Chapter 5

It was noon and Samantha was still in bed. She was curled up on her side with the blanket pulled up to her face. Her pillow was damp from the tears she shed. Much to her dismay, she remembered everything that happened last night. She felt regretful for everything: for drinking too much, for giving Corey her number and for making a scene in front of everyone. She appreciated Becca inviting her out but she just wished her night didn’t end like it did. But out of everything that happened last night, she thought most about Matt and his bitchy girlfriend. She wondered what Matt liked about Anna; she was just another Melissa. In fact, this whole situation felt similar to the Melissa situation. Though Sammy figured this time would be different; Matt wouldn’t choose her over Anna. She sighed as she tried to hold back another round of tears. She was getting frustrated. She was tired of crying over Matt. She wanted to move on but something in the back of her mind kept telling her he will come around again. She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and sat up. Just as she was about to yank the covers off, her phone started to ring. She grabbed it without looking at the caller I.D and answered.

“Hello.”

“Hey, Sammy,” said Rene on the other line, sounding chipper.

“I’m guessing you’re calling to ask about my night?” Sam asked nonchalant.

“Of course! But I figured we could Skype.”

Samantha got out of bed and walked to her dresser with the phone between her ear and her shoulder.

“Sure. Let me get dressed really quick and I’ll sign on.”

“Ok! See you then,” said Rene.

Samantha placed her phone on top of her dresser as she rummaged through her drawers. She pulled out a set of navy blue undergarments, a white long sleeved shirt and a pair of blue jeans. She ran to the bathroom and took a quick 10-minute shower before getting dressed. She went over to her computer and got it ready. While waiting, she went into the kitchen and poured herself a glass of chocolate milk. She then sat down in front of the computer and signed into Skype. Rene was already online so she clicked video call.

“Hellooo,” sang Rene.

Rene had her hair down with a headband and wore a Chicago Bulls sweatshirt.

“Ugh, that’s my sweatshirt!” Samantha whined.

Rene laughed, “Yep! You left it here. Besides, it’s colder here than it is in Cali.”

Samantha playfully rolled her eyes, “Whatever.”

Rene took a bite of her toast before starting her interrogation.

“Enough small talk, I want to know about last night.”

Samantha sighed, crossing her arms across her chest.

“Oh shit! That bad huh?” asked Rene.

“It didn’t start bad. Sitting across from Matt and then cussing out his girlfriend just made it end bad.”

“No fucking way? Sammy, I am so sorry.” Rene apologized. “Was it just them two that showed up?”

“No, all of my old friends were there too. I was enjoying my time with them until Matt’s girlfriend accused me of breaking Matt’s heart.”

Rene’s sorrowful expression turned into a scowl as she listened to Samantha talk.

“That fucking bitch! Did you beat her ass?”

Samantha laughed despite the intense conversation.

“No, but I did cuss her out,” Sam smirked.

Rene chuckled and fist bumped her screen. Samantha returned it.

“Can we talk about something else now?” Sammy asked.

“Sure, hun... You met a guy didn’t you?”

Samantha nodded slowly before questioning her, “How the fuck did you know?”

“Omg, I want details. What’s his name? What does he look like?”

“He’s handsome. Not as handsome as Matt-“

Samantha froze. Did she just compare Corey to Matt?

“Umm… His name is Corey. He has nice pale blue eyes, blonde hair that stops just below his ears and he’s a bit muscular.”

Samantha made sure not to compare Corey’s muscle mass to Matt’s, even though she was thinking about it.

“Sounds like you picked a good one, Sammy.”

Samantha nodded. She wasn’t going to tell Rene how she was having second thoughts about Corey. She didn’t want their conversation to turn serious again.

“Maybe he’ll call you later and you guys can go out for ice cream or something. It’ll get your mind off of last night,” said Rene.

“That would be nice."

They sat in silence for a few seconds as Rene muched on her toast.

"I’m going over to Sugar Shack to apply for a job this afternoon.” Samantha decided this while lying in bed earlier. Having a job would keep her from starving. It would also keep her from being alone with her thoughts.

“Nice! Isn’t that the breakfast place you always talked about?”

“Yep. They have the best pancakes,” Samantha grinned.

“Ok, I’ll let you go get ready. I have laundry to do. Talk to you soon, Sam!” said Rene, waving. Samantha said goodbye and ended the Skype call.

Samantha walked out of Sugar Shack and made her way back to her car. She had just applied for a job as a waitress. The manager said she will most likely get the job since they need extra help for the upcoming holiday. She will know for sure in a few days. She was on her way back to her house when her phone rang. She kept one hand on the steering wheel and answered it.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Samantha.” greeted Corey.

Is Rene a psychic now?

“Hi, Corey! What’s up?”

“Nothing much. Are you free right now?”

“Yeah. Wanna meet up?” Despite her second thoughts, Sam decided to give him a chance.

“Yes! How about we meet at the boardwalk?”

“Ok, I’ll be there soon.”

“Awesome! See ya then.” Corey said before hanging up.

Samantha parked her car near the boardwalk. She checked herself out in the mirror before getting out the car. She wiped her clammy hands over her sweater as she walked over to Corey. He was dressed in a white shirt, a black leather biker’s jacket and jeans. Despite Sam’s nerves, she couldn’t help but check him out.

“Hey, pretty lady,” greeted Corey.

“Hello, handsome man,” Sam replied, laughing.

Corey pulled Samantha in for a small hug.

“So, are you hungry? I was thinking we could eat at Duke's. That’s if you like seafood,” Corey offered.

Samantha wasn’t a huge fan of seafood. But she agreed since Duke's was located on the boardwalk. Corey held her hand as they walked there. Once they arrived, a waiter escorted them to a table with a nice view of the ocean. Samantha took a seat and looked over the menu. She smiled when she found chicken on the menu. Corey ordered sushi and two glasses of wine for Samantha and himself.

“So where do you work?” Sam asked before taking a bite of her chicken sandwich.

Corey swallowed his food before answering, “I work at Harley Davidson. I’m a bike mechanic.”

“Oh awesome. That’s pretty neat,” Samantha replied.

“You actually think that’s interesting?” asked Corey, grinning.

Samantha sipped her wine, “Yeah! I have a thing for stuff like that. I own a 67’ Mustang.”

Corey looked at the beautiful brunette with shock written on his face.

“You own a muscle car? That makes you ten times hotter!”

Samantha laughed out loud. Corey smiled at her and finished his last piece of sushi. They continued to get to know each other while finishing their wine. She told him about her family and friends. He told her about his brother who serves in the military and his strong relationship with his father, who also fixes bikes for a living.

It was going on 8pm when they left the restaurant. Samantha had enjoyed her time with Corey. He was easy to talk to and he actually listened to her. He had his arm lightly wrapped around her waist as he walked her to her car.

“I had an amazing time with you, Samantha. We should do this more often.”

“I agree. Here-” Samantha gave him her phone so he could put his number in it. He typed his number into the phone and handed it back to her.

“Thanks for reminding me,” said Corey.

It was silent for a bit before Corey spoke again.

“Do you mind if I kiss you?”

Samantha was surprised by his question. She didn’t want to move to quickly with Corey. But she decided a kiss wouldn’t hurt. She looked at him and nodded. He smiled before slowly bringing her chin up and leaning down to capture her lips. The kiss was quick but sweet. She giggled when he pulled away.

“I’ll call you tomorrow, beautiful,” said Corey.

“Ok!”

Samantha got in her car and headed home. She had a huge grin on her face the whole way there. She couldn’t wait to tell Rene and Becca about her date with Corey. She parked her car in the driveway and manually locked it before finding the key to her front door. She walked up the steps and found a piece of paper taped to her door. She took it down and read it:

Hi, Sammy. I came here to apologize to you about last night but you weren’t home. I am truly sorry and I hope we can catch up soon. –Matt

Samantha sighed when she finished reading the piece of paper. Forgetting about Matt won’t be so easy after all.
