Danger Line (re-write)

Romeo and Juliet Type Thing

Hannah
Beth loved the park; she always had, and today was no exception. When we’d first got here, I couldn’t stop myself from worrying over what was happening between Erin and Dean back at the house, he was always so protective of Erin over the years and I always had the feeling that he never liked Zack. We’d been at the park for almost an hour now and I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face as I watched Sam chase Beth around the park, lifting her over his head so that she was at the top of the slide before running around to the bottom so he could catch her at the end when she slid down. Her squeals and giggles filled my ears, and to me, Beth having fun in the mess that was my life, was my favourite thing to watch and listen to. She was so young and innocent, and she gave me hope.

“You’re the last person I expected to see here,” A familiar voice came from beside me as the presence next to me on the bench made me feel even more at ease than I already was.

“I could say the same about you,” I smiled softly, leaning to the side until my head was on his shoulder.

“You used to love coming to the park when you were a kid, Cooper did too,” I looked up at my father’s face and saw him watching Sam and Beth “I always knew he would be good with kids,”

“You knew that because whenever Dean couldn’t get Beth to stop crying, Sam always could,”

“That’s not the only reason,” He told me “There’s just something about him that screams father material,”

“Daddy, if this is your gentle way of telling me you want me to have kids with Sam, it’s kind of creepy,” I giggled.

“Sure as Hell beats having kids with Sanders,” He scoffed “When are you coming over for dinner? We miss you at the house,”

“How about tonight?” I asked “I’ll bring Sam instead of Matt, give Dean some time alone to bond with his daughter some more,”

“Sounds good to me,” He smiled widely “I need you to do your big sister thing,”

“Why?” I asked, frowning and pulling away from him “Cooper isn’t getting himself into any trouble, is he?”

“Not without my help,” Dad laughed “I think he has a girlfriend, but he just doesn’t want to bring her home, or he’s snooping around with her,”

“I’ll find out who she is,” I said confidently “It’s my job to know all of these things about Cooper,”

“Convince him to bring her over to the house before the end of the month and I’ll give you fifty bucks,”

“Deal,”

A loud thud, followed by a moment of silence before a cry of terror sounded throughout the park.
I jumped to my feet, recognizing the cry and saw Beth at the bottom of the climbing frame. I looked around for Sam as I took off running towards the screaming girl lying on the ground, and saw him running to her, too.

“It’s okay,” I shushed Beth as I took her in my arms “I’m here baby, what happened?” She tried to tell me what happened, but the large sobs wracking her small body made it almost impossible for her to speak. But she shifted in my arms, tucked her head into my neck and grabbed a fistful of my hair “Sam?” I asked, looking up at his concerned face.

“I saw it from over there,” He pointed to where he had been “She wanted to race, and she was coming up the frame when she missed her footing and fell off,”

“Beth,” I cooed, lifting us both off of the ground and walking back over to the bench where my dad was now standing “Can you tell me what hurts?”

“M-my h-head,” he stuttered, letting go of my hair for a second to touch the back of her head.

When her hand returned to my hair, my own hand gently brushed the back of her head, making her whimper a little.

“What else?” I asked, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

“Elbow,” Was all she said. I moved her arm ever so gently so that I could see her elbow, it was scraped and bleeding a little bit.

“Why don’t we take you back to our house and make you all better?” I asked and she nodded into my neck. I looked at my dad and gave him a pleading look “Can you drive us?”

“Of course,” He smiled.
~~~~
We got Beth back to the house and I patched her all up in the kitchen, kissed her sore bits all better and gave her a candy bar, which ended up all over her face and her bunny rabbit teddy. A small sugar rush later, she crashed out on the sofa on Jimmy’s lap, her head resting against his chest, his shirt in her little fist.
“Sam,” Brian spoke, entering the room with a beer in his hand “I don’t think you should be here,”
“He’s fine,” I warned, texting Erin again to tell her to come home.
“Matt’s going to wake up soon, and given the amount of alcohol he consumed last night, the hangover isn’t going to be pretty, and I don’t think either of you want to be around for that,”
“I’ve dealt with Matt in a worse state than a nasty hangover, but he’s getting everything he deserves,”
“You can’t give him shit about being unfaithful to you,” Johnny chimed in “You’ve been screwing around with Sam for months, since Matt was put in the hospital, Matt does it once, gets caught and you go ape shit?” He asked “how is that fair?”
“He forced me into a relationship with him,” I snapped “He forced me to be his fiancé, and I almost became his wife, and nothing about being with him was fun at all, Sam is fun, being with
Sam was always fun, and I deserved a little something,”
“You’re right about that,” Matt’s voice came from behind us, making us all turn around to see the state of him, it had clearly been a rough night “I don’t blame you for feeling the need to seek passion elsewhere, you certainly weren’t letting me in those panties,” The smirk on his face
made me sick to my stomach “Sammy should have just been a little more responsible, since he knows what I can do,”
“That was a long time ago,” Sam growled at Matt “And I almost fucking had you,”
“But you were too drunk to finish me off, right?” Matt laughed “Too drunk and broken up over the love of your live leaving you for no reason,”
“I left him to save him,” I hissed.
“Yet you almost killed him,” Matt laughed louder, coming into the room.
I gave Jimmy a look and he knew to get Beth out of the room, and in the blink of an eye he was on his feet and had her out of the room and I could hear him climbing the stairs.
“Hannah,” Sam said “Don’t listen to him, you did nothing like that,”
“What did you do, Sam?” I asked “After I left you, what did you do with yourself?”
Sam looked at me with his big doe eyes and then looked to the floor, swallowing hard and fighting the tears in his eyes.
“Sam?” I asked, raising my voice a little more “What did you do?” My voice wavered and broke as I fought my own tears.
“Little Sammy ran off with his daddy and his brother,” Matt answered for Sam “Started hunting, killing people every single day, drinking on the job, drinking at dinner, breakfast and in the middle of the night when John and Dean were sleeping in their own shitty motel beds,”
“Then the day came where Matt was on our list,” Sam said gruffly, lifting his head and looking directly at Matt “Matt was the reason so many innocent people were dying for no reason at all, and it was our job to stop him…”
“But?” I asked.
“I was too drunk, and I was one punch away from killing the son of a bitch when I blacked out,”
He took a deep breath and let it out slowly as he tried to ignore the heartbroken look on my face
“I woke up three days later in the hospital with alcohol poisoning, plus I’d been beaten to a pulp,”
“I had to get a few punches in there, couldn’t look week when I got home to my boys now, could I?” Matt straightened himself up and walked so close to Sam that they were practically nose to nose “And I’m going to do it again,”
Cooper
Dad told me that Hannah and Sam were coming to dinner tonight, and I knew what that meant. We were getting Chinese takeout from Hannah’s favourite restaurant in a hundred mile radius.
“I’m gonna take a shower,” I grunted loudly as I pushed myself off the couch and stretched myself out.
“Again?” Dad asked from his chair “You’re a young man, Coop, when I was your age I didn’t shower half as much as you have been recently,”
“I just like to keep clean,” I defended myself, holding up my hands in front of me “You’re my dad, I live in your house, and you should be thankful I’m not stinking the place out with my man smell,”
“You may take after me on the business side of things, but other than that you are exactly like your mother and your sister,”
I just smiled at him, shook my head and walked away.
After my shower I got myself dressed in a t-shirt, denim shirt over it and a pair of jeans. I knew
my dad was suspicious about my actions recently, but I have a secret… a girlfriend. If anyone in my family finds out who she is, they’ll have my head, if her family find out, they’ll take the stick with my head on it and use it as garden decoration.
A small smile played on my lips as I thought about her, no matter what could happen to me for being with her, she’s worth all of it. My phone started to ring beside my TV, I jumped over my bed and picked it up seeing her name flashing across the screen.
“Hey baby,” I answered, pressing the phone against my ear.
“Hello handsome,” She giggled into the phone “What are you doing?”
“Getting ready for Hannah and Sam coming over,” I groaned, running my free hand down my
face.
“They’re back together?” She asked “I thought that ended years ago,”
“It did,” I shrugged “I don’t think they’re a couple since Hannah’s supposed to be engaged to Matt, but who knows these days, my sister sure has a hectic life,”
“That she does,” She laughed a little again “I have to babysit tonight, Hannah was top of the list but since she isn’t available tonight I have to watch Mac,”
“You wanna sneak over here later?” I asked “I’ll let you know when they leave,”
“I’ll be there,”
“I’ll leave the window open,”
I know, normally the guy is supposed to be the one sneaking through the girls window in the middle of the night, but that’s a risk she doesn’t want me to take.
I sat on my big comfy chair at my desk and kept talking to her for a little over an hour, that was another thing I loved about her; I never got bored of talking to her. The doorbell sounded
throughout the house.
“I gotta go,” I told her “Hannah’s here,”
“Yeah, me too,” She groaned, stretching herself out “Text me when you get a chance,”
“Of course,”
There was a moment of silence before she said anything again.
“I love you, Cooper.”
“I love you too, baby.”
“Coop!” Dad shouted from downstairs “Get down here, your sister is here!”
“Coming!” I called back.
I jogged down the stairs, as I jumped off the last two steps and landed in the hallway, I heard my older sister laugh. I looked up to see her shaking her head and smiling at me.
“What?” I asked, walking over to her and wrapping my arms around her in a loving, baby brother embrace.
“You’ve done that since we were kids,” She chuckled “And you’re still just a big kid,”
“You taught me to do that though,” I reminded her as we pulled away and walked into the living room.
“Because I’m an amazing big sister,” She reminded me.
“Enough,” Dad laughed “Your heads are already too big, don’t go boosting each other’s ego,”
~~~~
Dad ordered everyone’s favourite for dinner and we ate in the dining room. Although the three of us had our own favourites, it didn’t stop us from stealing off of each other’s plates.

“Where’s Sam?” Dad asked, putting his forkful of Hannah’s food into his mouth “I thought the two of you were coming,”

“He was supposed to come,” I snorted and Dad shot me a warning look “But he came back to the house with Beth and I, he came inside and Matt wasn’t exactly happy when he woke up hung over as fuck, and one thing lead to another and Matt pounded him into the living room floor, and he would’ve killed him if the rest of the guys hadn’t been able to pull him off of Sam,”

“How bad does his face look?” I asked.

“Terrible,” She cringed “I don’t think he’s going to want to leave the house for a month,”

“I hope he got some punches of his own on Matt,” Dad said “I should have put that bastard six feet under the second he laid a hand on you,”

“Dad…” Hannah sighed.

“No!” Dad snapped “You’re my little girl, and he’s just some sick bastard who could never get a girl as amazing as you on his own so he forced you into something you didn’t want to do, and I couldn’t do anything to get you out of it because he’s almost as powerful as your uncles and I are,”

“That’s only because his dad and uncles retired, so that’s kind of cheating,”

Dad didn’t know that Hannah and Matt weren’t engaged anymore, I knew that because when Hannah called to tell me about what happened, she was a bit of a mess – reasons unknown – and she told me not to tell Dad, I knew she had her reasons, but I didn’t want her getting hurt because of her own damn secrets.

“She doesn’t need us to get her out of us,” I chipped in “Right, Hannah?” She gave me a knowing look and a thankful smile and nodded.

“Right,” She said, turning back to look at Dad “I’m a big girl now, I can take care of myself,”

“Well, I know you didn’t put the bullet in his head,” Dad chuckled “So sometimes it’s best if Zack sticks around when Matt’s in a bad mood,”

Hannah
After dinner and a few beers, Dad fell asleep in his chair in front of the TV and Cooper and I moved into the back yard and sat at the table. I leaned back in my chair and propped my sock-clad feet on the table and sighed with a smile on my face.

“What’s got you so happy?” Cooper asked “I haven’t seen you like this since, since…”

“Since I was with Sam before?” I guessed the end of his sentence.

“Pretty much,” He chuckled “That guy does something to you, Banana.”

I looked across the table at him and rolled my eyes at him.

“He makes me happy,”

“But it’s not him you’re marrying?”

“Correct,”

He looked at me, confused for a second before pinning me with his brotherly look.

“You love Sam,” He stated “He makes you happy, I haven’t seen you smile like that since you left him, the two of you are perfect for each other,” He let out a slow breath “But you and Matt can’t stand each other, he makes you miserable and when you’re with him all you seem to do is cry or get angry-“

“But I’m not marrying him,” I cut him off, my voice low in case Dad was awake and listening “Not yet anyway, but I’m not going to marry Sam, because things are going perfectly the way they are just now and we don’t need to do that, but if Matt proves himself to me, then I’m going to go through with the deal we made together, and I’ll break it off with Sam,”

He dropped his head onto the wooden table with a thud and groaned.

“We really have ourselves in a fuck up, don’t we?”

I don’t think he was actually asking me, it was more directed at himself, but I answered anyway.

“Well I know how fucked up my life is, but what about yours?” I asked, giving him a knowing
smirk as he lifted his head to look at me “You can tell me, Coop.”

“I can only tell you a little bit,”

“I’ll take what I can get,” I shrugged “What?”

“I have a girlfriend,”

“So Dad was right,” I laughed.

“Dad put you up to this?” He asked, glaring at me like a little brat.

“No, but he might have mentioned it and peaked my interest,”

“Whatever,” He sighed “I’m crazy about this girl, we’ve been together for a few months now and
I’m positive I love her,”

“Who is she?” I asked.

“That’s the thing,” He looked at his hands that were clasped around his beer bottle “I can’t tell
you that, because I’ll get myself killed.”

“Why would you get killed for telling me your little girlfriend’s name?” I asked.

“It’s because of who she is, and who I am, it’s basically a Romeo and Juliet type thing,”

“Well don’t go secretly marrying her and then wind up killing yourselves,”

“I’ll be sure that doesn’t happen,” He chuckled, taking another swig of his beer “But the secret is slowly killing me itself, I want to scream my love for her from the rooftops, I want to marry her someday and make her my wife, but… it just can’t happen,”

“Cooper…” I whispered, scooting over a little bit to wrap my arm around him and pull him against me so that his head was resting on my shoulder “You’re my little brother, and I always told you that you could tell me anything and I would never judge you, I’d try not to get mad and understand, and that still stands today,” He looked up at me with his big blue eyes and smiled softly “So, when you feel like the time is right, you can tell me who she is, and I’ll judge how badly you’ve fucked up, okay?”

“Okay,”

“Okay,”

Erin
After Dean and I had our little… thing in the kitchen, I checked my phone while we got ourselves cleaned up and saw three missed calls from Hannah and a text from Sam telling me that Beth had fallen at the park and hurt herself but they were taking her back to the house to fix her up because it wasn’t too serious. I told Dean what had happened and rushed away, telling him to stay at home because I wouldn’t be able to explain that to Zack, since he was probably already questioning the fact that I wasn’t with Hannah and Sam when Beth got hurt.

I let myself back into the house and was instantly greeted by Zack, who scooped me up in his arms and kissed me deeply.

“Where were you, Erin?” He asked softly, a worried tone in his voice “Nobody could get a hold of you,”

“Sorry, darling.” I cooed a little, playing with the hair on the back of his head “I was doing some research, a little business of my own and I didn’t have my phone on,”

“It’s alright,” He sighed, sounding relieved “I was worried that something might have happened to you,”

“Well I’m here, and I’m safe,” I smiled at him as he put me back on my feet “Where’s Beth?” I asked.

“Matt got a little mad earlier and Sam was here, Jimmy took Beth and put her to bed a few hours
ago, but then she wanted to play,”

Jimmy walked by and stopped, turned and looked at me, the sight of him made me burst out in a fit of laughter. Beth had clearly gotten her makeup set out and her hair accessories and made fun out of Jimmy’s complexion and long, dark hair.

“Your daughter is asleep,” Jimmy told me, narrowing his eyes at me “And do not laugh at Miss Beth’s masterpiece, she is a very talented stylist, I see a future in it for her,”

“Good,” I smiled at him, coming down from my laughter “I’ll go up and tell her what a wonderful job she did on Uncle Jimmy,”

I eased my way into Beth’s bedroom and found her sleeping soundly in her bed. She looked so adorable when she slept, peaceful and happy, but she was always happy. The Barbie band aid on her elbow made me supress a laugh and smile down at her.

I crouched by her bed and smoothed my hand over her hair before leaning up and pressing a kiss to her forehead.

“Mama?” She whispered. When I pulled away I saw her eyes were open and she was looking right at me.

“Hey baby,”

“What time is it?” She asked.

“Time for you to sleep, baby girl,” I smiled at her.

“Why do you smell like Daddy?” She asked, rubbing her eyes sleepily. What’s with kids and questions.

“Because I saw Daddy earlier, remember?” She nodded “Go back to sleep baby, and I’ll see you in the morning and we can have pancakes with loads of syrup,”

“Night Mama,”

“Night baby,”
