you saved me

I woke up to an empty bed with a note on the pillow.

You couldn't say you love me. I'm sorry I just need to think.

I set the note down, shocked. The phone rang and I scrambled to grab it. "Hello?" I whispered. "Jessy," it was Matt, "Zack was in an accident. You need to get to the hospital now." I hung up the phone without even saying goodbye. I jumped out of bed, threw on clothes and shoes and ran out the door. I jumped on bike and started riding without even putting on my helmet.
I got to the hospital, jumped off my bike and ran inside. "Zachary baker!" I said to the woman behind desk. "364" she replied. I ran towards the stairs. I reached the third floor and skidded to a stop at the desk "364?" I asked breathless. The woman pointed to the left and I started running again.
I saw Matt and as I got closer I realized how bad he looked. I tried to get into the room but Matt stopped me. He wrapped me in a hug and began to sob on my shoulder. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "No!" I shouted as I tried to get into the room. Running into Matt was like hitting a brick wall. Eventually I just fell to the ground.
That's when I woke to hands on my shoulders and terrified emerald eyes staring at me. "Zack!" I gasped as I wrapped my arms around him, bawling my eyes out. He sat down and pulled me onto his lap. He sat holding me for God only knows how long.
"Can you tell me what happened?" He asked eventually. "You," I started nervously, "you left me because I couldn't say I love you. And you were in an accident. I tried to see you but Matt wouldn't let me in." I cried more. "It's okay baby," he whispered, "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere." We sat in silence again.
After a while he broke the silence. "I know what'll cheer you up, go put on your swimming suit and meet me outside." I climbed off his lap, still covering myself with the blanket. He stood up, sliped on sweat pants then tossed me a T-shirt. I slipped it on and crawled out of the bed.
Once I was in my room I dug out my bikini. I slipped it on and put his T-shirt over it. I walked outside to find Zack in swim trunks standing beside a hot tub with a bottle of wine and two glasses. He stepped in and sat down. I stripped off his shirt and climbed in quickly so he wouldn't have to see me.
Once I was in he poured me a glass of wine. "So," he started, "why don't you tell me about your tattoos. The one on your right arm especially." "Well," I started awkardly, "my grandma loved owls and my grandpa loved '57 chevy trucks and they were seperated and really didn't like eachother so that's why it says 'you may hate eachother but I love you." He nodded, trying to encourage me to continue. I took a gulp of my wine, "let's change this, tell me about you." He told me about his life and his family. About his friends and past lovers. By the time he was done I had drank 3 glasses of wine.
The wine made me brave, "Zack," I slurred, "why did you say you love me?" He cocked an eyebrow, "because I love you," he said, "why else would I say that?" I stared at the wine in my glass as I sloshed it around. "You shouldn't have. You may think you love me but you don't. I'm not the type of person people fall in love with." I threw back the rest of my wine.
He stared at me. "Why would you say that?" He whispered. "It's true," I said, "I'm scarred, broken and unwanted." He pulled me onto his lap and held me like I was a little kid. "Don't say that," he scolded, "I want you. I've never wanted anything more in my life."
