Forgotten Faces

"So how'd you get hit?" the school nurse Jenny asked me.

She honestly didn't seem to care too much about my injury. I would have been more offended if it wasn't just a smack to the face from a basketball.

I shrugged, not really wanting to answer her. I also just wasn't very sure myself. Not to mention, I was still in his arms, which didn't make me feel comfortable at all. I wanted him to put me down. I almost needed to put me down.

"Are you just bad at sports," she asked me.

I shrugged once more deciding that she was just trying to poke fun at me.

I just kept on wondering if he'd drop me suddenly, calling me fat or something like that. It was a good thing he was big or my fear would really have bothered me a lot more.

It wasn't just the fear of being called fat that unnerved me. I had to slightly admit to myself that he was an attractive guy.

He was out of my league to be honest. If I were even allowed in any leagues though.

"Well, I think it was because you were too busy looking at me, to pay any attention to the ball," he said casually.

I mentally slapped myself, while I felt myself glare internally.

Why would he even bring that up? That wasn't any of her business, and I certainly didn't want to even acknowledge that I was staring at him.

"Why were you staring at me?" I shot back at him. He just kept on grinning. It might have even grown wider now.

"I want my answer," I said softly. I nearly laughed at myself. I sounded like a five-year asking where babies came from. I was so useless.

"That's easy," he said.

"Then give me my answer," I mumbled. It was bugging me now. I really wanted that answer now.

Why wasn't he answering me quicker?

"Look, I'm gonna get you some ice for that cheek. You two just behave or something," the nurse said walking off.

He still didn't bother putting me down or answering my question. He kind of just stood there.

"Just give me my answer," I said roughly.

"You're beginning to be a bother," he said smirking.

"Give me my answer ahora," I said speaking a little louder than a whisper. He just stared at me confused.

I wasn't quite sure why one Spanish word decided to slip out of my lips, but if I had to guess, it'd be that after three years of Spanish, words just came out.

Did he not know what “ahora” meant or was he trying his best to not answer me at the moment?

"Don't you take Spanish?" I asked. He shrugged.

"I took Spanish for three years. I was in Spanish 3 last year," he said.

"Yet, you still don't know what “ahora” means?" I asked.

He gave me another grin, before he answered me.

"Things go in one ear and out the other," he said. I couldn't help myself, and I felt a small smile creep onto my face.

“You can put me down on the bed, you know?” I asked. He shrugged.

“I know.”

Why was he still holding me then?

“Here’s your ice,” Jenny the nurse said walking back into the room.

She was staring at us rather blankly.

What did we look weird together? Did she think this looked wrong?

“You can put her on the bed,” Jenny repeated herself. He nodded slightly.

“I know, but she fits so perfectly into my arms,” he said with a grin on his face. I felt my face flush.

How could someone possibly be this bold?

“Oh, of course, here’s the ice.” Jenny said.

I took the ice from her hand, and I pressed it lightly against my right cheek. It stung a lot, but I kept it on my face.

“Does it sting?” He asked. I chose to ignore him.

He finally set me down on the bed.

I felt less flustered, when he wasn’t holding me in his arms. When his hands weren’t touching my body, I felt that I could breathe more steadily.

“Whatever, princess,” he said with another wide grin.

The grin, it always seemed to be plastered on his face. The dimples though. They almost made me not want to yell at him. They were a sweet touch to the rather tough looking face he had.

He gently took the bag of ice from my hands.

“You’re much too rough with your own face,” he said softly.

“I am not,” I said muttered. He chuckled softly.

“Stay still,” he said in a hushed tone.

I felt myself instantly freeze. Well, every part of me except my legs froze. They didn’t seem to quit moving, shaking.

“You’re still shaking, you know?” He asked. I nodded, but I don’t think he noticed at all.

“Yeah, I know. I just don’t know why though,” I muttered.

“Maybe you’re scared,” he said softly.
