Not a bad thing

When I arrived at Katie’s, she was already waiting for me on the porch. She looked a little sad and I was wondering what was wrong with her. She got in the car and started talking immediately “So Brian got sick of me huh?” I looked at her puzzled. “What are you talking about?! Oh no, you thought I came to deliver the breakup message?! Oh Katie, no... I really want to go shopping with you!” Katie let go a sigh of relief. “I really thought this was it. Everybody knows he sends you when he wants to break up and I talked to him this morning. He was al grumpy and when he hung up I heard him mumble... “have to talk to Izzie”. So when you called me...””... you thought I only came over to break up with you”. Katie nodded. “I completely understand.. damn, I need to kick his ass, I’m getting a reputation here! Don’t worry, I need an outfit for my date with Chris tonight, it’s our six month anniversary and I could use your help. But let me give you one advise, don’t call Brian that early. We’re not really good with mornings” I told her with a smile on my face. I could just see Katie relax and lean back in her seat. “I really like him you know. I never thought he would be interested. I always thought he was yours, that you guys just needed time. I didn’t want to be the one he was with until he could be with you.”

I needed a little time to process what she said. Brian and I were never an item, and we will never be either. We never had anything more than just friendship for each other. He is just like a big brother... Annoying as hell, but you love em to death. Every time I went to break some girl’s heart I got that “You just want him for you” and one even accused me and Brian of playing a sick game where we get these girls into the picture for our own messed up ways... Being Brian’s sniper isn’t always fun... I’m glad I told him I wouldn’t do it anymore. Everything will change anyhow, with me going off to college in a few weeks. I can’t wait! Not that I won’t miss Brian, but I just need to get out of here.

I was working my butt of to get out of here, rather sooner than later. I accomplished that by going to college as the youngest student ever in my high school. I got my Yale acceptance letter a few months ago. I will be attending business school there after the summer, and that means I will be moving to the other side of the country.

The day I got my acceptance letter, was one of the best days of my life. My mom was over the moon, but also crying that I was moving away. Brian just picked me up, swung me around and when he had finally put me down, we just danced around the room “Maybe I will get accepted to a music school over there. We could go together!” Fact was that Brian never really wanted to go to music school, he just wanted to leave too.

As the months passed by and his letter never came, we started to make other plans. He would just come with me, we would find a place together and he would find a job. By now, a few weeks from me getting on a plane to New Haven, Brian wasn’t so sure about leaving anymore. He and Jimmy, his other best friend, became close and they are jamming more often. They even talked about starting a band. Jimmy was already in one and maybe they would need a guitarist. So I applied for a dorm room and started to accept that I was going there alone. It would be hard though. Brian and I had never been separated for more than a few days, except for an occasional holiday. But he could visit me all the time and I will be coming home for the holidays. We would still be best friends, we didn’t have to be in the same town to have that.

Katie and I arrived at the mall in my little old beetle. I loved my car, my dad got it for me when he left us. I wasn’t really for accepting his presents, but this was love at first sight. I couldn’t wait till I could drive it. It had been standing in our garage for years and the moment I got my driver’s license a few months back, I jumped in and drove it around the whole day. My beautiful beetle was completely tuned, and painted in badass pinch black with white striping. It was a real head turner. That was what my car did now, as I turned onto the parking lot, there was this group of guys staring at my car, and then at us, when we got out of it. “Nice ride honey! Are you taking me for a spin?” I just smiled “You couldn’t handle it, even if I wanted your fat ass in my car”. His face fell.. didn’t see that one coming. I get that a lot. I’m a little geeky looking, and Brian always says that I didn’t only was a nerd, but looked like one too. Katie laughed “Your mouth never fails you huh?”. “No not really, Brian taught me that. I was really timid when I was younger. My life got way easier now that I’m not anymore. Now, let’s do some shopping! I need to look hot tonight!”.

We walked into the mall and went all out. Katie helped me pick the perfect dress for tonight, I even got matching shoes. After hours of walking around, carrying more and more bags, we were beat and made our way to the food court to give our feet some rest. “So you really like Brian huh?” I asked Katie. I watched her whole face light up. “Yeah I do, I was over the moon when he asked me out on a date. He was really nice to me, we had this great evening, and when we kissed... damn! It has been an amazing two months. We really have a lot of fun together. I never thought it could be like this. My ex was kind of an ass, he cheated on me, so I was a little reluctant to date Brian. I know his reputation, but have you noticed how hot he is?!” she blushed a little. I laughed, I heard the first date story right after Brian got home that night. He is such a girl sometimes. “Yeah I know how hot he is, he tells me all the time...” I winked at her. “But it’s like looking at my brother.... I’m so grossed out” Katie laughed at my disgusted face. I just saw she wanted to ask me something else, but didn’t know if she could. So I gave her this look which said “go on”. She hesitated, “How did this whole sniper thing actually happened?”

I told her the Iris-Sean story. “Sean and I held hands for a few months, he did even kiss me a few times at the swing set. Of course we didn’t last through summer. We were 6 years old for God’s sake! But I was always more the long relationship type and never to go to the next fast.” Maybe I shouldn’t tell Katie this, Brian’s longest relationship lasted 4 months before he send me on a mission and the next one was always around the corner. But should I really tell his current girlfriend that? Katie noticed me stopping in the middle of my story and saw the look on my face. “Don’t worry Ismay, I know how he works.”

I continued “After that we were inseparable, always the three of us. Me, Brian, and the girl of the moment. I ended up breaking a lot of girls hearts.” “Why didn’t you stop doing it? It doesn’t really sound like a fun thing to do” Katie looked at me with a questioning face. “Brian always knows how to get you to do things, You probably know that” I smiled. Her face went all dreamy and she bit her lip. I really didn’t want to know what she was thinking about right now! “Katie? Katie!” I flicked my fingers. “Yes? Please go on with the story” Katie blushed heavily and snapped out of it. “That’s how it went on from that first time. Brian set me up for a few dates since I was a little shy to step up to guys myself. So I got my dates from him and I did my break ups myself and for him it was the other way around. I recognise the look in your eyes, Katie. I know it’s a little weird how we did that, but it kinda worked. And you know? I had a lot of fun doing “my job” with a lot of girls... Man, I remembered his “too tanned-too stupid”- period. Those girls were all bitches and too stupid to put one foot in front of the other! I might even gone in a bit early in some cases” I said with a big smile on my face.

Katie looked at me and sighed “I feel a little sorry for you Ismay, you get this bad name, for something that isn’t really your fault, you’re actually really nice”. I looked at her surprised. I wasn’t used to people saying nice things to me out of the blue. “Don’t you worry about me, he is my best friend and I would do a lot for him, but I told him I won’t do his break ups anymore. His taste in girls has improved considerably, I think he will manage himself. So, I won’t break your heart, Katie.” I just hoped I could keep my promise. If my plan worked, Brian would step over his arguments and just keep Katie. At least until I was gone for college and then I couldn’t break up with her anyway. I was just praying Brian would change his mind and wouldn’t come to me after the month I gave him as an ultimatum. Katie pulled my arm all of a sudden “Ismay, let’s go! It’s four already, we need you all pretty at 7!” I really, really, really hoped Brian would change his mind... I like her, as said, we could be friends. “Want to get ready at my house? I could do your hair and makeup?”. “On one condition... please call me Izzie, my grannies name was Ismay, I feel so old when you call me that!” Katie grabbed my hand and pulled me out to my car “Okay! Let’s go Izzie, let’s give Chris another good reason to stay with you for another six months!”

By the time an hour had passed, I was praying to every God above that Brian would change his mind about Katie. She was totally pampering me. I didn’t know it could be this much fun having girl friends. Ok, Brian painted my toe nails sometimes, probably because he wanted to use my black nail polish too, but this was different. We had so much to talk about. We talked about Brian and Chris of course. She asked me how Chris and I met. Of course Brian arranged the first date, so the subject was changed to Brian really quick again. She had fallen for him... hard.

“Have you two always been this close?” she asked. “Yeah we have been since that Iris thing. As young as we were, we always put up a fight if our parents wanted to go away for a few days and were planning not to take the other with them. Fortunately our moms are really close friends so we had a lot of trips together.” I smiled at the thought and then felt a heavy heart all of a sudden. “We got even closer when my parents got divorced. My mom was a mess. I stayed over at Brian’s house a lot. That was my safe haven, away from all the drama. As you might know his parents separated not long after that. It was pretty messed up for a long time. It made our friendship really strong, we needed each other. We were the only ones we could rely on. Us against the world. It’s still like that I guess.” Katie smiled at me “must be nice to know there is always someone in your corner. Now, sit still and let me finish my masterpiece!”

After another 20 minutes, Katie put me in front of the mirror. I looked at myself. Was that really me?! I looked so different. She did a really good job. It was so not me, but then again, it was. I did look hot! “Wow, thank you so much Katie, you are amazing at this.” “I applied to beauty school, I really want to be a makeup artist. I still haven’t been accepted though” “Shouldn’t you make pictures of me then? To put in your portfolio? They would be crazy if they won’t let you in! You are good!” Katie had a big grin on her face as she got her camera and took some pictures of me. “Now you have to go, you have to drive home and Sean will be at you place in an hour. Have fun tonight, let me know how it was”. I hugged her, thanked her again and got in my car. “I’ll call you tomorrow!” This will be the best night ever!
