Sometimes Our Saints Are Sinners (TVH sequel)

Chapter Six

“Oh my Lord I can’t believe you guys fell for it again!” I roared as I keeled over from the intensity of my laughter. I could feel five pairs of eyes on me, but I couldn’t meet their unamused gazes. “I mean come on! I did the same thing to you guys like four hours ago!
“Okay, this time it was different.” Zach argued, which in turn only made me sink to the floor with tears in my eyes. “Sam came with a boy that was spitting image of him and hands him to you saying he wanted his mom and wouldn’t stop crying. And then the second you take the kid he stops crying.”
“Have…” I couldn’t even form a complete sentence and instead I just took deep breaths until I had calmed myself down enough to look up at my friends. “Haven’t you ever thought that I’m just that good with kids?”
“Well…” Zach frowned and his cheeks flushed a little. He averted my gaze and looked around before he finally sighed. “I guess we’re just stupid.”
“I mean I know that Aiden looks just like Sam, but I told you guys before that I would have said something if I had a child.” I rationalized as I pulled myself from the floor. “Especially if I had a kid with Sam.”
“I thought you said you had only made merry with Sam in high school.” Brian stated in confusion. I nodded but smirked a bit.
“That is true. But I have also, er, made merry with someone else within the past year and I could have ran away before the baby popped out.” My eyes flickered to Matt before moving to Brian without thinking about it. Matt shifted uncomfortably as everyone else’s gaze moved to him before making faces of discomfort. “Anyway, the point here is that you all are idiots.”
“Well that’s not nice.” Jimmy huffed. I heard a yell from the back of the shop and turned my attention to it. Sam was standing next to the wall, waving happily at me. I returned the wave before he jogged towards his car, departing at the same time as most of the people who helped out today. Sam honked one more time and I waved again before he sped down the dirt road and onto the street towards a friend’s house where he had been staying for the last five months.
“So, uh, Kid…” Johnny began, raising his eyebrow as I met his stare. “You have been leaving us in the dark a bit.”
“About wh-oh.” I gnawed on my lip and smiled a bit, feeling like I was being picked apart by every single member of the group in front of me. “That.”
“Yeah. That.” Zach raised his eyebrows and I laughed awkwardly.
“Well why don’t we make a fort in my apartment and watch movies and I’ll fill you in on the five months I’ve been gone?” I suggested, trying to lighten the mood with Jimmy’s two favorite things; forts and movies. As I had thought, Jimmy busted out into a grin and jumped on Matt’s back, wrapping his thin legs around Matt’s torso.
“What are we waiting for? To Kid’s apartment!” Jimmy yelled. Matt chuckled and grabbed onto Jimmy’s legs and began walking, all of us following after him.
“So you all need to go grab your blankets and pillows and then grab anything you think will keep our blankets up.” I instructed. The men agreed as we sauntered up the steps to my apartment, which was dark and silent from hours of being unused. When we entered the line of men left the room towards their sleeping quarters while I went to my bedroom and pulled out all of the pillows and blankets that were left in the room from my mom. I carried them out and put them on the loveseat before assessing how I would set it up. I heard heavy footsteps running along the catwalk and I didn’t even need to look back to know they were the steps of an excited Jimmy. “Jimmy, come here and help me plan.”
“Yes ma’am.” Jimmy chirped, trotting over to stand beside me.
“So I was thinking maybe we could take some pushpins and stick the corners on the walls but—”
“But it wouldn’t work on this side since there’s no wall to hold it.”
“Perhaps we could tie it to something.”
“What to, though? Everything that you can tie it to is too short and wouldn’t make a stable holder.”
“Maybe you can stand on the couches and tie something to the light fixtures up there.”
“What would we use to hold the blankets, though?”
“Hooks. Or maybe we could use bungee cords. I mean a lot of these light blankets have holes in them already so we could pushpins some ends and then hang the other ends.”
“Perhaps that would work.”
“And here we see the wild Jimmy and Kid in their natural habitat.” A voice cooed quietly behind us. I glanced back and saw that the other four had been watching us in amusement as we talked about our plans. “Right now they’re trying to plan a nest for them and their herd. They’re really into it.”
“Brian, can you shut up and go get bungee cords?” Jimmy commanded. Brian scrunched his face up and gave his tall friend an incredulous look.
“How in the hell would I know where the bungee cords are?” Brian spat as he crossed his arms over his chest. I rolled my eyes.
“Remember the closet where I got Matty-bear’s wakeup call?” Brian nodded and I mimicked him. “It’s in that closet. It’s a big clear box, bring the whole thing.” Brian left the apartment and Johnny began picking up blankets when Jimmy screamed.
“Do not touch the nest material!” Jimmy ordered loudly. Zach, Matt and Johnny all stepped back with their hands up in defeat. “Zach and Matt, go get drinks. Soda and beer preferably. Johnny, round up snacks. Kiddy and I will be making the nest.” The other three dispersed and Jimmy turned to me. “So should we put the bedding down first and build around or should we build and then cushion?”
“I think we should put down the initial bedding like comforters and sleeping bags since those are too heavy to use and pillows are useless so after the nest foundation is down we can build our fort and grab our blankets once the roof is over.”
“You are brilliant, my love.” Jimmy complimented as he kissed my forehead. I grinned and jumped up to peck his cheek before we grabbed the seven comforters and sleeping bags and put them down so the ground was even. After that we made a circle of pillows, and just as we finished Brian returned with our box of bungees. “Perfect. Now go find something to do while we build this.”
“Go pick out some movies from my selection in my bedroom.” I suggested. Brian grumbled something I couldn’t understand before plopping the box of bungees onto the loveseat. Jimmy grabbed a few and I handed him the first blanket it, which was thin and black and riddled with holes along the ends. The towering man fearlessly picked up some bungees and climbed onto the very edge of the couch, which was right next to the wall and was barely wide enough to hold his feet. Jimmy just barely got the first bungee attached to the light fixture, and I watched with my arms held out towards him as he hooked two together and gently set the blanket on the bungee. It held strong and he bounced off, picking up a pushpin from the side table and tacking one end while I tacked the other. We rested two blankets over the open space over the couch and then moved to the trickier side, where there was no couch for him to stand on.
“Well shit, how are we going to do this?” Jimmy pondered. I stared thoughtfully at the sight before a wicked grin crossed my face.
“Jimmy, have you ever wanted to be a cheerleader?” His eyes widened and I cupped my hands over my mouth. “Matt, Zach and Brian we need you here stat!” Brian sauntered out of my room and a minute later Matt and Zach emerged with their arms full of drinks. I waited until Matt and Zach emptied their arms before I cleared my throat. “You guys are going to be cheerleaders for a second.” I heard groans but immediately shushed them. “Hey, hey! Do you want a good fort or not?” Grumbles erupted but I ignored them as I put Brian and Zach on either side of Jimmy. “You guys are going to pick Jimmy up and you have to keep him steady while he hooks the bungees. Matt and I guess Johnny and I will all be spotting, Matt in back and Johnny and me in front. Okay?”
“I don’t like this idea.” Brian admitted uneasily as Jimmy placed his foot into his cupped hands. He stepped into Zacky’s next and stood up, balancing himself in their grips before stretching the bungees.
“Just a little bit higher.” Jimmy mumbled as he looked up at the light. Matt instinctively put one hand on Jimmy’s leg and one on his lower back, steadying the leaf-like man. Jimmy smirked and glanced down behind him. “Take me out on a date first before you touch me like that, Sanders.” Laughs were shared between the group on the ground before we all watched anxiously as Jimmy wrapped a bungee around the light fixtures. Breaths of relief filled the room as Brian and Zach lowered him to the ground.
“Now we’re able to finish this nest.” I clapped happily. Jimmy grinned and helped me finish up tacking the blankets up around the room. After a few touches the tent was up and all of us crawled under the teepee. Each of us picked a place to sit, and I ended up between Matt and Zach. I turned on the TV and flipped it to Fox, which had Shrek on, before leaning against my couch. “So lay it on me. Ask questions.”
“Why the fuck is Sam back?” Brian spat bluntly. With that came a flow of Sam questions, which made me quickly realize my mistake as I cut the five loud voices off.
“Okay, never mind. Just let me start from the beginning.” Five pairs of eyes watched me intensely as I took a deep breath. “When I got into South Dakota my mom picked me up and brought me to the farm, telling me that she hadn’t been staying there for a while but she’d stay with me that night to welcome me. After a week Mom left me to do my own stuff like find a job and get my shit in a pile and all that stuff. A… about a month before I left for here, I had called Sam out of habit. We caught up a bit but I was on a tight schedule so we made plans to talk to each other again sometime soon after that. Well I was free and so I rang him and told him I was in Brandon, and he jumped at the idea to come visit of me. My sister Elsa was on her winter break from college and she always liked Sam so she brought him up with her. The first night Sam was here I opened up and told him about all that had happened in Huntington and he stayed with me to keep my company. After a few weeks Sam moved in with our friend Kaleigh since he didn’t want to go back to Nebraska. For my birthday,” I paused to slide my hand onto Matt’s hand, which was near mine out of convenience. I rubbed the top of his hand softly and sighed a bit. “I took my sister to New York for my birthday since I had two tickets.” I could feel Matt’s hand tense under my touch and I couldn’t meet his eyes. I didn’t know if he told his friends about the tickets he had bought me as a Christmas gift, but either way the teepee was now full of thick air. “I didn’t want to bring Sam because that would have seemed a bit too much. But from then on I’ve been working at the golf course with Sam and we’ve been rebuilding our friendship. He’s kind of adopted me as his little sister recently, despite our past together. That’s why he was a bit tense around Matt, since he gets overly-protective and you guys got defensive once you found out he was the Sam.”
“Wow… That’s…” I smiled shyly at the loss of words each man had for my story, but I sighed a bit in relief when Matt’s hand loosened under my hand and flipped upward so he could hold my fingers. I squeezed his palm and he returned it, which made my heart flutter a bit.
“I… I’m just glad that you had someone for you.” Matt said finally, which allowed me to meet his gaze. He shot me a small smile and cleared his throat. “I mean, although it’s your ex-boyfriend, it’s good to know you had someone to take care of you while we weren’t here.”
“Yeah. I think I’ll have to thank him for taking care of you.” Zach added, pulling me into a half hug. I let out a deep breath of respite and grinned a little.
“Well now that you guys have somewhat accepted Sam, sometime soon we’ll have to have you guys re-meet again. He was really excited to meet Zach and Brian since he plays guitar and you guys are, like, his idols.”
“D’aww,” Zach cooed, blushing a bit. Brian was smirking and blushing as well, looking bashful that my ex-boyfriend loved him.
“Seems like you have a thing for band members.” Johnny snickered from the other side of Matt. I laughed and nodded.
“What can I say? Band members are super attractive.” All of the men giggled a little bit and they pulled in for a group hug. “Now let’s watch some movies and if you have any more questions just ask me.” They all nodded and snuggled closer to me as Shrek 2 had begun on the screen.
For the first time in a long time we just sat around drinking beer and eating chips like the fatasses we were, and that filled my heart with happiness. In the early hours of the morning we finally ceased our restlessness and went to bed, Matt and Zach holding tightly onto me as we drifted off into slumber.
