Tied to Our Fate

Chapter 4

I didn’t even know what to think. This was all so sudden. Brian had told me he liked me and truth be told, I have always liked him. He was my friend but I had always felt differently about him. Had he shown signs of liking me? I wasn’t sure because I’ve never really paid attention to much of my surroundings, as bad as that sounds. I have no idea how I made it through college. But I guess maybe what I had told Brian before about the right time.
I’m 24 and I’m done with school and have a job. I have my own place; well I’ll have it back soon anyway. But a part of me really wanted to be with someone again and as hesitant as I have been in the past six months or so, I knew deep down I needed it and I was ready.

“Stace! I’m heading out!” Zack hollered.
I was sitting at my desk browsing Amazon; a bad habit I had picked up recently. I had already bought way too much crap.
“Ok!” I hollered back.
“You going to be ok here by yourself?”
“Yes, Zack!”
“Call if you need me!”
“Ok!”
I shut my laptop, determined not to buy anything else and stepped away heading downstairs. Zack’s car revved in the driveway and I saw him pull away as I stepped foot in the living room.
It was Sunday and I had no idea what to do with myself. Laney was off with her family in Vegas and everyone else was busy. I plopped myself on the couch deciding I should catch up on my shows when the there was a knock at the door.
“Errrgg.” I grumbled, slowly getting up.
Opening the door revealing who was on the other side made me wish that I had actually put pants on today than my pajama shorts.
There stood Brian.
“Oh, hi.” I greeted him nervously.
“Hey.” He smiled at me, taking off his sunglasses.
His eyes quickly ran down my legs I thought but I didn’t want to get too excited but I’ll admit, that instantly made me nervous.
“Hey.” I repeated, stupidly.
“Is Zack here?”
My heart sank a little. I was kind of hoping he was here to see me?
No, stupid! Why would he be here for you?! Oh, shut up! He told you he digged you right?! My inner voice fought.
“Uh, no. You just missed him.”
“Oh.” He nodded.
“Well, you can come in if you want.” I offered.
“Yeah, sure!” he answered, a little too quickly.
Was that nervousness I noticed on his face? I wanted to giggled like crazy at Brian being any sort of nervous, but I kept my mouth shut and stepped aside letting him in then closing and locking the door.
“Locking me in?” he questioned.
“Oh, sorry, habit.” I chuckled, nervously.
There was already a lot of nervousness going on here and it was raising my blood pressure a little.
“So what are you up to?” he asked, taking my prime TV viewing spot on the couch.
“Well first of all, you’re in my seat…” I began.
He raised an eyebrow and he was trying not to smile.
“And nothing, just catching up on TV.”
He laughed and scooted over and I took back my spot.
“What are you doing?”
“Nothing, just thought I’d run some new music by Zack but since he’s not home, I don’t know.” he shrugged.
We were quiet for a minute but I broke the silence, determined not to make this moment awkward.
“You can watch TV with me if you want. This is all I’m going probably be doing today.”
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“What you’re watching.” He laughed.
“I’m catching up on Sons of Anarchy.”
“You’re still watching that?”
“I just started watching it on Netflix.”
“Oh, well I’ve seen it all. You want me to tell you what happens?”
“NO!”
I was serious about my TV and if he’s ruined it for me I’d smack him…
He laughed again, a little more loudly.
“Awww, why not?”
“Because I like to be surprised when I’m watching TV.”
“What about surprises in general?”
“Hate them.”
“That doesn’t even make sense.”
“Why not?”
“How can you like surprises in a TV show but not in real life?”
“I don’t know, it just takes all the fun out of watching them if I already know what’s going to happen.”
He shook his head and laughed some more. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him laugh this much in my life.
“It’s nice to hear you laugh for a change.” I mentioned.
He looked away before saying,
“It’s nice to have a reason to.”
I felt my cheeks get hot.
Oh calm down! How do you know he’s even referring to you?! I thought.
He picked up the remote off the table and starting flipped channels.
“And yes, I meant you…” he added quietly.
My cheeks were for sure on fire now!

I had finished the end of season three of Sons of Anarchy finally and decided to was time to go outside and smoke.
“Smoke?” I asked Brian, holding up my pack of cigarettes.
“Yeah, I could use one.”
We walked through the kitchen to the back patio and took a seat at the table.
“Do you want to do something tonight?” he asked.
I lit my cigarette, taking a long drag off of it before answering.
“What did you have in mind?”
My head was going a hundred miles a minute wondering what he was going to say.
“Maybe to Johnny’s bar. A few of our friends are going to be there tonight I think if you just wanted to go hang out and get a drink.”
“Yeah, sure. That sounds good.”
He smiled and finished his cigarette and put it out.
“How about around 6?”
He stood up so I put my cigarette out and stood up too.
“Six is good.” I smiled.
I opened the sliding door to the kitchen and the cool air from the house breezed past me.
“Well, I’m gonna go. I’ll pick you up ok?”
“Ok.” I smiled and followed him to the door.
He opened it and stopped when he took a step outside. I waited to see what he’d do and I was shocked when he smiled and came very close to me, placing a kiss on my cheek. I closed my eyes almost trying to savor the moment and the feeling of him close to me.
He pulled away too quickly for my liking and smiled at me, but still very close to me.
“I’ll see you soon.” He smirked.
“K.” I smiled.
And he was off. I closed the door behind me and grabbed my phone off the coffee table. It was 4:49.
“Shiittt!!!” I hissed, taking off for my room.
I needed to get ready and I really wanted to look nice tonight. I had never his excited about a date before. Well, I don’t know if this was really considered a date but I felt like I was sixteen again and going on my first date. Hopefully Zack wouldn’t be here questioning Brian about if he had any plans for his future, who his parents were, how old he really was and if he had a job.
I chuckled at that thought and hopped in the shower.
