Misery Loves Company

Punk'd

Bethany Walker
It didn’t take me long to change into my bathing suit, get dressed, and walk over to Emily’s since she only lived a few houses away from me.

I walked up from the sidewalk, down the path and onto her front porch where we used to play cards all the time when we were younger.

I knew Emily since we were in the fourth grade, but we met the others throughout middle school. Honestly, if it weren’t for me, none of these girls would be friends. Not only did I introduce everyone, but I am the one who calms all of the arguing, the bickering and am practically the glue of our relationship with each other.

I couldn’t remember the amount of times Nicole and Andrea almost got into fights before, but with a simple reassurance from me that friendship is more important than any boy, all was forgiven…give or take a few days.

“Bethany, wait!” I heard someone shout as I was about to ring the door bell.

I spun around, surprised to see Rebecca and her wild red hair jumping off her bike before she barely stopped to throw it to the ground and came running towards me.

“What’s going on?” I asked as she skipped a few of the steps from the porch to the front door.

“They didn’t tell you either?” She asked with wild eyes.

I gave her a confused look. “Tell me what?”

“Nicole! Apparently she’s on drugs and we’re here to give her an intervention!” She threw her hands up as if she had no idea.

I tried not to smile and hold in a laugh. Already I knew what really happened. “Becca, there is nothing to worry about. Nicole is fine.”

“Then what’s going on? Andrea called me and said…” Her worried expression first turned into realization, and then into anger. “I’m going to kill her.”

I couldn’t hold back anymore and had to laugh. “Girl, you’ve just been Andrea’d.” Which was the equivalent to you’ve just been punk’d.

She growled and threw her hands down in frustration. “I can’t believe I fell for her crap!”

“Again,” I threw in with a giggle.

She smirked before reaching over, about to ring the door bell. “I’m going to give that girl a piece of my mind.”

That’s when Brian’s black SUV pulled up behind Matt’s pickup in the driveway, getting both of our attention on them and away from Andrea’s shenanigans.

“The boys are here,” I sang, seeing Johnny and his mohawk hanging out the backseat window from the other side.

“Oh, god. What are they doing here?” She said in rather annoyance or dread, I couldn’t tell which, but by the look on her face, she wasn’t too thrilled by their presence.

“Looks like Matt must have invited them to go swimming too.” I said as I watched Jimmy wrestle with Johnny as they were getting out of the car.

“So…they’re going to be in the pool…with us? In our bathing suits?” She asked, beginning to bite her lip in a nervous habit.

I gave her a slight nod as she continued to watch them coming our way. “Yeah, unless you plan on going commando-Oh hey, guys. What’s up?” I changed the subject midsentence as they strode up the steps of the porch.

“Hey, what’s up?” Johnny greeted us as the rest them stood beside us, in front of the door. “Are you guys coming with us to-Agh!” He grunted mid-sentence as Jimmy quickly elbowed him in the stomach. He and Brian both were giving him a pointed look to silence him.

Rebecca instantly gasped, her hands flying over her mouth and I folded my arms across my chest, scolding them.

“What was that for?” I demanded, wanting to know what they were hiding. I knew these boys for years, and I knew when they were up to something.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Nothing,”

Brian and Jimmy both said together all too quickly while Johnny continued to rub is now bruised ribs, glaring up at Jimmy.

“Johnny, are you okay?” Rebecca asked, still concerned by his pained expression.

I chose to ignore her and continued my investigation. “Oh, really? Then what are you boys doing here?” I asked, hoping to catch one of them slip up again.

“Matt invited us. What do you care?” Brian sneered.

“Why are you two here?” Jimmy asked back with less harshness to his tone than Brian’s to change the subject.

I ignored that as well. “Alright, what are you guys up to? Obviously you’re trying to hide something.” I said as I folded my arms across my chest.

“Why don’t you mind your own Methany?” Brian used the name that he knew I hated.

I scowled. “I do not to meth damn it! How many times do I have to tell you that Haner?”

“Then how come you’re so good at sports? You gotta be on some kind of drug to win the winning goal that many times in a row.” He continued to mock me.

I took a step closer. “For your information, I won those soccer games fair and square, and yes, if you must know, I am that good.”

We continued our glare-off with each other until Jimmy finally decided to step in. “Alright you two, enough.” He said, coming to stand in between us. “Let’s all just get inside and then go our separate ways. Okay?”

Brian huffed and I rolled my eyes, but Rebecca and I decided to agree and rang the door bell.
