Help Me

Let It Go

I walked up the stairs getting kind of worried at how quiet it was up here. I walked past Serenity’s room, making my way to the pink room where Lyn-Lyn sleeps and stood in the doorway, watching Serenity lay in bed with her baby girl cuddled up next to her in a Hello Kitty bed with a giant pink canopy hanging from the ceiling. Serenity laid there reading a little book about unicorns to Evelyn, who was looking a little green.
“Are you two okay up here,” I asked quietly, not wanting to bother Lyn-Lyn in case there was something worse going on with her.
The girls looked up at me, and Evelyn reached her little arms out to me.
“Jimmy,” she pouted, sticking her little bottom lip out, crocodile tears going down her cheeks.

My heart started to swell, my God I hated to see her cry.
“Aw baby girl,” I cooed, walking to the side of her bed, where she put her hands on either side of my face. “What’s the matter, princess?”
“I feel icky,” she mumbled.
I looked up at Serenity, and she frowned.
“Is something hurting,” I asked her.
Evelyn shook her head no, but then rubbed her stomach. “My tummy just feels nasty,” she said simply.
I frowned and looked into her tear filled eyes. “Can mommy and I do something to make you feel better,” I asked in a tiny voice.
Lyn-Lyn’s lip trembled. “Can you take a nap with me and mommy,” she asked sweetly.
“Of course I can,” I told her, smiling. “But it has to be okay with your mama.”

Evelyn turned to Serenity, making the same face she made at me. Serenity sighed and then smiled.
“Sure baby,” she said to her daughter. “Let’s take you a hot bath first, okay?”
“Okay mommy,” Evelyn said, getting up slowly then walking to the restroom.

Serenity got up to go after her, but just before she started to walk away I grabbed her arm and pulled her to me.
“Be mine,” I whispered in her ear.
Serenity looked up me, “Really?”
I laughed and nodded at her. “Yes, really,” I said. “I need you. You and that little girl. I’ve got her in the bag, I just need you for the full package, baby. Just say yes, and that’s all I need. Please?”
Serenity smiled at me, then went to her tiptoes so that I could press my lips to hers.
“Okay,” she answered. “I’ll be yours.”
“Perfect,” I said, kissing her again.

Serenity walked away from me to go to Evelyn and I stood there kind of dumbfounded.
“Holy shit… This is awesome!”

~Serenity’s P.O.V.~

I couldn’t believe he asked me. I didn’t think it would happen, to be honest. My heart was still pounding, but that was short lived when I walked into the restroom.

“I’m sorry mama,” Evelyn said, tears running down her face. “I didn’t make it.”
I immediately smelled the vomit once I got to the door, but that isn’t what freaked me out. Blood. There was blood in her vomit. I turned around and took a really deep breath. I grabbed her arm and pulled her in a way so that she wouldn’t step into it.
“Stay right here, baby,” I told her. “Mommy’s gonna get her phone and I’ll be riiiight back, okay?”
“Okay mama,” Evelyn groaned.

I walked back into her room past Jimmy and grabbed my phone.
“Is everything okay,” he asked.
“No, can I see your phone,” I asked him quietly.
“Uh, sure,” he replied, his voice shaking a bit. “What happened?”

I looked up to him, trying not to cry. “Evelyn just puked on the floor and there’s blood in her vomit. I don’t want to freak her out so I’m going to call the ambulance and take a few pictures just in case.”
Jimmy’s face turned white. ”Fuck…” he whispered. “Okay. I’ll take her downstairs and talk to Abby.”
“Can you have her call Tiffani,” I asked. “She should be on her way already.”
“Aright baby,” Jimmy said. “Let’s go.”

I walked out of the room with Jimmy. Right when he saw Evelyn, he started to coo at her, trying to make her feel as comfortable as possible. He picked her up and she immediately latched on to him.
“Come on baby girl,” he said. “Let’s go downstairs with Abby and we’ll put on a princess movie.”
“Okay Jim Jam,” Evelyn groaned.

I waited until they were down the stairs before I dialed 9-1-1 and started taking pictures.
“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?”
“Hi,” I said quietly. “I’ve got a situation over here. I was calling to see if you can send an ambulance over here.”
“Sure thing hun. Can you tell me what’s going on?”
“Oh, of course,” I said. “I’m sorry if you can’t hear me, I just don’t want to freak my daughter out.”
“That is no problem at all.”
“Okay,” I sighed. “My address is 3010 Mars Street, zip code 284**, and my daughter is a cancer patient. We were lying in bed, reading a book when she started feeling very nauseas. I told her to wait in the bathroom for me while I gathered some stuff for her so that I could give her a bath and when I got to the bathroom, she had puked on the floor. I removed her from the room to start cleaning when I noticed that there were traces of blood in her vomit.”
“Oh, I am so sorry,” the operator said. “Dispatches are on their way, sweetheart.”
“Thank you so much,” I said, sighing heavily. “Can you ask that once they get to my street that the sirens are turned off? I really want to keep my daughter as calm as possible.”
“No problem hun,” the operator replied. “Would you like for me to stay on the line?”
“No thank you ma’am,” I told her. “You’ve been a great help. Thank you. I just want to get back to my daughter.”
“I understand, honey. Good luck.”

And with that, she hung up. I walked down the stairs to find Jimmy on the couch with Evelyn in his lap, watching Frozen. Abby stood at the door with a worried look on her face, jumping a bit when she heard Tiff’s car pull up.
“Hey,” I told her.
Abby turned to me, biting her lip to keep from panicking.
“You okay,” I asked, feeling braver than usual.
“Yeah,” she said, letting out her breath, opening the door for Tiffani who went straight to the upstairs bathroom. “I just wish this weren’t happening.”
“You and me both,” I sighed. “Come on, relax, okay?’
Abby nodded, and Tiffani came down with bag. I sat down next to Jimmy, and Abby sat next to me, chewing on her nails. Tiff got down in front of Jimmy and opened her bag pulling out a blood pressure cuff and a number of other things, taking Evelyn’s vitals and gently as possible, making sure that she stayed calm.

“Blood pressure is pretty low and she’s running a fever,” Tiffani said. “Evelyn how are you feeling baby?”
“My chess hurts,” Evelyn whined. “Right herreee.”
Tiffani scribbled in a note pad. “Anything else baby,” she asked. “Are you dizzy? Does your head hurt a lot?”
“Uh huh,” Evie mumbled, her lip beginning to tremble.
“Okay love,” Tiffani said, writing in her little book. “Come on Serenity, let’s get her a cup of water.”
“Kay,” I said, giving Evelyn a kiss before getting up.

I grabbed a cup and put some ice in it then filled it with water from a jug that I buy specifically for Evie.
“So what’s going on,” I ask Tiff, turning to her, trying to keep myself together.
“Okay,” she said. “Uhm, has she been throwing up a lot recently? I mean, like, since I’ve been gone.”
“A little more frequently than usual,” I said nodding.
“Alright,” Tiffani said, writing again. “Okay, so I don’t think it’s anything too, too serious. She probably busted a blood vessel somewhere in there from all the heaving. It happens to cancer patients a lot. It’s not an alarming amount of blood, so that’s why I’m not screaming at you as to why you didn’t drive her over there. And it looks like she’s just got a low blood count. They’re more than likely going to give her another blood transfusion and then she’ll be done.”
“Okay,” I said, sighing.

Tiffani looked at me for a while, then pulled me in for a hug.
“Everything is going to be alright,” she said to me. “You’re doing a great job, Serenity. I swear.”
“I’m trying,” I said, letting the tears fall.
“It’ll be okay,” she said. “Okay, now let’s get back and give that baby something to drink.”

Just as we walked back into the living room, the EMTS started to knock on the door.
“I’ll get that,” Tiffani said, walking past us.
I walked over to the armrest that Jimmy was sitting closest to and leaned over to plant kisses on Evelyn’s cheek. It was so obvious that she wasn’t feeling well because usually she’d duck away or laugh, but instead she allowed me to keep kissing her. Once I stopped, Jimmy grabbed my hand and squeeze it. When I looked at him, he pulled me to him and puckered his lips for a kiss.
“Everything okay,” he whispered.
“Yeah,” I said. “Tiff will explain while these guys get her vitals for their records.”
Jimmy nodded and held Evelyn close to him as her eyes stayed glued to Elsa on the T.V., still humming along to “Let It Go,” even as she felt sick.

One of the EMTS came to kneel down next to her and started to sing the song to her, which made her crack a smile.
“Oh wow,” the man said. “You’ve got a smile to knock the wind out of any man!”
“Thank you,” Evelyn giggled.
“No problem sweetheart,” The man told her. “Name is Robert. You can call me Bob, okay?”
“Hi Bob,” Evelyn said shyly.

And from there, Bob took her vitals and asked her how she was feeling, then let her take his blood pressure (with the help of Jimmy since she couldn’t squeeze hard enough), and then we were told exactly what Tiffani told us. With that the EMT’S were on their way since I didn’t want to hassle with the extra cost of having the ambulance drive her to the hospital. Instead, Jimmy offered to drive us all over there, giving me time to clean the bathroom floor, bathe Evelyn, and also giving everyone the chance to change into comfortable clothes since we knew it was going to be a while.
I chose to sit in the back so I could hold my baby. Tiffani sat in back with us in case anything happened, and Abby rode shotgun, giving Jimmy the shortcuts we usually took to the hospital.
“Am I going to have to get a shot, Aunt Tiffi,” Evelyn asked, sadly. Jimmy kept looking back at us through the rearview mirror with a pained look on his face.
“I’m sorry baby,” Tiff said to her. “You are, but it’s so that way you get better. Otherwise you’ll stay sick. You don’t wanna stay sick, now do you?”
“No,” Evelyn whimpered. “It makes my mommy sad.”
I kissed her head and squeezed her to my chest. “I love you baby,” I whispered to her her.
“I love you too mama,” she whispered back sleepily.

“We’re here guys,” Jimmy said, getting out of the car, then opening the door for me so that I could get out without disturbing Evelyn.
Just as I stood up straight, Jimmy grabbed my chin to kiss me again and give me a reassuring smile before we entered the hospital building.

This is going to take a while…
