Unexpected Friends

Chp. 8

Beep! Beep Beep!

I rolled over and turned my alarm clock off, groaning. I squinted at the clock. 7:40 . I reached up and turned on my bed side lamp and sat up, rubbing my eyes. I got up and changed into my school clothes and put on my glasses, then turned around and fixed my bed. I pocketed my cell phone, turned off the lamp, then headed downstairs. My parents had already left for work, so I was alone in the house. I quickly ate some cereal, then went back upstairs to my bathroom. I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and put on my contacts. I brushed my hair and patted a few strands on the top down. I fixed my side bangs, and looked at myself in the mirror. Satisfied, I headed back to my room, and grabbed my gym shirt and shorts, my clarinet, then headed downstairs. I folded my clothes, and put them in my backpack. I glanced at my phone, checking the time. It was 8:08. Not wanting to be late, I put on my black pair of Vans slip-ons, swung my backpack over my shoulder, picked up my instrument and opened the front door. I stepped out, closing the door behind me and locking it.

I headed down my driveway and turned to the direction of the Baker's house. As I walked, I could see kids waiting at the bus stop at the corner of the street. I spotted Tyler Lund among them, talking to his friends from the other neighborhood. As I approached the bus stop, Tyler noticed me and his friends followed his gaze, spotting me. Tyler pointed at me and whispered something to the boy next to him, making him laugh. I raised an eyebrow and walked past the group of boys.

"Well if it isn't the new kid." Tyler said, snatching my Clarinet case from my hand. I stopped and turned to him.

"Well good morning to you too, Tyler." I said sarcastically, turning to him "Would you mind giving me my Clarinet back?"

"Aw, the freshman plays Clarinet!" Tyler responded, turning to his snickering friends. "How cute!"

I sighed and looked at my phone, checking the time. If these idiots held me up any longer, I'd be late.

"Look Lund," I said, an annoyed look on my face. "I got places to be and the last thing I need is for you and your boyfriends to waste my time. I'm going to say this one more time. Give me back my instrument."

Tyler turned back to me, an eyebrow raised.

"Oooh, we got a feisty one over here!" He remarked, looking at his friends. He raised his arm, holding my instrument above his head. "You want it, Jacobson? You're gonna have to jump for it."

I looked up at his arm. Tyler towered above me and there was no way I was going to humiliate myself by jumping for my instrument. I looked down the street and saw that their bus was almost at the stop. I turned back to Tyler, who was smirking and still holding my Clarinet above his head.

I suddenly kicked my right leg up, catching Tyler in the fork of his legs. He yelped, letting go of my Clarinet and dropping to the ground. I lunged forward and grabbed my instrument before it hit the ground. I ran past the group, stopping after about 20 feet. I looked back to Tyler, who was still on the ground, hands over his groin. He turned his head to me, a glare on his face.

"You don't know what you've done, Jacobson." He hissed, blinking back tears. "You better watch your back."

I looked to his friends, who were now looking at me menacingly. I turned and ran, not stopping till I reached Zacky's house. I arrived just as the garage door was opening. Zacky, Matty, and Johnny walked through the opening, conversing. They noticed me and waved. I grinned back and walked to the car.

"Mornin J," Zacky greeted, unlocking the car. "I was worried you would be late."

"Sorry Zack," I said, as we all climbed in, Johnny and I in the back, Zacky and Matty in the front. "There was a...slight distraction by the name of Tyler Lund."

The three boys chuckled and Zacky started the car, pulling out of his driveway.

"What happened?" Johnny asked, turning to me.

"He was being a jerk and took my Clarinet." I explained as we drove past houses. "He wouldn't give it back, so I kicked him in the balls, caught my instrument, and ran."

Zacky, Matty, and Johnny all laughed loudly.

"Dang J!" Matty said, turning around to face me. "Did you seriously kick him in the nuts?"

I grinned and nodded. "I sure did."

Matty laughed and high fived me.

"Tyler Lund is a pretty big guy too." Zacky said, looking at me through the rear view mirror. "You must be a pretty bad ass little kid if you took him down."

I laughed. "He wasn't too happy about that. He seemed pretty mad and told me to watch my back."

"Well that doesn't sound very nice." Johnny remarked. "Do you think he'll do something?"

I shrugged. "I don't know. But I can take him if he tries anything stupid. Besides, he's a sophomore. He won't be in any of my classes."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The school day flew by quickly. I was assigned my band and gym locker and received homework in a few of my classes. The end of the day arrived quickly and I walked with Johnny and Matty to our eight period classes. Matty and I said good-bye to Johnny and walked into our English class, taking our seats. The bell rang and Mr. S took roll, looking at the seating chart. I was talking to Matty when I heard the door open. Curious, I turned to look at who was entering the classroom.
In came none other than Tyler Lund. He walked to up to Mr. S, handed him a note and began to talk with him. The classroom was loud with the voices of my classmates so I couldn't hear what they were saying.
Mr. S raised his hands. "Alright class, settle down. We have a new student in this class." He gestured at Tyler. "His name is Tyler Lund."
A few people muttered hellos. I just sat there in shock. What was Tyler doing in a freshman English class? Matty tapped me on the shoulder.
"Dude, why is he here? He's a sophomore!"
I shrugged and turned back to the front.
Mr. S scanned the room, then turned to Tyler. "Tyler, I'm afraid there's only one seat available." My eyes widened as he pointed to the empty desk right in front of me. "If you could please take your seat so we could begin class."
Tyler's eyes landed on me and he walked toward the empty seat and stopped, looking down at me. I gulped and looked up at him. His eyes narrowed and a dangerous grin was on his face.
"Hello Jacobson."
