Chapter 4

I woke up in the bed of my hotel room feeling slightly refreshed despite the fact that I drank too much last night. This was probably because I was in a great environment. I opened up my window to let the beach breeze flow into the room. I could smell the ocean and the smog, to some this is a disgusting smell, but to me, it was the best smell in the world. It was time to get ready for my day.The bathroom had a small shower in there, so I went to turn it on. I stripped out of my clothes and got in. Normally, I spend almost a hour in the shower but today I was on a mission. After I washed up I got out and dried up then wrapped my hair in the towel while I began to do my make up. I threw on some eyeliner, mascara, and filled in my eye brows. Then I pulled out something cute, yet business formal to throw on so I can go drop off resumes.

I wasn't sure exactly what kind of job I wanted. Right now I'd take anything though, just to at least get on my feet and somewhere to stay. So I started with fast food. I hit up almost every single fast food place I could find. Few were hiring but a lot were just "excepting applications." Everyone knows they throw out those applications in a heartbeat. I took a break around noon-ish so I could grab something to eat while I did all of this running around. I stopped at a Panda Express and got myself a bowl of orange chicken with chow mein. Ahh, how I love Asian food. I chowed down on my food as my phone started to vibrate. I checked t see who it was. Of course it was my mother.

Did you make it there safe? Call me please.

I'm fine and I'm here mom, I'll call you later. I'm busy.

It wasn't a lie either. I was busy. Eating that is. I just need some space though. I just left home, it'd be nice to get the space I desired. It was stressful but I know she means well by it. I continued eating my food and doing it semi slowly to kill some time before I went out there and job searched again. Hopefully one of these places call me back or something soon. Like I said, I'd take just about anything right now. I finished up my last few bites of chow mein and then headed outside to light up a cigarette. I know smoking right now is a bad idea because I'd smell like smoke but thankfully I brought a good perfume to cover the smell up. I stared at all the people walking down the street. It seemed like they all stared at me as if I was some sort of freak. In a sense, I guess I've always been looked at that way out here. Feels good to be back. One last drag of my stogie and off to apply at more places.

Next places to apply to on my list were coffee shops and then bars. Coffee shops are always looking for baristas and sometimes they have live music, not specifically my taste in music but live music normally draws in crowds of people. Bars, well, the tips would me out a lot. I was walking down Main St. searching for the two kinds of places. There were a few Starbucks hiring, one of them even had the manager there so I turned on the flirt charm hoping it would work. He smiled at me and told me they will get back to me as soon as they review my resume and application. I had high hopes for that one but it wasn't an "you have the job" guarantee so I still needed to continue. I stopped at a couple bars but they weren't looking for hep and all the women who worked there were older anyways. It was starting to get later and I had been walking around town basically all day. So I stopped for a moment and pulled out another cigarette before I headed back to the hotel. I stood there against a building and smoked my cigarette taking in the fresh smell of Huntington Night Life. Then thats when I saw it. Johnny's Bar. It had a huge "Help Wanted" sign in the window. So I put out my cigarette and went across into the bar. I let down my hair and went straight up to the bartender.

"Hey, the sign outside says you're looking for help?" I asked.

"Yeah, we are actually. We need a bartender. Do you have any experience?" The bartender asked.

"I have some, but I'm more than willing to learn. And I'm a quick learner." I smiled.

"I see, and what is your name miss?"

"My name is Darla." I smiled.

"Alright Darla, come in tomorrow around noon. We'll start you off by doing some waitressing and I'll teach you what to do as far as the bartending goes." He said with a smile. "Don't be late." He added.

Did that really just happen? I just got a job. That sign was like a little sign from heaven or something. Looks like my luck is just getting better and better. I smiled proudly and walked out of the bar accidentally bumping into some guy who was coming in.

"I'm so sorry." I said to the guy.

"Darla?" The guy asked.

I looked up at him and recognized who it was right away.

"Brian!" I smiled.

"How was the rest of your trip?" He asked as we walked out to the parking lot of the bar.

"It was good, the drive was great and last night I spent some time on the beach." I replied with a smile.

"Thats good. I just got back in today and I'm meeting some of my friends here tonight. Wanna join?" He asked.

"I'd love to, but I've been job hunting all day and I am extremely tired." I frowned slightly. I really was tired though.

"Awh man, well maybe next time?" He said.

"Definitely. Just give me a call, or a text." I giggled. Wait, what the actual fuck? Since when did I giggle? Oh well, he didn't say anything or look at me weird so I'll let it go.

"I will. Goodnight Darla." He smiled.

"Goodnight." I said as I began walking away.

I headed off starting to walk down Main St. to look for my motel but as soon as I got to the light I heard footsteps running up behind me.

"Darla, wait!" I heard Brian yell for me as I turned around.

"What's the matter?" I asked a bit confused. Did he forget to say something? Or did he notice my stupid giggle and wanted to come make fun of me for it?

"Do you need a ride?" He asked half out of breath.

"Oh, no I'm fine. It's a nice night and I'm just up the street. Thank you though." I smiled.

"You sure?"

"Yes, I'll be fine. I'll talk to you later Brian." I smiled and the walked away. I"m not trying to push my luck here, so it was best to end the night on a good note without the extras. Besides it really was a nice night out.
