.” He backed her into the wall, “I think you need a lesson in manners missy.” Reagan struggled against him, panic starting to set in.

The kid’s hand inched toward her shirt, protected by her crossed arms gripping the files, but was soon ripped away and pinned behind his back. He gave a sharp cry as he was dragged off of Reagan and thrown on the wall next to her.

“I was raised to never lay a hand on a woman,” Matt snarled at him, pulling his arm up as the kid yelled in pain “no matter how much they don’t give you want you want.” He twisted the kid’s arm a bit more, forcing him to lie on the ground and beg for mercy. “If I see you here again I will fucking cut a limb off of you do you understand me big guy?” the kid nodded, tears in his eyes. Matt let him go and the two watched as he sprinted down the stairs.

Matt grabbed Reagan’s hand and dragged her outside. She threw the files on the ground and suddenly gasped for breath.

Matt rubbed her back, letting her get some air. “You alright?” he asked gently.

Maybe it was the stress from last night and now today, maybe it was because she was exhausted and lacking sleep or maybe it was the anxiety attack.

Reagan looked Matt in the eyes, threw her arms around him and kissed him right on the mouth.

Matt froze. Then, for no reason at all, kissed her back.

The kiss lasted barely a minute before the two snapped out of it. “I’m fine thank you for helping me.” Reagan muttered quickly, picking the files up off of the ground.

“Yup no problem.” Matt said running a hand through his buzz cut. “Let’s get home.” Reagan nodded and the two headed back. Silently, they agreed not to tell anyone about what had happened.

Later that night Reagan sat on her window seat staring outside. Her lips were on fire. Her head screamed at her for being so careless and stupid, but in her heart she knew she wanted to do it again.

Tonight Matt was the one sitting at the breakfast bar late at night, cradling a beer. He felt guilty as hell for kissing Reagan back, but at the same time he had enjoyed it. Deciding he wanted sleep, he headed upstairs.

He passed Reagan’s room on his way. His lips burned at the thought of her and he froze outside his own door. Gates may be her father, he thought to himself, but deep down he knew he wanted to kiss her again
