Alpha and Omega

Brian didn’t get as much sleep as he wanted, probably because he was too busy thinking about Matt. He woke up that morning and tiredly went to the fridge. He did a total guy thing and skimmed through the leftovers, seeing if any were still edible. He came through a KFC box he knew had chicken that was only a couple days old. He put it in the microwave to warm up the chicken before taking the box in the living room. Brian chewed on some chicken while watching tv. “Pinkly!” Brian called out, “Want some chicken?” He heard Pinkly’s fast tiny footsteps across the house as she made her way to Brian. He pulled a piece of white meat and held it out to the little Maltese. Pinkly sniffed it a couple times before grabbing the piece with her teeth. Brian smiled as he remembers Matt always telling him that he spoils the dog too much. But Brian couldn’t help himself, Pinkly was his friend, his baby girl, his four-legged kid.
Pinkly licked her lips after eating the piece of chicken. Brian handed her another piece of white meat to eat. Brian finished a chicken leg before going for another piece. Soon Brian’s cell phone rang. Brian licked his fingers before answering it. “Hel-” Brian said before remembering he had a mouth full of chicken. He swallowed and cleared his throat, “Hello?” “Eating lunch are we?” Matt finally said after laughing at Brian. Brian cocked an eyebrow before looking at his phone. It was 11:45 a.m. California time. “More like brunch,” Brian admitted. “Brunch?” Matt asked, “Did you just get up?” “Yeah,” Brian answered, “Having some chicken.” “Sharing with Pinkly, aren’t you?” Matt asked. Brian was silent as he was already giving Pinkly another piece. “Nooo,” Brian said, his voice dipping. Matt laughed. “So did you see your dad?” Brian asked, “Is he doing okay?” “Yeah I did and so far he’s doing fine,” said Matt. Brian smiled even though Matt couldn’t see it.
“I kinda miss the Cali weather though,” said Matt. “The high here is supposed to be in the mid 20s. Its way too fucken cold here.” Brian chuckled. “But I think I miss you the most,” said Matt. Brian blushed, “I miss you too Mattie.” “And I love you,” said Matt. Brian chuckled, “I love you too.” Brian could hear knocking on the other end. “Dammit,” said Matt, “That’s my mom. I gotta go, but I’ll call you later.” “Okay,” said Brian, “Love you. Bye.” “Love you too,” said Matt, “Bye.”
Brian set his phone back on the coffee table before he heard a knock on his front door. He opened it to see Michelle standing there with a golden retriever. “Michelle?” Brian asked, “What’s going on?” “Well I wanted to give Matt a surprise,” Michelle answered. “Matt’s in Minnesota,” Brian explained, “His dad was in a skiing accident.” “Oh I’m sorry to hear that,” said Michelle. “Why were you gonna give him a dog?” asked Brian. “It’s Bella,” Michelle replied, “She was with Val, but since Val is in prison, Bella didn’t have a home. I saw her at the humane society and talked to them to let Bella go back to Matt.” “Well she can come in,” said Brian, “Matt will probably still be surprised when he comes home. Thanks Michelle, that was awfully nice of you.” “It’s no problem,” said Michelle. Brian squat down and rubbed Bella’s ears, “Wait til Mattie sees you, he’ll be so happy.”
