Prolouge--Summer 1989- Just Boys
"Hey, Jacoby! Guess what?" I yelled, looking over at my best friend Jacoby Shaddix, who was shooting hoops in my driveway a few yards away.
He put the ball down, coming over to where I sat in the grass. Jacoby smelled bad, his T-Shirt and face drenched with sweat. "What? Wait... Don't tell me- You asked Val out?" He said, a small smirk turning up the ends of his lips. He wiped his forehead, pushing some of the jet black strands of his hair out of his eyes. Valary DiBennitto was our long time best friend, who I and half the boys in school had a crush on.
I laughed. "Yeah dude, how'd you guess?" I grinned. Jacoby chuckled and shrugged.
"You had a smile going on from ear to ear and you almost glowed. It was pretty easy to tell." He said, taking a sip from his water bottle. "Oh, hey. look who it is!" Jacob pointed across the yard, where 5 guys were racing towards us.
I waved. "Hey Zacky, Brian, Johnny, Jimmy, and Tobin! How ya been?" I greeted, me and Jacoby standing up to walk over to them.
Jimmy jumped onto Jacoby's back, screaming, "Piggy back rides for all!", causing the other guys to dog-pile on Jacoby, making him fall to the ground with an 'Oomph' before pushing them off of him and running away. He came and cowered behind me, which made me laugh because I know I'm a big guy, but so was he.
The rest of the day was full of fun and games. That was back when nothing could tear us apart. When we were all just guys with a love for each others company. Now it's all different, complicated, hostile. What went wrong?
